If I take my 3-4 month old kitten camping with me will he get lost or run away? He is attatched so I'd like to just let him free roam around camp while I'm there at day or sit in my bag during a hike, and zip him in the tent with me at night. I don't think he'd run away but he is very retarded and couldn't last on his own during the winter if I lost him in the woods.

You're the retarded one. I take my 12 year old cat that l just got last year camping and hiking. He definitely isn't used to it. He stays on a harness and leash outside the tent and I am always holding the leash. He will hike, but when he gets tired I put him in his backpack.

Yea i wouldnt risk it. I had an outdoor/indoor cat that liked being let out during the day and would come home at afternoon/night. He was fine when my senpai went camping, but would stay very close to us. If he got lost, i wouldve had no worries him finding us or being able to stay alive. Dude was tough af. Cats unfamiliar with being outside, I probably would not be as confident about.

I would use a harness if it isnt used to the outdoors. My cat is an 8 year old barn cat who follows me around when i go hiking just fine. But she has been an outdoor cat for her entire long life and already knows how to survive and find her way home.

So he's an indoor outdoor cat. He does alright on hikes except when there are switchbacks, large open spaces, and fast moving water. He'll get scared when people are coming until they pet him or unless they have dogs. He loves dogs. He loves people, but moreso when we're at home. On trails he likes people but only if they stop and talk to him or pet him. He's a good boy. I'd never let him roam free at a campground though.

He's smart around cars but he got off his harness once and took off towards a road, but stopped 25 feet before it when he heard a car. He stopped and whined until I came and got him. He's pretty good for an old cat. He's made it almost 5 miles on his own in a day.

And you better be prepared for predators. I've had two dogs rush out of nowhere and come for him. I threw him to my gf and slapped the shit out of them. That could have went really wrong.

Lol if you're in the Southeast US, it'll get eaten by a bobcat most likely. A bear may eat it if hungry enough.

In the central US, it'll most likely get eaten by a mountain lion real quick.

In the north, grizzlies, black bears, and others will eat it.

Of course, if the cat goes out in the open in a clearing, there's a good chance that a hawk will just scoop it up.

1) HUMANS, either to eat, or sub-humans, to have fun torturing a animal/take it as a pet/kill shelter
2) Coyotes, especially the hybrid ones with wolves/dogs, LARGER, HUNGRY, and like a Racoon and a Goat mating together, capable of chewing up/eating most things(will do so even if poisonous)

Put him in a harness. If you start now the take to it well enough. And you have to do it a lot now. Cat become unabaptable pretty quick when then get older. I trained this cat to travel with me. StilL have her. Dont travel much anymore.

Cats function by memorizing their territory. When I've taken cats outside in a new area, and watched them run, they will literally jump into the same obstacle they can't jump over when they are spooked because they don't know the terrain. This is what makes them so nervous in the car.
I just had one sneak in my car last week, and she was huffing and drooling within a 10 mile round trip.
I also once watched a cat that snuck outside, and disappeared. I stayed up 24 hours looking for the cat as she was about 3 miles from her home. Unlike some of the stories of pets finding their way back, she did not, and despite immense efforts and posters, she has been gone to this day.
Now it doesn't mean you can't train them. You can leash them like the guy above. I've also taught a cat to follow me about 4 to 5 blocks. Male cats usually have a wider territory too, but it brings risk that can get them lost. So besides training them, you should be aware of that.

Also, be prepared to carry it 95% of time, because cats are terrible as "walking" pets, especially in the area they are for the first time.

We brought our cats with us. Keep your cat on a leash with a nice no slip harness.

We never had issues with our cat Artemis. She wandered off at first but came right back. She stayed in the camp the whole week and slept with me in my sleeping bag. She was a 100% indoor cat other than the few camping trips.

I think if you start bringing your cat out now it will do you good. Just know cats are sensitive to loud sounds. They are trainable and very intelligent. Bring something for them to hide in. (Seriously a cardboard box with a hole cut in it)

Cats need to rest often, so if you take them on hikes they need a backpack or something.

Cool cat, here are my 6 month old cats Skinman Birdman Coneman 3 and Steve.

My father in law had a Savannah cat that we used to take out on a leash, you had to with those things as they will bolt but they need exercise. I haven't had much luck with my normal cats and harnesses, even trying at months old, they just start walking backwards to try to get out of it.
