What are some items that you bought for cheap but has turned out more reliable than expected?

Mine is a cheap chinese tent (pic related) that I bought in 2009 and has been with me through most of southern africa for 13 years.

Mora companion HD,

naturehike cloud 2 tent which cost me 97€.

Also some of the decathlon gear, like their mh100 tent (25€), which has thickest poliester walls Ive ever seen. Snugpak jungle blanket which is surprisingly warm.

But the real winner?

Bic mini.

Anyone tried a Hyke and Byke brand sleeping bag?
They are a US company that makes chinks put together gear for them. The Eolus 15 degree bag is 88 fill goose down on top and synthetic on the bottom. Its a 15D nylon shell and 2.5lbs for under 200.
Seems like the only downside is the temp rating is at survivable, so its really a 30 deg bag. And it's heavier than a name brand who would have better tooling for cutting weight.
I'm thinking of getting it as my 3 season bag.

I emailed the company and they stated that they do not use feathers from live plucked geese.
I'm sure the Chinese companies and random store brands might. But it seems like small companies have more control over material sources.

It depends, some of the stuff Varusteleka produces is utter garbage but some is really good. Back in their good old days they had a lot of cheap milsurp but nowadays they seem to bring more and more own production in to their store. Also they have changed from honest milsurp/military gear/outdoors store in to a fashion store for the city hipsters in the capitol region with their craft beers and such. Their knives are great, I love my skrama and apparently jääkäripuukkos of varusteleka are bomb proof as well.
You should read reviews of every product they sell. Savotta, Terävä (knives) and Särmä TST (military equipment) are generally good and worth buying. One great thing about Varusteleka is that they improve the gear that Finnish Defence Forces use and they could be considered as the largest supplier of the Finnish soldiers after the army itself.

I bought a hammock with a built in musquito net for $25 (incl suspension lines) and it lasted two summers. I slept in it at least 50 times and no problemo. Then one day it just ripped. It's still sleepable but I'm done with hammocks for now. I'm moving far up north this summer so I'm gonna need some better gear for the winter.

Basically same - Hillman tent off Ali Express, for my son to garden camp in. Was super cheap but remarkably sturdy. I fell on it and broke the zip so just threw it out. May get another, was fine in shit weather. Seam sealed etc

Cheap Denali 35L pack I bought on sale for $30 bucks. Had it for years, commuted up to 3 hours a day on a motorcycle wearing it at times in torrential rain and never leaked. Still going strong today.

Lies, it's now 27€ in my country. Probably more expensive on others.
But yeah, for the price (sub 30€) it's pretty decent, way above any supermarket level tent.

That's a general rule for most sleeping bags unless you use a liner. Most bags are only as good as the R-rating of the sleeping pad too.

I've had a Hyke and Byke 15 degree bag for a few years now. I don't know if I'd call $150 for a 15 degree off brand bag to be a real bargain, I've heard most of their stuff is a tier below Marmot and REI brand stuff but noticeably better than Alps or Kelty.
That said my bag from them seen a good bit of use and I've taken it on multiple week long trips over the years. I've had no problems with it and I've used it on a few nights where it got into the upper teens with a good pad and a liner.

I bought this pack off Amazon for $80 back in March of 2020. I thought it wasn’t going to last more than the summer cuz it just felt cheap and the strap felt like they were going to break pretty easily. I’ve been extremely happy with it. I’ve taken it on 8-9 multi day trips with zero problems. Did three 5 day trips with it loaded to 40+ lbs and it’s been great. Would buy again.

Better yet, figure out who in Estonia is selling repros (they don't have the goofy fucking buckle), and get them to make you an updated version with modern materials, a stetnum strap, and ditch the DPM camo for forest or OD green. The ability to unzip the rocket packs into a day pack is absolutely brilliant.

Avoiding preservatives and other additives. Hiking doesn't mean you have to only pack science foods full of chemicals, some people still want natural food even when hiking.

Eggs are graded by size/weight and sorted so that any given carton will have roughly the same size eggs, but you can choose from multiple sizes (medium, large, jumbo). All the eggs from the big egg producers tend to be white, but the eggs from smaller producers tend to be brown. If you buy eggs from a local farm you'll usually get eggs of unsorted size and a variety of colors.
