7" Fillet knife
Swiss Army Knife
Multi-tool

I either hike or canoe/portage so weight is an issue. I don't want to haul all this around all the time.

What's /out/'s setup? one big knife for everything? do those portable string saws actually work? Do you open cans without a can opener?

I switch the hatchet for a 8" folding saw because sometimes I have to cut things while in the boat and it's a little more stable than hacking away with a hatchet. I use the 5" fixed for filleting but it's not ideal. When I've gone with my GF or Brother I like to give them the hatchet as it makes quick portage paths through the bush.

fillet knife is nice but, you should be able to get it done with your 4" general purpose knife in a pinch. I'd ditch it unless you are going to be processing a ton of fish.

no, they suck. I have a pruning saw and it doesn't weigh much but, I don't take it that much. there is generally so much deadfall that it's not an issue. pretty much only for cutting dead standing in winter or wet months.

SAK or p-38 but, I don't really carry cans with me unless I already have to pack my water in.

no. 3"-6" depending on feels that day and large 11" knife (only 17oz so not too bad) to use as a combo machete/hatchet. I don't carry the big one much unless I know that I will need it to clear brush for camp or baton wet wood.

I used to carry a Leatherman but ditched it as I never found a use for it innawoods. it was mostly redundant with my SAK. if fishing, I just take a hemostat anyway.

Otherwise, it depends on what you do, but Swiss army knives and multitools are hardly ever useful /out/; unless you're fishing or riding a bike or something, all those screwdrivers and pliers can stay home.

My own setup consists of a large knife with a 9 inch blade, and a small folder with a non-locking blade. With that, scissors, nail cutters with a file, and tweezers in first aid kit. For hiking even in remote areas, this is well enough for me, large knife cuts wood and small knife cuts slices of sausage.

if you need to open a can without a can opener, you can easily do it with a knife. i have done it, but it possible that it will chip the tip of your knife off so dont do it if you value your knife. but like the other anon said, i very rarely bring cans. occasionally ill bring a can of hash, or chilly, or something similar if i can spice it up and make it last longer with other ingredients.

Machete for chopping down firewood and shaving off kindling, and a little 4" folder for various tasks like nail cleaning and cutting food (not in that order), but I carry a pocket knife all the time anyways and have never really needed a knife innawoods except for if I shoot a rabbit or something and need to skin it

Same here, I once tried that wondering if it would work. Well it does.

String saws are quite good actually, but just no efficient enough, and far too weak, they'll break after a couple uses and can't be repaired. A real chainsaw is indeed much better.

Ol' John Henry was a steel drin' man, but he couldn't beat the steam drill.

And a para cord chain saw can't beat the Sven Saw, too much curf (the width of cut).

Wider cut = more to cut. The Sven Saw blade is very thin, less to cut.

The "tug of war" of a chain saw will give you a great upper body work out for your traps, lats and tris, though.

I've done it. Sven Saw win. Pic related.

For ultra lightweight backpacking ill scratch a few cayenne peppers before heading out, that way I've got my spices ready to go and weight evenly distributed amongst my fingers, plus I save .023 grams from not putting them in a bag.

I got the joke myself. I chuckled.

This is so close from the kind of silly things UL backpackers do that it may pass as being real. After all, there are people who reuse the water they used to boil their pasta to make some tea, and use the rest as a mouth wash.
