Let's make this a catch-all thread for hammock gear.

I'm looking for a cheap down top quilt $200 or under rated for 20 Fahrenheit, 8 oz max. Does anybody have any suggestions (or deals they found)?

best tip i learned during that time is that during summer you can sleep inside cheap 2-layered hammock´s sleeping pad compartment and it acts like a bug net

It's not really lighter unless you're peak summer and are leaving parts of it behind like the fly and uq and such. Nor is really cheaper, although piece things together how you l like over time. As for comfort I generally prefer a firm mattress but sleep great in a hammock. This led me to choose a hammock for everything but winter.

People have died of air poisoning while cooking in their tent. It's like leaving your car on in a closed garage. Not a terribly uncommon occurrence. I just read a news article about a family with 3 kids that passed away one evening after dinner while "camping in the great outdoors".

Hammocks are actually comfy unlike those 52 cm wide tapered sleeping pads. Also you are not entombed in a coffin where you can't stretch or stand up, and if it's raining you're not getting water on your sleeping gear every time you need to get out to piss.

i was not talking about cooking inside my tent but opening it and cooking in the vestibule

Underquilts insulate underneath the hammock, but are they meant to be drawn around your whole body like a blanket burrito situation? If not- you still need either a sleeping bag or a blanket to go on top, right? So why not just skip the underquilt and use a good sleeping bag in the hammock to kill two birds with one stone?

Because the insulation in a bag needs to be lofted and puffed up in order to work, and the part you are laying on gets compressed. This is why ground pads exist too.

problem is the sleeping bag will squish between you and the hammock because of you´re weight and lose all the qualities that make it insulate you from the cold
thus you have a cold pooper and a bad nights rest

underquilt goes under the hammock and basically acts as you´re squished up sleeping bag bottom, also protects from the wind

its not a sleeping bag, it takes just as much room from your backpack as a sleeping bag though
what you sleep in depends on how cold it is outside, during summer a blanket or sleeping bag and a foam pad or underguilt and during winter underquilt and winter sleeping bag

I’ve also though about getting a Jetboil and hanging kit, pitching my tarp really close to the hammock, and hanging it from where the tieouts attach to the edge.
I also though about hanging it from the hammock ridgeline, but decided that was too risky.
If I had a tarp with side panel pulls, pitching it inside out and hanging it from that would be perfect

It doesn’t really matter if you use a sleeping bag or quilt on top of you in the hammock, if you have a bag just unzip it and use it like a quilt so it’s easy to get in and out of.
If you don’t have either, and are trying to decide what to get, plenty of people use a quilt when sleeping on the ground as well as a hammock, but it’s mostly personal preference what you go with.
Either way, you will always need some kind of insulation under you

It also helps to have a set ridgeline so you always get a consistent sag once you've figured out how much sag you need to get the perfect lay, and a lot of the people complaining that it's not comfortable, bought hammocks that were too small for them to get a good lay in.

Ridgeline is very handy. Use a non-stretchy rope and adjust it when you nail that hammock lay. It's also good for drying things and getting some balance in plant out of the hammock.

lmao good luck out there anon. ultra light fags are fucking obnoxious getting a slightly better underquilt that ways a bit more is worth its weight in gold every single time compared to being cold to shave off a couple of ounces on the back when I am sure your most likely obese/fat and can shave a few pounds off the front first.

This worked out really well for me. A few of the places I camp have sandy soil. A windy night would cause stakes to be shaken loose. And rain would cause my fairly large silnylon tarp to sag. Self tensioning guylines solved both problems. I’m not sure if they be better or worse with a flat cut tarp.

I've got a lumbar fusion, severely deteriorated discs in lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine. My neck is basically bone-on-bone, with nerves compressed, muscle spasms, etc.

Only problem I've had with a hammock (once I learned how to lay and found my sweet spot) is trying to sleep without an underquilt in temps below 60F. Gets pretty chilly pretty quick. Other than that, I sleep better there than in my own bed desu.

Not a hammock sleeper, but I'm coming to you guys because you actually tie knots that cannot slip. I got tired of paracord stretching in the rain and my previously tight tarp now popping around in the wind. So I tried bank line until I realized it's so thin that it's annoying tie off and it is damn near non-reflective with a flashlight at night.

So then it was UHMWPE like zing-it. Easy to handle, wouldn't stretch in the rain, nice ugly bright colors. Except none of my friction knots, short of prussic loops, hold worth a shit. Sliding half hitch, adjustable grip hitch, and even a midshipman's knot all slide as shorten under tension. Right now I'm just using bowlines and trucker's hitches for everything, but truckers hitches only adjust tension in one direction. Is that just life with zing-it, or do you guys use something else?

Pic rel is a Dyneema/polyester blend, and claims it holds knots.
I used to use a prussic loop in lieu of the traditional loop used with a truckers hitch, maybe try that since you said prussics still worked and truckers aren’t as adjustable as you would like.
Tbh I prefer using hardware over tying knots tho

Adjustable hitchs make it easier than most to add additional wraps before you hitch it off. If prusiks are holding with 4 wraps, try starting at 4 on your adjustable hitch and go up from there.

Weird question; abrasion resistance isn’t really a factor for a tarp. Silpoly isn’t as abrasion resistant as nylon. It would make a terrible tent bottom. It’s more waterproof, less stretchy, and more UV resistant while weighing about the same (an 11x9 tarp is about 13oz if it’s 30d silpoly or silnylon). They’re also close to the same price.

It sagged a noticeable amount before the self tightening guy lines, but only in the worst conditions (lots and lots of rain, high winds). The ridge line didn’t look out of place, but the sides definitely got flappy. But keep in mind hammock tarps are enormous. Mine is 11x9.

Idk what this insulation is, but as far as I know, Climashield Apex is the best single-strand synthetic insulation, and it’s polyester based, not silk.

I've slept to close to 0c with the DD hammock underquilt and it was fine, but I also had my tarp to shield me for the wind and a good sleeping bag. I wouldn't take it out in -5c even if my life depended on it, because it was only barely adaquite for the zero temperatrue. I also had to modify it heavily by cutting it with a knife so that I can get it to fit around my hammock correctly.
The DD hammocks top quilt is a sorry excuse for equipment and is only useable in the middle of summer.
All in all, they work if you don't have any other options and the underquilt is a nice entrypoint to the underquilt world because it's the cheapest I know about. I would skip the topquilt though, and go straight to some cheap sleeping bag instead.

Yes, however you would need one less then if you had a down bag. Also the ground conducts heat better then air.

The difference is so small it’s basically irrelevant.

Having done this, you unfortunately will need something. You might get away with less depending on the bag but any substantial cold or wind will be an issue without a UQ or at least a pad of some kind underneath you.

I like the idea of hammock camping as there's less to carry. I'd rather just use a tent in winter because carrying an extra underquilt defeats the whole purpose for me.

The same stuff applies, the same fucking items and just as much of them, roughly at the same weight too. Sleeping in a hammock without insulation under you is such a fringe phenomenon it's not even worth a try.

I’ll break this down for those who may not know.

While lying in a hammock, even with a fairly flat lay, your butt will still sag somewhat. Your never totally flat. That’s the way our bodies naturally hinge.

That hinge point isn’t perfectly centered as far as weight distribution goes.There’s more body weight above the hinge point than below it. If a hammock is hung perfectly level, you can feel yourself slowly sliding downward toward your hips. It’s especially noticeable if you lie on your back, directly parallel to the hammocks ridge line. Nearly everyone sleeps on their side, diagonally to the ridge line, but we also relax parallel because it’s super comfortable and in a sort of sitting up position (like those adjustable beds for old folks). Sliding is less noticeable when lying diagonally but it still happens.

The solution is pretty simple; just handle your foot end slightly higher. How much higher is something you have to figure out for yourself.
