Now going to sleep in sweaty clothes for starters sucks ass, but this saying comes from having a lot of bulk in a sleeping bag, thereby compressing the insulation and reducing it's ability to retain heat, so yeah crawling into a sleeping bag with your giant parka is going to likely do more harm than good if you're trying to get warm, and need to for survival reasons.
