Want to do try bowhunting for the first time this year, probably turkey and maybe whitetail. Should I learn archery on a compound bow or a recurve/longbow? I've heard that recurve is good for establishing good form, but is it worth the extra cost if I'm planning to get a compound for hunting anyways? Is it really that difficult to learn good archery technique on a compound bow?

etc, etc. I feel like I'm losing my mind. I have two brands of soft tips (20 rounds each) and a good few mags of FMJ (around 100-150 rounds, 62gr, 3,100fps). I have lots of .22lr. I just don't want to lose my first fox; the snow would've at least let me follow paw prints and a blood trail, but we lost that in the last couple of days. I also don't want to vaporize its chest or side and have to find some fur scraps to hide my fuckup. I don't have very many days left to get a fox, so I'm trying to get my shit together and quick. Does someone here have some experience with fox hunting? Should I just go (supposedly) "overkill" (.223) for my first and go from there?

Whoever told you it's easier to learn traditional and that compound leads to bad form is a retard. The form is different for both and compound is much easier to do correctly and consistently than traditional. If you have a slight background in archery and have a tuned bow, you can get consistent dinner plates with a compound at 40 within a month.

Thanks, anon. I have Federal 62gr soft point that claims a speed of 3,000 FPS at the muzzle and some "cheap" Herters 55gr that claims a speed of 3,240 FPS (unspecified). Probably going to use the 62gr as IIRC my gun liked that weight more the last I remember. They're >$1/rd, though!

I'm probably keeping this fox as a nice case skin since it's my first, but eventually I do want to try full body mounts on a foam form or tan them. That would probably be during next season or the one after that depending on whether I can get permission to hunt on some farms around here. I can do squirrel taxidermy; I'm not the best, but I'm at the point where all I need to figure out how to pose a pelt easier/better and I need to try some minor tweaks to the shape of the body/form to better keep the shape of the face, especially around the eyes which I assume I should be using clay on. I've always wanted to try something other than some squirrels and the occasional invasive species.

Definitely; that's what I was thinking. I re-zeroed my .22 today and practiced for the little squirrel season I have left assuming I would have time to hunt (I didn't) and maybe get lucky and run into the fox. Tomorrow, I'll go zero my .223, go out hunting with that, and hope to run into the fox again. I should probably play around and try to make a call just in case, but previous experience has shown I'm much more likely to run into him while walking than I am to get him to come in from a call. I'd move up to raccoons with .22lr before going to foxes instead, but I think I've only run into one or two by sheer luck in daylight over the past 3 years and the fox season is closing very very soon. That fox and I have run into each other two, maybe three times in the past two weeks and I really don't want to get to the end of this season without a fox to show for it! He's not too skittish that I can't get a shot off fast enough, but the real challenge is either getting him to stop or figuring out how to get in a good position for a shot, line it up, and carefully take a shot before he gets bored and wanders off into the brush. I know when he likes to come out, but the weather just isn't cooperating and giving me the right conditions I know he'll come out in. Super frustrating as I know when I can best track him and when he'll probably be out hunting/exploring...but I can't control those conditions and they don't happen every day.

Legal minimum in most states varies between 35 and 40#. If you're shooting compound, just start at what you can safely draw and shoot every day or every other day, then after a week or two, crank it up five pounds.

Anons, I need a suggestion for a inexpensive hunting rifle. Something that's not a .22 that could theoretically kill something like a deer or a wild hog. I'm a CaliFag so I would prefer anything that isnt an AR platform, however, AR platforms are still on the table. Preferably I'd be hoping for something under $400 USD, but I know that may be a bit of a stretch. Thanks bros.

Depends on what you mean. New or old? I have some "old" made in Japan ones and they're not bad (similar to >>2299218), but they're not $1000 binoculars. They're better than a lot of cheap junk I've used and even a low end 10-20 year old Barska binocular IMO, but IDK if Bushnell is still that good these days. I have to wonder, though, if much like modern rifle scopes, the cheap ones (even Barska) have gotten much clearer than even most of the mid range 80s scopes. I think cheap optics have improved insanely in the past 10 years, too, as I'm pretty happy with my $100 Barska scope (hey, don't laugh, it came with the gun). I'd say go to a hunting store and try them out. If you like them and think they're clear enough for you, just keep them clean and I don't think you'll ever have a complaint unless they started making the internals out of plastic instead of the metal they used in the 80s. I might be a little more careful with them than a more expensive pair; cheap optics aren't insanely strong.

Somebody with more experience will have to comment, but I'm also in CA and I've seen a lot of good deals on used .30-30 leverguns on consignment lately, and from how common they seem to be and what I've heard about CA hunting they seem like they might be a good fit for the conditions. One of my LGS had an older Marlin for $400 in really nice condition and I'm still kicking myself for not buying it.

Yeah I've been keeping a bit of an eye out but it's low priority. I am kinda bummed because one of my LGS had a late '60s Winchester 94 listed on their site for $200 the other day, bad finish on the receiver but it looked like it had rubbed off from extensive carry and not neglect or abuse, and I had a gut feeling it might actually be in good mechanical shape so I was gonna go check it out the next morning but it was already gone by then.

Thanks, anon. I haven't shot .223 in a while but when I sighted my gun in, it grouped pretty well. I just have to remember to aim a little low as the Federal shoots about 1.5" high at 50yds. A fox is a much bigger target than the tiny little squirrel lungs (and heads especially) I'm used to, however! I looked at some pictures showing where the lungs, heart, brain, etc. normally are and it seems the heart is behind the front leg at the bottom of the chest when standing. Not sure if I'm going to be able to hit that heart since it's probably about the size of the chest of a grey squirrel, but we'll see. I do have some shooting sticks, but I put them away yesterday as they were getting in the way they didn't with my other gun. They're also extremely flimsy and resting anything but a .22 really shows it, kek.

Right now I'm using a call made from 2 12ga low brass hulls (see link below) and I don't know if it got him interested or not. I tried making a call out of a rubber balloon, but it requires multiple hands, so I abandoned that pretty quick. I've been meaning to pull a squeaker out of a dog toy for use as a mouse distress call, but I completely forgot (they work well on foxes). Looks like you can get one you blow into for $10, so I might just have to pick one of those up soon as a dog toy with a squeaker isn't much cheaper! I do also have a multi-piece call, but it's a little too complex for me and I can't get much more out of it than a kazoo noise.

Yeah those Primos blow calls are pretty cheap and effective. If I was you I would try to get in a concealed position 30 minutes before first light then start railing on that call as soon as legal shooting light hits. You could even rig up some kind of jerk rig with a squirrel pelt and some fishing line to give the illusion of thrashing fur like 50 yards in front of you. Could you post a pic of the terrain you're hunting? Just curious what the vegetation and topography are like.

Let me see if I can find a picture. The setup is strange IMO but I think it's standard around here for public land. The property is large, but cut up into two basic types. One half is hilly wooded areas and the other half is clear cut grass paths and grass fields with wooded boundaries. Today I set up in a field in the edge, tossed an orange hat on the bush (so no one would walk into my line of fire if they waded through the brush like I did), and sat for 30-45 minutes. Didn't have much time and it was late (my fault), so tomorrow I'll try to get out early.

Any trappers here? I have two questions. First is it even worth it anymore? With fur prices the way they are I can't see me breaking even on equipment for several seasons before I even consider my time.

Secondly, coon bait ideas? I've been trapping coons out of the buildings at work, cage traps and 220s in buckets. I've been using cat food but I think I've gotten all the low hanging fruit because I know there are still coon in there but the traps are being left alone now no matter how I set them. I've tried moving the traps, I've tried disguising them, I even built a little tunnel out of haybales with a 220 in the throat so there was no bucket, they have no interest in the cat food anymore. Today I mixed up some molasses/vanilla/strawberry jello powder and coated the cat food in that so we will see how that goes, but I'm still looking for ideas for when that doesn't work.

I'm pretty sure you can "rent a gun", but it'd probably just be a borrowed gun from a guide/mentor as you're not just going to go to a store and rent one, kek. I mean, you can go shoot machineguns in Vegas (post 86 sample guns, not legal to own w/o loicense) so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use a guide's gun, just make sure whoever you choose knows you're going to need one since you don't live in the US before making any plans.

Also, find a pellet gun and get trigger time with that at home if at all possible. Not a Red Ryder BB gun, a pellet rifle. You'll learn a lot about trigger pull on it; I started on one out of necessity. Print out paper targets and put a stack of something behind it like a bunch of carpet or a box of sand/dirt, but put a piece of wood in the back just in case to prevent anything from punching all the way though. Also, use pellets as BBs tend to ricochet.

They might be freaked out by new stuff. Try putting your "props" so-to-speak out there like your buckets or tunnels and just leave them out there for a while, maybe a week or two, then put the trap in it. Mice do the same thing. Sometimes they won't go near a trap if they've been pressured enough, but if you leave the trap out, food or not, they'll eventually get comfortable enough with it that they'll fall for it again. Sometimes you need to give them a free meal after a while, sometimes not. I've never trapped but I don't doubt that some of it translates over from rodents to raccoons; both are rather smart animals.

And the drawing. Green is trees, brown is paths/other fields. I was sitting at the red dot facing to the right of this image, across the field. Orange is a hill, yellow is the regular height of the field, and green (upper left and lower right) is the low spots. Totally blind across the hill to my right (lower right in the image) until across the tree line, but I can see the path in the upper right (my left) It's about a 100yd field in length, maybe a little less. More than 50 for sure. I came through the path in the lower left of the field. That is all overgrown with high grass and brush, so it's noisy to get through. The fox, however, seems to go along this path, so I do it, too.

From the path, he continues straight up, then straight right along the edges of the field. There are paths worn into the grass. The top edge seems to have a straight path across it, but it's only worn into the woods enough to crawl through; it seems to be a path something made, but nothing close to the size of a deer. The fox probably didn't make it as he has no problem with using the field. He travels to the top right of the field and then exits using a path (barely visible, top right) and goes straight up where he hangs around some pine trees or takes a right after that and goes in the field and then the woods (bottom edge of image, not pictured, but extends from the edge of this image about 300-500 yards+) and paths neighboring it.

What previous anon said is really good advice, .270, .308, and 30-06 are all extremely common rounds and can be found and bought just about anywhere. You can take up to an elk reliably with 308 or 30-06, .270 requires good placement, and I wouldn't go for an elk with a .270 personally, but it's a nice flat round without a ton of kick, and awesome for deer. There are some pretty nice old marlins and model 70s out there cheap. Bolts are decent starter guns because the action is very strong, they're accurate, simple to maintain and generally on the cheaper side. You can find something under $400 with a scope, but don't expect some CoD sniper rifle, but an old wooden stock bolty.

The important part of a hunting rifle/shotgun is knowing what kind of game your purchasing for. Big game needs big rounds, and that generally means big kick, and expensive ammo. You also need to consider the expected ranges you are hunting in. Cali is a big place, and there is a lot of different landscapes between the mountains, the central valley, the delta, etc.

As per legality of hunting, yes you can legally hunt in the US as a tourist. It's generally lumped in the "non-resident" category for fees, though each US state has different management, you can't just by a USA hunting license, but say a Texas, California, Kentucky, etc. license from the local wildlife department. The important part is you fulfill the legal requirements, and have your license/tag whatever. Iirc you can substitute a passport number for social security number when buying your license, but it's probably easier to just go to a physical store and buy it there.

The harder part will be getting a firearm. Despite what media might tell you, you can't just walk into a local shop, plop down $300 and walk out with a rocket launcher. There are pretty stringent control of *legal* firearms by businesses and gun owners. The absolute simplest way is to either know a local who is willing to go hunting with you, and you can use their gun, or go on a guided hunt where a firearm is provided (licenses may still be required). Some species do not require licenses as they are considered pests, and are not managed by the government, most notably wild hogs. You do not need a license to hunt hogs, and you can do so at night, so long as you have the landowner's permission. You also don't necessarily need a license for game "farms" where exotic/raised animals are planted on the property. You see a lot of pheasant game farms across the country, and you see a lot of exotic animal farms in Texas.

You can "rent" guns at a gun range, but those firearms do not leave the range premises. I imagine a game farm will follow similar rules in that if they actually rent firearms to use, then they do not leave the premises, but that is a lot of paperwork and cost for the business, and our regulatory agencies look for any opportunity they can to shut firearm businesses down.

It is pretty nice for hiding, though I rarely do being a squirrel hunter. Just found some old cobbled together ground hides I might use for future hunting. Low stone walls, though? Never saw one outside of some old abandoned properties (around pre 1900).

Thought I would report back, the old timers were really on to something had a coon in every trap two days in a row. I live in an area with lots of brush and hills. Furthest clear shot I've ever taken is probably around 50 yards. If you're hunting mountain goats 3 valleys over you might need a better gun, but most practical use you'll be fine with a 30-30 so long as you can group your shots.

Reed calls are more difficult to operate, but you'll have more success with them since you can call while your hand is on your shotgun. Here's a simple youtube video from a champion tier turkey caller: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtYWctbXaj4

If you cbf watching a short video, the reed goes forward in your mouth and the plastic/canvas stuff goes back. Set the call comfortably in your mouth at an angle where the canvas stuff goes into the roof of your mouth and the reed toward your tongue. If you can't get it to sit comfortably, trim the canvas a tiny bit until you can. You don't need to touch your tongue to the reed at all. Start off with something simple: clucking like a chicken since turkeys also cluck. From there to a cut is really simple. Just extend out the action then drop your jaw. Practice a lot in the next 6 weeks before season starts. Driving to work, driving home, just fucking around in the house, etc.

As for actually getting a bird, starting in mid march, go out in the evening and do a little calling. If you have an owl call (sometimes labeled a locator, it's just an owl hoot noise. Turkeys fucking hate owls and gobble like a motherfucker at owls.), this is the perfect time to use it. Basically, you're just looking for where the turkeys roost. Do this up through the night before opening day. Then on the morning before opening day, go to where the turkeys are roosting and start calling once you're legally allowed (half hour before sunrise). It is illegal to shoot a turkey out of their roost, but once they hit the ground they're fair game. If you don't get a bird that day, just go back out in the evening and look for where they're roosting and try again the next day.

Turkey hunting is fun tho. Have fun anon.

Butchering deer is pretty easy. Gut it, hang it, and skin it. Then take the front shoulders and cut them off, deer don't have shoulder sockets so they're just held on by meat. Then take a sharp, flexible knife and run it along the spine to get your backstraps. On the inside of the ribcage are the tenderloins, use the same knife and pull those the same way but reverse (if that makes sense), if it's your first time you'll fuck it up but you'll get better. If it's a big buck all bloated and muscled up from the rut cut as much neck meat off for burger as you feel like, same with rib meat, if you want ribs take your bone saw and cut them off. (I don't eat the ribs myself and throw the ribcage to the dogs) After you're done with that cut the ribcage off at the base of the spine, then split the hind quarters with a saw. To process that meat just grab a quarter and a sharp knife and cut the silver skin off. If you have a grinder, have two buckets, one for burger and one for scrap. Ziploc freezer bags and a roll of wax paper will keep things well preserved if you make sure to squeeze all of the air out first. Label your shit so you know if you have Loins, Tender Loins, or big chunks for roast. For burger or ground meat mix in some pork fat or cut it with other ground meat around 50/50 (don't mix in 50% pork fat) or so otherwise it won't stick together in a burger or meatloaf or what have you.

That's basically how to use an entire animal unless you want to get into eating offal and eyeballs and shit.

I went /out/side today, scouting out my local area for potential places to hunt small game. The first place I went to was department of fish and wildlife land (which I am legally allowed to hunt on) but it was all fenced off.
Next I went to the next place I wanted to check out which is Bureau of Land Management land and over there appeared to be some kind of public range I never knew about. My buddy and I decided to check it out so I pulled my .22 plinker out and we shot soda cans and oranges for a couple hours it was a blast.
I noticed that every once in awhile the brass failed to fully exit the firearm when cycling the bolt, the casing was freed from the breech but still rattling around the feed area. Not a huge issue and easy to clear, but annoying nonetheless. Is this common for anyone else or do I just not know how to cycle my bolt?
The firearm in question is a CZ 457

How do I into hunting here? I went up to Humboldt county once and heard that the fowl hunting is pretty good. I think this would be a good starting point as I'm always down to make another trip up there.

Read and understand the pertinent regs, waterfowling has quite a learning curve, esp for brand new beginners, can you shoot skeet? can you call convincingly? do you have the money to invest in all the equipment(waders, decoys, calls etc.) do you have a way to retrieve the fowl after shooting?

upland game is a good way to get started, just need a shotgun and determination, it can be squirrels, or beating brush and flushing birds, or walking around looking for rabbits.
get onxhunt 20 bucks a year, and find some public land, blm and national forest allow hunting 90% of the time, carry some slugs in your pocket in case you see a pig or yote,(in most states you just need a hunting license no tags for pigs or yotes)
you don't need fancy equipment, time is your #1 factor in determining success, even if you are a complete moron, spend enough time outdoors and you'll get your opportunity, slow your roll and train your eyes to scan for movement eventually you'll start to pick up skills and success will come more and more.
Don't be afraid of failure or looking new, just do it and learn.

As the pastebin author, I don't recommend going archery on your first hunt unless you're an experienced archer. As stated in the pastebin, a guided hunt is a great way to pick up some of the early ropes but is very expensive. Your best source of information is your state brochure which should've dropped sometime in the previous few weeks. You can generally find them online, but some states are super faggy about it in which case your best bet is the sporting goods section of your local supermarket or your local sporting goods store (which is a great source of information regardless). Most hunters that didn't grow up hunting either started on guided hunts or just learned by trial and error. Hell, the overwhelming majority of hunters learned by trial and error. You are legally required to take a hunter's safety course unless you're in your 70s so be sure to do that.

As opposed to what? It's literally just catching frogs. You can use your hands or you can use a spear. Both work just fine, but frog gigging a lot of work for not a whole lot of meat. I like frog, but not enough to think frog gigging is worth the hassle.

After looking up the legal draw weights in Canada, it seems that generally across provinces the minimum for deer is 18kg/40#. Minimum for bear, elk and moose is 22kg/50#. So yeah, that's good enough for whitetail (and honestly it's pretty high as far as legal minimums go for deer). They also have a minimum draw length which is not something I've ever seen before so if you're a smaller manlet than me and your draw length is under 28" then you can't hunt with a bow.

As for gutting, depending on your local regulations you might need to leave proof of sex so leave the nuts or vag.

Turn the deer on its back and slit the stomach up to the breastbone, being careful to not cut the stomach open because it stinks, take your knife and put it under the breast bone and split it. Cut down to and around the asshole, leaving proof of sex on each leg if required, reach in behind the turds in the shit pipe and squeeze them out the asshole, then cut it off and rip it out, try to pull the bladder out whole too so you don't get piss everywhere but it doesn't really matter. Take your knife in your dominant hand and put two fingers along the blade so you don't accidentally stab yourself and reach both hands up into the chest cavity, cut the membranes that get in the way, cut off the throat and windpipe and put your knife down outside of the animal. Reach back in and pull. Once the pile gut pile is out turn the animal over and let it drain for a bit.

As for skinning, cut slits in the back knees leaving the tendons attached, hang it from those and start cutting the hide back until you can get a good grip and then just peel it off. I'm not joking, a warm deer can be peeled, cut as necessary but you should be able to peel most of it.

That's basically how my family has done it for as long as anyone can remember.

.22 is a widdle baby case - so if you're yanking the bolt back too hard, you're going to disengage the very small rim from the also smol extractor. After the initial 'throw' of the bolt upwards, just smoothly and with moderate force pull the bolt back. Can't have it run too far; the gamelands only go so far and some spots were near others properties, roads, and other places I saw the fox were just impossible for tracking unless I had some nice snow to follow the blood due to brush, hills, and trees. We don't all have nice rolling bare midwestern hills/mountains. The hills here give you zero visibility past 50/100 yards in one direction and maybe 300 in the other if you're lucky.

Prions are just major bad luck AFAIK. Few animals have them from what I know, but if it has them and you somehow get the prions starting to fuck with your body, you're done. Eat the brain and that's your highest risk, so don't do it, especially not deer (fuck CWD). Spinal cord is number 2 risk, so try not to cut the spine if possible and try to keep it off the meat you're eating. I think the lymph nodes are also up there in risk but I may be misremembering. Mad cow is basically the same shit AFAIK. As long as you stay away from those parts of the deer, the risk is greatly reduced. Scat can also (supposedly) spread it if what I was told wasn't BS, so don't make deer sausage with its guts.

If you're not in one of the risky states I would not worry about it. If you are in one of the risky states, use a disposable blade and gloves, do it on a tarp, bag it up and freeze it, then take the head to a testing facility. PA has them but I do not hunt deer (guess why, it's a pain in the ass) so I don't know much more.

Ankle to ankle across the ass is a good start, avoid the butthole. Pull an edge and cut the connective tissue in between the meat and skin and just keep on doing that until you're done. Preserve it? Fug it, it's 2022, rinse it off, cut it up how you want, throw it in a ziploc and double bag it, squeezing out all the air. Date with sharpie. Throw in freezer. Figure that out later!

Yup, they're good to go. My bush rifle is a t3x compact and is absolutely deadly with 165 sst's. I want to switch to mono bullets...so I may try barnes 165 tsx's but may have to go down to 150 grain tsx's just because of the length.

Don't worry about the polymer stock either...it's fine and gets the job done. If you're concerned about it you can either get a laminated t3x based rifle or get an aftermarket boyds stock in whatever color you want.

We made a slow cook venison roast and had my nephew and s.i.l. over for a bite while her husband was at work. She's super cagey but was willing to try the roast and enjoyed it....but then my kids were eating it as well as my nephew, and then as i was chewing a piece i felt something hard. So i excused myself, went to the bathroom, and spat out the bullet. I had used a 165 nosler partition out of my 300wm for this deer.

After the kids were is bed and the wife and her sister were chatting i went and weighted the bullet...it was just over 100 grains? I cant remember...anyways, after seeing the kids eat the meat and finding the bullet, it just doesnt sit right with me. I tossed all and i mean ALL bloodshot meat and yet somehow the bullet made its way into a completely perfect roast.

Thats why I'd like to switch...i know that mono bullets have nearly 100% weight retention.

The 308 is perfectly fine for 300 and under because the deer aren't armor plated. If the buck is over 300 yards away then the goal should be to get as close as possible.

And if you go here https://www.barnesbullets.com/product/vor-tx-rifle/ and look at the 308 cal, 150 grain ammo the velocity, energy, and trajectory at 300 yards is still damn deadly...well over 1500 ft/lbs at 300 yards. With anything though the infield conditions and your own skill will dictate how far you should shoot.

But again, the 308 is perfectly fine for WA stuff in my opinion.

I think that if you're rich, then by all means go for it...but it will be no more accurate then any other bolt gun you can get nor will it be anything 'special' when you pass it on. Its just a super expensive rifle.

You can also get away with a winchester super grade (or similar) and then go slaughter animals. But with each animal take a picture with you and the rifle behind the animal. Make notes on each hunt behind the picture, tell your kids the stories behind each harvested animal, and then let them create the awe and wonder behind that rifle in each picture. That way when you pass it on they have a physical piece of your history in their hands when they look at your hunting pics.

As I like to say, "man makes the rifle, the rifle doesn't make the man".

At this point though you dont know what you want, you just like the idea of passing down a nice gun. Buy something cheaper for now and learn how to hunt first.

Regardless I'd look for a stainless barrel and action, a bolt throw thats less than 90 degrees (usually between 50 and 70 degrees is good), either a laminated stock or synthetic, around 7lbs without a scope, a magazine is fine, or a floor plate is fine too. Because of these basic but good features, tikka is a solid choice.

When you know what you want, and what you like and dont like, then look for a nice rifle. Dont waste your money at this point on something super expensive that you hate.

Tons of animals survive double lungshots at least long enough to suffer horrible and getting lost.
If you shoot lung shots with 22 lr, I honestly wish you suffer the same fate.
If you get close enough, you can take brain shots with 22 lr humanely, but you have be a decent shot and aim for ear or eye, depending on angle.
I know a poacher that have taken 50+ reindeer that way, with none lost.

There will be no decent blood trail to follow after a lung shot with .22 lr, the animal will not drop quickly, so you will have a big job tracking the poor bastard.
You'll have to track it very far, you will have barely any blood trail to track, and in worst case, it won't die for days, or even partially recover.
There's nothing ethical about hunting with an underpowered cartridge, and anyone doing so, deserve a bullet themself, not even irony.
Anyone can afford som kind of centerfire rifle, use that.
Brain shots are not that hard if close enough, though I'm not a fan, nor do I condone poaching, but it used to be pretty common to poach reindeer here until recently, and .22 lr to the brain was the method of choice for most.
.22 lr was the most logical choice, as it was mostly done in populated areas, or with herders not too far away, so they needed something subsonic and suppressed.
I repeat, I never poached myself, but I know several that did, as it used to be pretty common, and I do not condone it.

I have seen the results of retards trying to poach moose, reindeer and even a bear with .22 lr though, none of them went well with body shots, though the ones that might have gone well, would probably not be picked up on, as it's illegal as fuck here.
For any big game here, 6.5x55 with hot loads are the minimum legal cartridge here, for a reason.
With good shot placement, yes even a .223 will drop a deer, but you have very little margin of error, and most hunters are terrible marksmen.

Typical slaughter weight for reindeer here is between 100-200 lbs.
We have tens of thousands of them in my region, these are not wild reindeer, and most of the herders have 50%+ more than they are legally allowed to have, which does cause quite a bit of damage to the environment.
This is the reason I won't report any poaching to the police on reindeer, though I wouldn't poach them myself.

If it's necessary for survival, all is ok in my book.
Using methods that are less than optimal in regards to lethality for sport, is extremely unethical in my book.
I'm against all unnecessary suffering, both for game and for people.
I hunt, but I will never take a shot that I'm not very comfortable with.
I'm only comfortable with a shot if I can guarantee a fast, efficient and clean kill.
I will not take a shot at 100+ yards without a very stable position, I don't shoot moving animals unless I'm very close, preferrably I want a clean neck shot, or high shoulder broadside at range.
I'd rather let 100 animals walk than maim one, though there is always some risk of wounding, you can never be 100% certain, but I will do everything in my power to reduce the risk.
Would love to try bow hunting, but not with some stone age equipment unless it was necessary for survival, but a modern compound bow with a bradhead arrow, yeah, that is ethical in my opinion.

The reason I have my strict standards for ethical hunting, is due to personal experience.
I have seen my fair share of animals maimed by bad hunting practices, and I once badly wounded a fox on a hunt.
A wounded fox makes some of the most fucked up noises I have ever heard, and it was no doubt it was in horrible pain.
I shot it at probably 10-15 yards with birdshot, perfect broadside hit.
It did not kill it, even with a clean enough hit to knock it down violently.
The poor thing was thrashing around and making these horrible fucking noises, clearly in extreme pain, and despite closing in immediately and blasting it point blank, that was something I will never clear my conscience off completely.
I never want to put another living being through that.

6.5 PRC, 7 mm SAUM or pretty much any .30 magnum works well for all big game you have there with monolithics.
They perform extremely well, assuming you have enough velocity.
Long range is where you run into problems with monolithics for hunting, but Barnes LRX open up at pretty low terminal velocities, so it works pretty well out to longer ranges than I would consider ethical.

Nothing stopping you from loading up baby loads for smaller game.
I know many people that use .308 for small game, just load up some fmj with reduced loads for birds and shit.

I don't have a gun license so it's my only option at the moment. I don't really expect to be successful on my first trip, but for me it's the entire process of learning, growing and being out in nature that I find rewarding, not just the loot. For me personally, a kill with a recurve bow is twice as rewarding as a kill with a shotgun. I appreciate the tips though, it definitely sounds different than small game or waterfowl hunting.

Rem and Mossberg are the two big manufacturers of turkey guns. Benelli makes good shotguns, but iirc the selection of 3.5 is spotty for them. I use a Mossberg personally.

Thanks, I'll steer him towards Mossberg. I've read a lot about QC issues with recent Remingtons and they've done some harebrained moves in the past. My brother got an 1100 G3 in the mid-2000s and supposedly replacement barrels can't be had or only 11-87 barrels fit. Seems odd and not worth the hassle.

Lead shot is good to go for turkey. Your gun is also good to go, but check the choke. Tighter is generally better.
If you're looking for a turkey gun, I recommend pawn shops. That's where I got my old Wingmaster for cheap and it's better than the 870s they make now. Any chamber length is fine. Bigger is better, but by no means does the job require 3 1/2" shells.
Don't sweat the equipment. Read up on how to hunt and practice calling.

Oh don't worry I've been hunting turkeys for 12 years now. I just haven't been paying attention to what's available on the market those 12 years since my shotgun was given to me by my grandpa and he collected turkey calls so I've never even once considered buying one. I've heard stuff here and there about super heavy shot or tungsten or whatever, but I've never really paid much attention to it since what I've got has been good enough most seasons. If what worked 30 years ago works as good as what's on the market today I'll look around for used shotguns around me first, if I don't see anything worth buying I'll still probably steer him towards a 12 gauge Mossberg something to buy new.
