Over your experience, what tools did you learn were important the hard way and which tools have you found to be useless/unneeded? Climate/area as well

honestly, none.
i've bought tools for one job, found em useless and set aside -- only to find they were great for another project down the road.
PNW, several acres of forest. Quite a few random projects to work on.

Camping, boreal forest. Important: tarps - spent a few nights in just above freezing temperature rain just watching as my tarp leaks and water runs onto the sleeping bag. You just listen to the rain and feel every new droplet soak in to your sleeping bag.
Also needle and thread - fixing a torn bugnet and a glove.
Shoes and socks - you want leather boots for light freezing temperatures and when it thaws all other trekking shoes are meme in these conditions.
SUNSCREEN
Unneeded : 3rd party water bottles, water bladders, swiss army knves, multitools, extra cordage (everyone brings too much and too thick), shovels, carabiners weighting more than 10g, travel pillows, ponchos (mac in a sac exists)

maybe for camping it's not 'needed', but since getting a new one (hadn't had one since i was a kid, and it was stolen in 6th grade) i find myself using mine pretty much daily out on the property

even camping though, is there anything more comfy than being able to whittle by the campfire with the same tool you're using to open your beer with?

I think my greatest shortcoming from being a casual trail dayhiker is not bringing enough water. I usually just bring 1 bottle of water for a 3-5 hour hike and its not really enough for comfort. Especially if something was to go wrong.
Besides just bringing more water, I should be carrying a good water filter and one of those soft plastic bottles so i can gather on the hike and also not be completely fucked for water if i somehow got lost.

Got all those things now though and will be bringing them on any day hikes.

Hatchet, because it was inefficient with firewood.
Huge amounts of water (96 oz, or 3 Nalgenes), because they were way too heavy and I now have a purification setup.

More warm layers than you think, and extra socks. I was winter camping once, and the additional layers let me get a few catnaps even though a snowstorm blew in.
Paracord, to tie up a tarp shelter and prevent the bitch from blowing away.
Folding saw, because it can handle large-diameter firewood while being less heavy than the hatchet.
Big fuckoff knife, because it can be used to bridge the gap left by the hatchet for splitting kindling and making tinder.

Forgot to mention, quality food is also necessary. My first few trips I brought fucking potatoes and carrots and hot dogs, which I baked in the coals and cooked on a stick. That was a hassle, as the vegetables cooked unevenly. Now I prefer cured sausages, trail mix, tortillas, cheese, oats, etc. Basically, food that can either be eaten as-is or cooked quickly in boiling water.

Longest trip was a full summer in the BWCA, have been camping/hiking around east coast and midwest for whole life. I have friends with jetboils and hatchets, but neither of those are necessary, they just get in your way, though I've never brought them myself.

NE corridor. Having a warm sleeping bag makes every shitty day survivable. If you can get a good few hours of sleep you can power through another day. Specfic items? Buff was surprisingly versatile and warm. Helps seal the neck off and dries quick.

Useless: saw on most backpacking trips. Processed the wood by kicking and half the time didn't care to make a fire. Other item I ditched was large knife. Besides cutting a package open or some cheese, unused. Replaced with a small victorinox with a toenail clipper and tweezers

Essential:
Muck boots- You're gonna walk through swamp at some point. You want this.
Durable rain gear- this place gets wet as fuck
Fire starter- Hard to get a fire going in wet ass swamps
Machete- Vines, thorns, bushes, tall grass. It's everywhere.
Neck gaiter and spf shirts- it's hot and humid and the sun will beat on you.
Rash guards- especially important if you're camping on the beach
Weather and tide app- Weather changes quick and if you're on the beach you need to make sure you're camp doesn't end up washed away at high tide.

Unneeded:
Hatchet- A good machete is way more important
Jetboil- Just eat an MRE
Cast iron- nice to bring if you're with your homies and wanna cook in style but unnecessary

Losing the hatchet for big fuck off knife plus folding saw has also been, from my experience, a more useful and lighter option. Though my "big fuck off knife" is actually a small machete, it swings just like a hatchet. Only minimally under performs to one in exchange for a lighter, more packable and more versatile tool.

I live in Arizona. I went camping deep on the desert where I could get some solitude, but I was dangerously close to the border. One my second day I say three Mexicans far in the distance and they had no clue I was watching them illegally invade my country. I was furious I didn't have a rifle because I would have killed them dead and I would have literally never been caught. It makes me fantasize about stalking out there now with a ghillie suit and 3 day bag just scanning for spics to ice. I guarantee others have done it, there is literally no way you can possibly get caught, no one is out there and the bodies will likely never be found. If the Border Patrol finds some dead beaners they will assume it was other beaners who did it and wouldn't even bother to investigate.

I hunt and forage for wild edibles and mushrooms in the Holly Shelter and Angola Game Lands. I fish the New River for redfish, trout, and flounder and the Northeast Cape Fear and various millponds for bass and panfish. Most of the camping in the area I do at the Croatan National Forest but I've camped out on the Topsail Beach a few times. I also go crabbing and shrimping a lot when I can.
