The question with gear is "Why?" What does a fanny pack offer that larger packs do not. I'd say accessibility if worn in front, and small item storage for anything that you will use often enough that stopping and pulling it out of your sack is not an option. (Sun glasses, bear spray, medication, knife, spare lighter, nav gear, snacks)
The added benefit is if you don't make them look like batmans fucking utility belt is they are grayman approved. You can carry a few gear choices that would stand out, into public locations and it wouldn't stand out. My personal goal is to have my EDC and hiking gear be universal, but not make me look like a lost hunter or a citiot.
