we have this thread every couple months when some citidiot watches some bushcraft youtuber thinking they're going to be a badass mountain man with muh "cool boomer biker it's the 70's again" zippo, but for some reason they never actually manage to go outdoors.

Anyone who does go outdoors for longer than a daytrip realizes zippos are trash and a bic or clipper does everything a zippo does and better

The issue is the lighter fluid evaporating, not a problem if you're only /out/ for a couple of days, but any longer trips and you could be in trouble

yeah, also you can remove the flint and use it as a rudimentary firesteel, if you carry charcloth in your kit(it doesn't weigh anything) you have a pretty good backup if you forget to top up the fuel before going /out/. This in my opinion makes clippers far better lighters than bics

piezo lighters are really nice for winter camping because you don't need to take your gloves off to fuck with the wheel, just push the plunger down until it sparks
They also don't use a battery to ignite if that's what you're worried about, though obviously anon's does for the light, it's just a spring that whacks a piezoelectric crystal to create a charge across a spark gap. No idea if they're more or less reliable than a normal bic, I don't think I've ever had either fail on me before I lost it or broke it some other way.

What I meant is that the whole flint and striker assembly comes out easily and you can use it in a pinch to start fires if your lighter runs out of fuel. If you tried to do this with a bic the lighter would then be ruined.

Not at all, and I hate that hipsters have appropriated it in recent years. I bought a Thunderbird insert once and it sucked. Maybe I just got a lemon but I didn't get the chance to try out their warranty because the lighter got stolen. I have one of the new Zippo licensed (I'm pretty sure they don't manufacture them) butane inserts and I've had no issues with it.

I'm inclined to agree with the other posters saying Zippos are outdated. These days I pretty much only go on day hikes so my lighters are pretty much only for cigarettes and even then I've moved away from standard Zippos, mostly to jet lighters. I do think it's worth having 1 or 2 Zippos, they're $10 at Walmart and situationally can be very useful in that they stay lit when you set them down and you can use a ton of different fuels. However if you want to buy a lighter and not have to worry about it for an extended period then something more modern is the way to go.

not op but japan makes it really easy for westeners since thats their policy for the most part. their policy being that you're expected to be a humble servant to any foreigner. most servers speak somewhat understandable english, train stations alternate between saying next destination in english and in japanese, google maps or memorization does the work of navigation, and then most signs are in english or are easily discernable. for example 7/11 (which is actually a japanese company) is still branded like it is in the west and is one of the most widely available stores over there for grocery store tier food (no poo behind the counter or boons stealing shit, 7/11 is comparable to a wawa or scaled down grocery store over there). overall not that hard to live in if you're just getting food / going out / etc. rural japan is where it would actually be difficult

Yeah, just get a bic for your fire kit. I still carry my zippo, but I'm a smoker, so it just gets used for cigarettes. Your actual fire kit should have a bic, and a couple other options. that being said, you can always seal it with a bit of bike innertube around it if you want, but it shouldn't be your primary means of fire.

t. has owned both & never buying the torjet shit again. if you can find them where you are or can order them online get the k-twos.
the k-twos have none of the reliability issues & last forever if properly looked after. they always get pinched before the piezo ends up dying on me.

They really aren't that bad if you do the wick and cotton right. (You have to weave the wick back and forth between the bits of cotton, and some people also change the factory cotton out for various stuff including tampon material, though I haven't gone that far.) I haven't filled mine in like three weeks and it's still working fine. They stop working in like two or three days the way they come from the factory though.

They're catalytic, no fire involved except to light the burner so IIRC there's no real danger of burning anything down.

Generally stays hot a bit longer than the disposable HotHands handwarmers I buy at the gas station, but it's still got all the disadvantages of a Zippo with regards to needing to fill it up every day if you wanna use it so I still wind up just using disposable ones anyway.

The main issue is you cannot fuel them up in prep for an outing. Once fueled they cannot be tipped over. which means you cannot fuel them up and throw them in your pack, you have to fuel it and immediately light it and then once lit it can be tipped.
This means you must bring the hand warmer, the fuel can, and the fueling tool and do the whole procedure in the woods ever time you want to use it.
I gave it to my fiance and i'll be sticking with disposables from now on.

Take one of these plastic baggy cellophane food packaging fuckers, and wrap the Zippo inside one into an airtight bundle. You'll easily get 6 weeks from a single refill this way. Doing this additionally waterproofs the lighter further. The plastic bag needs to be of the soft, elastic kind of plastic variety, not the hard crinkly kind, which shreds easily. And you need to make it AIRTIGHT. Like, wrap it really tightly around the lighter.

Additionally, bring a Bic and a firesteel for backup. Sounds redundant, I know, but why not cover all the bases, right? Or, Torjet torches are good too.

Torjets can be disassembled easily, this allows you to adjust the gas valve more than the little nub on the side would usually permit you to do. I've custom tuned all of my Torjets and they're a fucking blast to use now.

I love Zippo lighters. Been dicking around with them since I was a little kid in the 70's. Carry one daily, smoking or not. Even use one in my workshop to light my smudge pot. If you are working out of a fixed camp for weeks on end or day trips they are fine. Vehicle deployed or on the fringe of civilization, no problem. Anything even remotely long on foot from a camp they are pretty much nonsense. As a survival tool, again nonsense unless you have a way to fuel them daily. On my LBE I always carry two fresh and tested Bic brand full size lighters in my survival kit. No reason to say more.

Bic is much more reliable and will last forever. Never had one run out desu, you lose them before that ever happens
Only had a gas station crackhead lighter ever run out when i open them up and put the gas setting to max so the flame shoots up like 5 inches.
They're not cool, but butane is just so much more reliable long-term since it needs to be pressurized, and therefore won't leak and evaporate.
