Anywhere between Muir Beach to Shelter Cove. There is plenty of easy rocky shore access at the parks along the coast following CA state route 1 from Bodega Bay through the Mendo coast, but the easy spots always draw the most fishermen. There are some spots that are very hard to get to yet have some of the best water (you should always look for water that drops steeply, AKA off of cliffs or next to tall rocks), some spots might even strand you at high tide but offer great fishing on all sides. I would recommend using google maps to find these spots and just look for trails off the turnouts. I would also recommend exploring your spots at low tide so you know where the fish will be at high tide

We do, ESPECIALLY when the swells are bad and you are on a beach facing the Northwest. I have only seen it happen a couple times, but the more you surf fish these exposed beaches, the more likely you'll encounter those giant sneakers that kill people. I am tiny guy, so I always got my eyes peeled out there for those telltale signs.

Thanks for the advice, I mostly fish from north of jenner to salt point area, and sometimes Mendo, you have any rockfishing spots you can recommend north of Fisk Mill? It becomes a lot of private property up there and gets really sandy.

You can try around the Bluff Top Trail in Sea Ranch but like you said it gets real sandy and private up there. There are probably a couple good cliffs you'll be able to wet your line at, but they are far and few in between. Also beware of the Del Mar Landing SMR. The other Shell Beach is also very nice and there are a few good bluffs adjacent to the beach. Usually the Sea Ranch area is best used by kayak fishermen. Point Arena Cove is also a great spot and many fishermen congregate around the pier for all kinds of fare (from salmon to lingcod to seaperch) but what is often underutilized is the rocky outcrops next to the pier that are very kelpy and snaggy but have deep and thin crevasses acting like a sort of little fishing hole (they look like tide pools at a glance). If you know what you are doing, you can land some monstrous rockfish (mostly grass rockfish) and cabs. Pokepoling is also a great option. the rocks near Irish Beach is another great option. There is also the Mendo Headlands, Fort Bragg, Westpoint Headlands, Bruhel Point, Shelter Cove cliffs, etc etc, just get out there and find your own spots (You know a cliff is good when it has a rope to rappel gear down safely).

I made a bunch of money off crypto these last few years and thats basically my plan. I'm not rich or anything, but I'm out of debt and have enough money to float me a few years. Any body know any good heavier jigs that still have a small hook on them ? (small being like a size 12 to 8). Like a trout magnet but with heavier weight would be perfect. I use it for vertical jigging deeper water. I have some mystery chink ones I got from an assortment kit at some point and the concept works great.

How would I go about smuggling LMB fry into my country to spice up the fresh water scene and what are ideal conditions for them? I have 2 man made lakes near me that would be perfect I think. Plenty of redfin perch and other shitty course fish to eat that were smuggled in here anyway so why not.

If you are content with quality of Catch Co stuff its fine. But they are premium priced lures I would just as soon pay for an established brand. I basically only finesse fish so all their products are way too oversized for me.

I mean finesse in fishing in general. LMB finesse lures are still ridiculously oversized, they don't accomplish much besides making sure you will catch no other species.

Ice fishing jigs are notorious for not having the hook size advertised. I could probably find some in person by visually looking at them. Most of the weights I want I can guarantee they are slapping a size 6 or size 4 hook on it.

I'm in San Diego and I've fished off both my scupper pro and my hobie outback and it is like night and day fishing off a pedal kayak. Paddle kayaks might be ok on lakes and whatnot, but trying to stay in position and facing the right direction is an enormous pita when you have to deal with currents and wind.

Does Mission Bay have a lot of current? I was looking at one for Mission and SD bays, I wasn’t going to go out to La Jolla or offshore without a small motor

Hobie pedal drive kayaks cost a fuck ton, but it's really the easiest and most efficient way when it comes to manual power. if you go powered with something like a Honda BF2.3, you have way more options. Even with the Hobies, the Revo is the best "ocean" model they make, but it's not the widest most stable kayak they make. if you are set on an affordable paddle kayak, you want something long, narrow and seaworthy just for efficiency. things like a viking profish reload, ocean kayak prowler 13/15, ocean kayak trident 13/15. the ocean kayak prowler 13 can still be found at cabelas/basspro despite being discontinued from my knowledge, but it sits low to the water and doesn't have built in storage. those are both drawbacks and benefits. it's supposedly good in wind and quite quick, efficient to paddle due to it being like that. I'm probably gonna get one. I'm sure they are a wet ride though, so it's really a summer or wetsuit kayak.

IMO I think Old Town's pedal drive is better designed than the Hobie's.

BUT, this is highly dependent on where you're fishing. Shallow waters? Hobie is best, those flappers tuck right up against the kayak, but the propeller drive on the Old Town, you gotta lift it up and out to clear shallow.

However, if fishing deep water, the Old Town's is much better. Instant reverse (just pedal backwards), the prop design is faster, etc. You cannot go wrong with either, mind you. Hobie's and Old Town's both kick ass.

You can get away with even short pedal pumps instead of going all the way, and still keep decent speed up. especially if you get the bigger fins. like I said though, the Revo13 or longer is what most offshore fishermen choose, when it comes to seriously rough waters. the wider more stable kayaks do fine if it's calm, but not when it gets bad like a slim more traditional hull shape. regardless, most people will never do regular offshore fishing unless they live in Hawaii or something, but I wouldn't want to be tired pretty far out there with a traditional paddle kayak. only seriously in shape hardcore experiences paddlers are suited for that kind of shit.

It's really not that hard. Spool tension so side to side play is gone, brakes on the middle most setting, click down on the thumb bar and keep thumb firmly on spool, go back to cast and let the rod load up, fling it forward with the rod doing most of the work and go from firmly pressing down on the spool to barely pressing down (thumb stays on the spool) and boom. Easy.

If you're letting go of the spool all together with your thumb, you're gonna have a bad time.

Flat bottomed boats can't go for extended times without being repaired and are longer when wet in colder climates, although mine is an aluminum boat that can be repaired pretty easy.

Also - Eastern Washington (Yakima, Tri-Cities etc) are better. Most mountain rivers are just glacier runoff so they're super fucking cold.

Sadly, the fishing is going to be shit for a few months at least. It's "winter" here until late April/Early May even then, summer doesn't set in until late June/Early July.

If you get a few days off in a row in the summer, make the drive to Western Montana and fish The Madison, Jefferson and Gallatin. Way better fishing.

My grandparents live in Bozeman, and you can make that drive from Seattle in about eight hours.

if i was planning to put a motor on it I'd just get a Nucanoe Pursuit from the start. if you want something for exercise, a pedal kayak is the way to go. i like pedal kayaks because you exercise without really feeling like you are, you're just having fun and exploring. once you get over the plateau and you build up some endurance, you can go pretty damn far on one. miles, just like on a bike.

Ordered a handy-pak-net. Since I am in europe I had to pay a ton of shipping because no local online store sells it. Don't really need a fishing net because I fish for mostly river trout but I am required by law to carry one and this fits into any backpack.

Idk how legit it is, but the die hard halibut guys preach that you should use a rubber or silicone mesh net because the twine ones can cut the fins and apparently halibut are prone to infection.

Good to know, I don't carry a net when I'm fishing. I'm either lipping small fish with my hand or medium fish with my plastic lipper, anything too big to handle than way is probably going in the cooler anyway. I don't fish any salmonids though.

I cartop my pro angler and routinely just lift the whole thing and launch over steep steps cut into rocks etc. I never understood the cries of pain at needing trailers etc for bigger hobies. Pair of wheels and some sneaky lifting and tilting.

I think the biggest advantage of that inflatable to my eyes would be a bar crossing, how do they fare?

How's drying out the scout? I have a coworker that recommends it. I used to have an inflatable kayak before my hobie and it was a pain in the ass to dry before refolding. If I end up moving, I'll prob sell my hobie and get a scout to save room.

Please help. I have a 12ft surfcast rod (40-60lbs, 4-10oz) and would like to pair it with a conventional reel for the purpose of sturgeon/surfcast fishing.
Finding something for surfcast is pretty straight forward but I'm running into problems deciding on a reel for bank sturgeon fishing. I'll be fishing the Columbia river from the bank for massive sturgeon (up to 10 feet). I spoke with some locals and they said I need a reel that can do the following
>holds 300-400 yards of 40-50lb mono
>cast 100+ yards

I found a reel that should do the job (pic rel)

But I'm unsure which size I should get. I often see surf fishermen using the size 15 and I believe they prefer the 15 because its easier to cast? Has anyone ever casted a large conventional reel?

i'd honestly say a daiwa sealine x50 sha is a good option. i own the x40 sha myself and its a solid reel with one hell of a freespool. if you cant cast 100 yards with a sealine x-sha and a 12 foot rod its because you're doing something wrong, not the reel. like i said penn is good and makes good stuff, but i dont have first hand experience fishing a squall. if your heart is set on squall i'd say get the SQLII40SD

Squalls have graphite frames, upgrade to the fathom which has an aluminum frame. The 25n is the go to 40# jigstick reel for yellowtail fishing on the socal sportboats. The graphite frames have been known to flex when fighting stuff that's substantial.

I'm sure it comes with a good clamp. The (alleged) flex is in the body/frame which are aluminum in the fathom. I haven't seen it myself, just stuff I stumbled upon while researching reels for myself.

If you know what kind of leader setup you want for that line I'd just nail knot/blood knot the leader to the line.
You can also weld a new loop, it's pretty easy.
There's a bunch of videos on youtube on how to do it, you just need shrink tubing and Ideally a heat gun but I've done it over an open flame or with a hair straightener. The two latter methods require a little practice though so if you have some old fly line youre not gonna use I'd practice on that

okay if you want to keep the welded loop style then cut the line off 1/4 inch up from the damage, then double an inch and a half over its self. use tying thread and a bobbin to wind around the new loop all the way back until it is just around the single strand, then back up until it is 1/2 an inch from the end of the loop. whip finish, some kind of soft or flexible head cement or resin, and you're back in business.
or, use a nail knot to tie the butt section of the leader to the line, then cut the leader off 6 inches up from there and tie a perfection loop or a double surgeons knot. i personally prefer the second method

How did you manage to break a windshield or the boat rail?
I cartop from the side, ie lay the boat down beside the car. I can’t see how you’d manage to damage anything if you position a scratch mat correctly.
For stairs, there are those 2 possible wheel points, I usually just pick the one closest to higher stairs and wheelie the wholeboat down from the upstairs end. Not sure how the weight even factors in those situations desu.

Either way for fellow kayak fans, don’t listen to the PA FUDs, I have a 12 I just straight fling on a hatchback all the time, 14 would be even easier cus of more leverage. Highers cars can be trickier etc.

Biggest risk to the huge yaks in my opinion is increased wind resistance peeling the racks off on a highway.

Been fly fishing with an Orvis Encounter for the past two months (first fly rod, got it for Christmas.) Hooked so far and I want to upgrade because I guess I like to spend money when I already have a fully functioning setup. What would be the first things to upgrade? Rod, reel, fly line? They're kinda a meme, they reduce the "twirling" you jig can get if you're using Mono and a spinning reel. I have four (13 Fishing Black Betty Free Fall, Pflueger President, a Piscifun ICX, and an Eagle Claw BE 3/4 Fly Reel), and they're OK, but I don't know that I'm going to be buying more. They don't really do anything with heavy jigs that can pull your mono straight (or if you use a swivel and leader or if you use a braid mainline), and they are kinda crap with light tackle in terms of getting precise control the the descent speed, unless they're the old fly reel style instead of the newer kind with a trigger.

Basically if you want to use cheapo mono to jig for stuff without using a swivel, get one, but you can do anything you can do with a inline you can do with a spinning reel that has a reverse lever, provided you use a swivel and leader, and spinning reels have other benefits over the inlines when it comes to line management and icing, etc. If all my ice combos went to the bottom and I had to start from scratch, I probably would get a fly reel or inline with reverse for tungsten jigging sunnies but I'd stick with spinning reels for everything else. My other inlines work well enough that I'm not gonna just trash them, but performing acceptable well compared to my fleet of Shimao AX 500 reels that were around $17 each when I bought them is not a glowing endorsement of $45-$100 inline reels.

In my view you will most likely be better served by buying a higher quality, complete outfit down the line once you know what you want. You should also have a think about where/what style of flyfishing you want to do. If your first outfit is a 7wt, maybe you really want a 5wt or vice-versa, don't lock yourself into one wt class if it is not the right fit for you. Also, keep the cheap rod as a complete outfit. There is a place for a cheap outfit if you are fishing in thick bushland, fishing bead-head nymphs , going somewhere where the rod will have to stay in your car or could get broken, or if you want a spare to take on a trip.

Rods from shimano or daiwa that are within your budget are a safe bet, 7ft fast action, medium power is a ""do it all" rod but you will be limited in what size of lures you can throw for pike. 30 (or 300 depending on company) size spinning reels are good for the listed species. I would use 20lb braid as a main line and attach a mono/fluoro leader with a swivel for walleye/trout or wire leaders for pike. I fish rivers and lakes in Canada for the same species + a few others.

Just get a Penn Pursuit IV 3000 reel since it's saltwater worthy, beefy bail, ht100 drag, and not uber expensive considering what you get. reel will be beefy enough for large fish without being as big and heavy as a dedicated big fish reel. as for rod, who knows. most people use much lighter rods for trout than they would pike. depends on what types of lures/methods you use, generally I prefer lighter action rods with 2000 size reels for stuff like that.

I dropshot flukes in the bay, but the proven methods in socal for surf are carolina rigged gulp sandworms or sandcrabs and shallow minnows/spoons. Unless it was really flat on one of the more surf breaky beaches I would think a dropshot would be tossed around too much.

So the area I wanted to go is a harbor (harbor cove beach in Ventura) that has a couple jetties. There is virtually no break and the bottom is really sandy. Ah OK so for socal thats more what we consider bay fishing. Those flukes work great for that, the other staple is a 1/4-3/8 oz jighead and a 3" paddletail for spottys. Those fish you see jumping are probably mullet and don't really bite anything aside from floating bread crumbs.

For trout I throw 1/8oz or 1/16oz spinners. I've caught brookies, browns, and rainbows with them so if the fish are biting, you should be in good shape. I don't know exactly what conditions you are fishing but spinners are pretty versitile.

I don't think color super matters. I would be happy throwing any of the colors that you posted. I have personally caught trout on all of the painter martins colors in that set. I think lure size is generally a larger factor. Spooky fish are generally more willing to hit smaller stuff.

Mainly have used sinker flies like wooly buggers that I've had most success with in the cold months, but been using more dry flies lately as it's been getting warmer in eastern NC and the tiny bluegill have been eating that up. I'm trying to go to west NC this month for trout, but trips out there won't be too often. Feels like I'm posting a blog but I know that some of things matter when choosing the right equipment.

I highly recommend this for your needs. It is high quality, been using it for 5 years. Great line & it is just as good as Rio line I have but maybe 2/3 the price ($60 is a steal plus free shipping). This will allow you to fish topwater as well as sinking, I have used this for bass fishing as well as trout fishing & gotten a ton of use out of it.

Fuck, just checked & that line is all sold out in the weight you need. Bummer too because it's great quality for $60... If you have a Cabela's near you I would call & see if they have any in stock. If not, you can always go the Rio route, but it is about twice the price of what I recommended, although you can still get a nice Rio line in the $60-$100 range.

Replying to myself as well as others just for some additional info. I mainly shore fish (though I got some waders and some boots are on the way) so roll casting is my main technique with all the shit behind me. Is there a particular line that does this best? I have a cabelas near me so will look for that line too, but it seems like a lot of places are running low on fly fishing gear because it's becoming in season.

I have Rio Singlehand Spey line in a 6 weight that is intermediate sinking, I believe they make it in a floating version as well but it is about $100+ & hard to find (I don't think it was very popular & released a couple years back). However, with a good roll cast/ spey technique it will shoot an absolute rocket with no backcast room. I routinely rip off 50+ foot roll casts as long as the fly isn't too heavy. If you can't find any of that or aren't willing to pay for it (understandable), there are plenty of other options of shooting head lines that will load very easily & shoot a ton of line out once loaded.
Anything that has a taper shape similar to pic related will work (what I use)

Not at all. Braid is much smoother casting. No line memory means that it just flies off the spool rather nicely.
