>>2305839>I'd say go for a 12+ footAbsolutely, but I'd say that fishing kayaks are the same as basic kayaks with the addition of a few attachment points for rod holders and GoPros and sometimes a gimpy organizer. If you're not going to use stuff like that, the extra cost over basic kayaks isn't worth it. Also, don't worry about a rudder, even a 12-13 foot kayak can be easily turned. It's just something else to fuck with/break that you probably won't use much.
Do get a good PFD that fits you, get one from a local retailer so you can try it on and have them fit you, ideally try it on in your boat to make sure the seat doesn't interfere with it. You'll look like a moron wearing one of those orange things that will get in your way again and again. Also, splurge on a good paddle. Even a $100 paddle is a very nice upgrade over the heavy pieces of shit they come with, use that one as your back-up paddle.
Main thing you need to decide is whether you want sit-on-top or sit-in, each has pros and cons, personally I only paddle when it's warm and prefer SOTs. They're just way easier to get in and out of. Sit-ins will keep the weather off you better. There's nothing wrong with the big brands and boats you'll find at Academy/Cabela's/Bass Pro etc., but I'd avoid stuff from Wal-Mart and similarly priced kayaks.
