How do I into hiking, /out/?

I have no idea where to start. I plan on starting with simple day hikes, so I know I won't need a sleeping bag or tent or anything, but should I need? A backpack obviously (thinking of the Flash 18 Pack).
What are some things I should know before I go out and do anything?

probable get some boots or some sort of hiking foot wear. wear wool socks.

Shorts and a T-shirt? A rain jacket, of course. What sort of material should I wear?

I'd get at least a 25-30L pack and comfy boots or trail runners.
A small gas stove is good if you don't want to or are unable to make a fire. So you can brew yourself a cup of coffee or tea.

Alright, so avoid cotton.
I don't think I'll have to worry too too much about layering, since I plan on starting in the late spring, early summer.

Your most important thing for now will be to get the right shoes. Don't buy them online, get your ass in a local outdoor shop and ask a clerk for assistance. Tell him what kind of hiking you plan to do and try out a few shoes. Buy the ones that fit best.

Buy a backpack with a good hip belt. Bring a rain jacket and cover for your backpack, unless you're really really certain that it won't rain.

Get a topographic map with hiking trails of your area and enjoy your hikes.

Is there a big difference between boots and shoes? From what I understand, boots provide better support, and I'll be less likely to twist my ankle and die, and shoes are more comfortable, but give less support.

Boots are much less likely to come off your feet, while you'd be suprised how often shoes will get peeled off and lost.

Boots protect your feet better and can be just as comfortable as shoes, if- you get them properly fitted and broken in. Especially considering that you you will get dirt and rocks and sticks and shit inside your shoe while hiking.

When you first get new boots, they should be worn skin tight, there should be zero room for your foot to move in a boot, besides your toes, then broken in from there. If you don't do this, you will get blisters and shit.

If you can't do that, just stick with shoes.

you could also use trekking poles. you should try speed hiking shoes.

I'm saying that, considering it's just a day hike, you don't need to optimize for weight, or nutrients, it doesn't matter a lot if you get wet, or your shoes don't fit right. Essentially, since you'll just be out a few hours, bad decisions, inexperience, mistakes and errors won't kill you. That's what I'm trying to say.

Boots or shoes should be decided from what type of terrain one walks in.

Maybe if you have sensitive feet. But your feet swell up during the day and a boot should have room for an extra sock. Extra sock will lessen the friction against your foot and thus minimise the risk for blisters.

Alright, I get what you mean. I know that I wouldn't need to prepare for a lot, like a week's worth of food or anything, I just wanted to know what sort of things I would need, or prepare.

I've hiked in regular shoes before and it sucks. I really can't recommend it. Boots are the best, but only if you get them correctly fitted.

Mostly they're useful if you traverse a lot of elevation. Especially when descending with a lot of weight in alpine environment, they're essential. They help with balance and take stress off your knees. So they're pretty good if you're having knee problems, too.

you'll get a feeling on what to bring (what kind of clothes, how much food/water) pretty fast.

I go on dayhikes with some friends every other Sunday and one of them always goes in regular urban stuff (jeans, heavy, but profile less leather boots, messenger bag), and he's never had any real problems even on longer hikes, though our stuff is of course all sub-alpine, since anything higher than 3000ft is out of daytrip distance.

I used to go on short hikes without even a water bottle. I would just drink a lot beforehand a lot afterwards.

Just go hiking and determine what you need from your experiences. Start going on longer hikes and adjust your equipment to meet your needs.

Your feet will swell as you walk, so while getting them tight is important, you don't want them to get far too tight after just two hours of walking.

How is hiking is pants in the summer? I would assume it'd be too hot for pants, whether they're blue jeans, or pants specifically for hiking.
