I often bank fish in areas like this as someone who has been fly fishing for about a month. All you need to learn is how to roll cast, and imo it's actually easier for me then the normal overhead cast because it doesn't require the timing component.

Maybe I'm just doing some incorrect version of it, or maybe you're wrong. Idk, like I said I'm new to fly fishing. I usually roll cast 2-3 times to get the full length out with the first cast being deliberately weaker so the fly doesn't go high but just ends up a bit farther out in the water for follow on casting where it doesn't get near me. The only time I have issues is when there are roots at my feet in front of me as I'm trying to get line out.

when i came close to the shore people yelled for me to clear the way and tell everyone behind me to make room too
there was this fly fisher with 2 handed rod who would make every weird cast imaginable and sometimes his line would go along the path into the forest where people walked in it was beautiful it was like circus act
he would roll the line around him into the water and then launch it farther than people with spinning rods or just for the fun of it make a back cast 10 meters into the woods

i remember we all clapped on every cast and he also had a dog with him

Just ordered my first "expensive" rod. $110, but $125 after shipping and tax. Took me a long time and many $50-60 rod purchases to finally narrow down what I like in a rod, and I found one that seemed to have them all. Unfortunately, all of the attributes that I like rarely come together as a whole, so I'm likely paying a little bit more for niche than overall quality in that price bracket... but at least it's what I want and that's hard to find without building a rod myself or paying for some absurdly-priced custom. Now... let's just hope it's everything I think it will be, and as nice as people claim... been there done that more than a couple of times. I hate being so particular.

Okay guys, I know I can set up a couple rods with 30-40lb mono for offshore fishing, easy, but asking again from the previous thread, will a 22 foot center console handle heading offshore 20-30 miles assuming the weather isn’t bad and I’m not a complete retard (which is a stretch since I am what some would describe as “profoundly retarded”, but work with me here)

I’ve wanted a boat for years and I’m finally at the point where I can buy a decent used one so I’m just considering my options for chasing mahi, tuna, etc
On a related note, what the fuck is up with new boat prices? 50-60k for a basic 18 foot in almost all cases. How are normal people supposed to be getting into boating? Are there really that many dentists and doctors out there who are wanting to hit the saltwater to be creating this market?

We used to take an 18' aluminum Klamath cc ~50-60 miles to the offshore spots here in socal. Assuming you get a deep v hull meant for open water and a reliable 4 stroke outboard you should be fine. Just be on top of your weather conditions, take all the necessary safety equipment and don't go alone.

High resale value for desirable hull forms and and limited production capacity, American labor, and American materials. You can get a 30 year loan on your $100,000 23 foot Center Console, which really expands who theoretically can buy new, but I’ve known for a while that if I upgrade past my 18 foot Deep V (which was a bare hull I took in trade, and then powered and rigged myself), I’m probably looking at boats made in the 90s.

Yeah, the 40hp Mercury EFI on my boat cost as much as everything else on the boat combined and it was 15 years old when I bought it, though it was a low hour, dealer maintained, fresh water only unit.

Go to the Keys for a weekend or wherever you fish and get a real opinion. Those currents and storms that pop up out of nowhere (I’m at one corner of the Bermuda Triangle) are no joke. It will be a clear day and a small cloud will start building in the middle of a humid blue sky and within half an hour it’s a storm cell with 50mph winds that batters anybody in its path.

I would not risk $60k and your life because of opinions of neckbeards on 4chan. They will tell you to get a Hobie and spend the rest on Japanese crankbaits and bad dragon dildos.

Learn your inlets and don't take any chances on weather and you'll be fine. I'd recommend getting a fairly deep hull. The boat market right now is fucked up though, some used boats 5 years old are selling for MSRP.

I doubt that they're much worse than other rods at that price point. If money isn't a huge issue I would opt for a something in the $150-200 range like a Reddington Crosswater 9-WT.

Any coastalfags here that go crabbing, shrimping, and clamming? I love chasing redfish, trout, flounder, and other fish but I rarely keep them. I've been looking for ways to harvest more of my own food from the water and fishing for shellfish seems like a relaxing way to do it.

I've been thinking about walking a lot of the local docks for crabs cuz they seem to be everywhere around them when I'm fishing with dead bait. I've had luck shrimping around docks with a cast net too so even if I have no luck handlining crabs in I can toss the net around.

A couple of little gurglers for mackerel I made. Top is jelly fritz and a bit of orange hackle for the tail. I reckon mackerel would identify orange pretty well as they feed on orange insects when out in the deep ocean. Orange is also going to be easy to spot for me out in the water.

Bottom is more of a bait fish, maribou, dubbing to pad it out a bit and hackle with 4 strands of pearl flashabou pulled together to form a single rib.

Got my TFO Professional rod from tackledirect in less than 48hrs with the free economy shipping which is cool... but I noticed that the little sticker on the cork says "made in china" when the rods are supposedly made in south korea. is that just the cork or what? odd... but anyways, rod was safe in a rod tube... but can't help but notice thee guides are ever so slightly tweaked... which ALWAYS seems to happen when you order a rod. it's not enough to matter... but fuck man. I got the medium light and it feels amazing, moderate-fast action like advertised. respectably light and balanced. it's got the whip to it I was after without taking forever to settle down like the typical wet noodle moderate rod. a good versatile rod for both treble lures and finesse applications. this is gonna be my 1/8 to 1/4 lure rod which is 99% what I throw. hate throwing them on stiff ass typical rods, the load up on cast just isn't satisfying like it is on a rod that bends a little.

I recently stepped my game up and bought a rod that was almost $200 after hearing from popular YouTube fishing channels how much nicer expensive rods felt. Basically, I got Jew'd. It felt no better than my $50 Daiwa, or my $70 Lew's rod. I'm pretty pissed since I can't get a refund, and I will never take the bait again. Do yourselves a favor and don't make the same mistake. Is a $100 Daiwa/Shimano/Lews as good as it gets? Sure, you can get "better" guides and reelseat and whatever for more, but it doesn't do anything for feel overall. It's just bling.

I don't think you can refund something "just because I dun like" and I've used it anyways. It looks a tiny bit nicer but doesn't feel any nicer than the average rod. They're probably using the same blank just with nicer guides and reelseat.

Fishing newfag / hiking midfag here. Any fellow PNW fags here know where I can find some secluded alpine lakes with fish like from the NWFS channel? The guy always seems to find awesome spots that are <1 day backpacking from his car, or even on the side of a forest road, that have nobody else camping or fishing near them.

Most of these places seem like they're in national forests judging by the look / isolation / ability to fish them. But how do I go about finding these seemingly pristine and totally empty places? I imagine the lakes and streams listed on the NF websites are not the route to go since these will be more popular fishing/camping spots.

I live in northern CA near the Oregon border, so plenty of natl forests around. Not asking for anyone to spill their secret spots, I just want to get a sense of how to find good spots that I can camp and fish at. Do I just go fuck around in the woods until I find a good lake, or is there a way to find these small alpine lakes ahead of time?

I do that and I'm white as the driven snow. We'll catch a fuckton of bluegill and crappie and maybe hit the pier for bluefish and whiting and fry that shit up. If I net a fuckload of shrimp I'll do a big shrimp boil.

The difference between high and mid level rods is really only incremental. You get slightly better components and it might be slightly better made (and hopefully properly aligned on the spine). It is much more important to carefully match the rod to the lure weight, reel size and line strength. A well matched mid price combo will be better to use than an expensive mis-matched combo.

Correct. Do take the time to learn some one-handed spey techniques like the snake roll cast for resetting your line after each drift. Hooked4lifeca has helpful videos.

Also, you get more distance by keeping your road as close to your anchor line as possible (while still keeping your rod inside your anchor line / d loop line).

Roll cast is the same as a fwd cast when casting overhead. Don’t get sloppy.

I’d go with Redington or the Orvis clearwater. You’ll catch fish with either especially nymphing.

they aren't combos. I have a $100 reel on them both. Fact of the matter is that it feels like almost the same fucking blank with nicer looking components. Not even the same company, but the blank is probably from China like them all, and probably made on the same line. I'm done with buying expensive rods, it's a meme. Expensive reels do actually feel like they are built better, not necessarily any more smooth, but built beefier.

You probably got chinked, bought simple rods for premium price. You might want to look for something more prominent that will get you the proper materials in your blank but those are more likely at $350-400 or more in the price range. Or pay $2000 and up and used hand crafted spliced bamboo rods.

Nah, my Lew's IM8 feel great for sub $100 and are light as a feather. I think I'll stick with them. Never even had an issue with budget guides, regardless of line choice or saltwater use.

I mean ideally, you'd buy a "real" fly rod (higher quality) but if you're insistent on bare-bones budget get an eagle claw "featherweight" fly rod and pair it with an echo base 4/5 reel and a scientific anglers Aircel line. get a 4 weight line for the 3/4 weight rod, or a 6 weight line for the 5/6 weight rod. if you want something nicer get an echo lift kit, it's got an echo lift rod, an echo base reel, and the backing and fly line are already installed.
