Hi, /out/. I'm planning a 2-night camping/backpacking trip somewhere in Colorado in late May. I've done super basic camping at pre-made sites before but never backpacking out in the middle of nowhere and camping. What all gear should I acquire? I've always borrowed my gear but I want to buy my own now so I'm starting from scratch.

What are some good backpacks? Tents? Sleeping pads? I need a 2-person tent and a pad wide enough for 2 people as well. I'd like to keep my pack under 40lb if possible and my partner's under 25-30lb. Is that doable?

General camping advice is also appreciated.

The weight is doable for sure.

Get a three person tent for two people. Marginal weight difference and you'll be glad for the space. I recommend the MSR Hubba Hubba 3.

Osprey makes excellent bags. I think Kelty has some cheaper ones. Milsurp ones are cheaper but I imagine much heavier too.

I recommend Thermarest for pads but again they're expensive.

Map + Compass
Phone + Portable Charger
Headlamp + Lantern
Water Bladder
Stove + Pot (I like my Primus Classic Trail Stove)
Small Towel
Wool Socks
Knife
Tarp/Footprint

Like one anon already said. Always get a tent one size bigger, so 3 person tent for 2 people, 4 person tent for 3 people etc. Also just push two sleeping pads together and don't get one big one. They are way too bulky for backpacking and having two makes it possible for you both to carry one.

A map and a compass are not needed for a 2-day trip. If your phone has a good enough GPS connection, it will do. Just make sure to bring a power bank. If you really want to get a map + compass then actually learn how to use them, don't just waste money and lug them around for no reason like most do.

Definitely bring a way to purify water just in case if you're in the middle of nowhere. Either boil it for a while, bring purification tablets or a filter. I'd say tablets are the best for a beginner because they're a cheap get out of jail free card and require no maintenance like a filter (which is also way more expensive).

Keeping your bag under 40lb is pretty easy and cheap if you don't bring a lot of unnessecary shit with you. Don't bring too many spare clothes, just make sure to waterproof the few ones in your pack. Do bring a couple of pairs of socks though.

Follow pic related but skip down to where you already have experience.

The biggest difference between backpacking and car camping is with car camping, it's not a big deal to bring extras since weight is not an issue, and if you forget somehting it's not the end of the world.

Your first backpacking trip should be a campsite about ~1 mile in, that way it's far enough that you don't get lazy and rely on the car for everything (water weight, food storage, clothes), but close enough if you forget something important it's only a 30 minute walk back out.

Practice runs are a no go because I'm currently overseas in a desert and this trip is planned for the short time I get to visit home before going back overseas. I've got plenty of experience rucking and know how to navigate with a map and compass. I'm not worried about any of that. Mostly just wondering what kind of gear is actually worth the money and what kind of packing list I'd want for that area and time of year.
Also food recommendations. Every time I've gone camping I've noticed my appetite goes way down and I don't feel the need to eat as much. But I feel like I should still try to pack at least 2000 calories per day per person right? What kind of foods would you recommend other than just filling a bag with freeze dried meals?

I was single then lol. I had a big oversized tent and sleeping bag that was over a decade old, no sleeping pad. I wanted a wide sleeping pad rather than two pads because I only need like 30% more width to be comfortable together, not double. These inflatable pads are also expensive as fuck to be buying two of them.

Grab two zlites, they don't risk leaking air plus you can use them as lounge chairs outside of the tent

two pads is a lot more flexible than one, and a lot easier to pack too. I would get two separate cause that opens the door for solo trips as well. If your main motivation is "buy one instead of two" then the foam zlite pads will fit your needs well.

If you plan on spending any time in the tent besides sleeping (e.g., storing your bags, changing, etc.) then yes. They also sell 2.5 person tents which work alright for this person. If the forecast is good and you'll be spending zero time in your tent besides sleeping, you can get away with the exact number sized tent. But usually only UL fags do that since it's not very comfy

don't waste your money on mountainhouse meals, those are for cityidiots who want to play weekend warrior.
Anyone who goes backpacking more than once a year buy sthings like related instead

not OP but I figured this would be a good place to ask. I'm also going camping over the summer and want a decent tent. The first time I went camping I used mostly CIF (issued) gear including the sleeping system. I didnt want to just sleep in the open so I bought one of those cheap A frame tents and it did NOT do well when it snowed. Would this be a decent 4 season tent? Its just me and maybe the dog on rare occasions. The dog didnt really fit in the last tent well so I had to curl up and the condensation sucked.

For the food, just bring some that you like and make sure it can be cooked in a stove and the pots you bring, you can cook some complex good meals if you want or just eat a can of tuna. Do not fall on the MRE/precooked for hiking meals meme, just buy regular things that wont spoil while you are there

I live in Havelock NC. There isn't a damn thing out here unless you're looking for crack or busted strippers. Id rather get a tent beforehand rather than show up at the REI half way to the spot only to see the tents dont fit my budget or criteria.

Why are you looking for a four season tent?
It’s gonna be hot as hell any time you have to use the fly when it’s warm outside, and still probably uncomfortable even without the fly in the summertime.
A good three season tent will be fine for anything outside of multiple feet of snow overnight, and some even have optional inserts to make them less drafty in the cold.

Havelock is a shithole but the Croatan is right there and you got the Neuse River. You can always drive to New Bern and check Academy for tents.

Formerly stationed at Lejeune, spent a lot of time at Cherry Point and I still live in East NC.

Do North Carolina winters really have that much snow?
You probably don’t need a dedicated four season tent, just get a good three season tent and you will be fine unless you are planning trips where it will snow over a foot overnight.
Your sleep system is way more important than your tent selection when it comes to staying warm at night.
