/out/ tell me how to find morels. I spent the last 2 springs wandering the woods and could not find any. Tell me your secrets.

Wandering around scanning all over the ground might work eventually, but the method that's worked best for me is looking for recently dead trees that haven't lost all their bark yet. Sometimes you don't find anything around the dead trees, other times you can find 30 in a 10 foot radius. You can also find big patches of them growing with no dead trees nearby. If you do find a patch keep going back to it, the mycelium stays underground so as long as you don't totally wreck the area they'll keep coming up there. They seem to like slightly disturbed ground too, deer trails and shit.

Part of why morels are so expensive even compared to most other wild mushrooms (ie non truffles) is that they are quite finicky and need a lot of nutrients. What that means is that if some pop up somewhere and are harvested even a little too much or even not harvested but didn't get enough feed that's it. As for finding new patches I don't have much advice any other mushroom book will give you. Scour any promising areas frequently to look for signs. My adice though is if you do find some don't fucking pick them this year. Obscure the patch as best you can to dissuade other forragers and fertilize the spot. Next year you can probably harvest a couple, but most important fertilize. The goal is to grow it into a decent patch where once a year you can get a nice crop and leave it vigorous enough to do the same in years to come.srymv

I found an old abandoned farm last year that struck me as a great morel spot. It's part fields filled with persimmons, black walnut and a few black locusts and part forest mostly tulip poplar and some oak and hickory. There's also a handful of apple trees scattered about. I've only found morels a few times so I'm not too experienced, but this place just struck me as a good spot, is it?

I have definitely read that abandoned orchards/farms are good places to find morels. Regardless of whether you're fishing for (You)s, congrats on the nice spot, it sounds pretty choice. Just don't go telling everyone about it and you should be good to go this spring.

Morels are the fruiting bodies of a mycorrhizal fungus. They live in symbiotic relationships with specific tree species. Live off the sugars from the tree's roots, and only fruit heavily when their partner is dying.
If you want a steady supply, I suggest inoculating your own trees. I'm currently experimenting with rooting and inoculating apple cuttings at the same time. Otherwise, harvest some and chuck them in a blender with water. Pour the slurry at the base of an existing tree, and repeat every season until it takes.
I think I've seen them wild at the base of a spruce.

Another good local mycorrhiza is the golden chanterelles. May want to look into identifying and propagating those too.

After a winter with heavy snowfall, go out west to where there has been a forest fire in fir/spruce forest within the past year or two. About 3 weeks after snowmelt, the black fire morels will pop in numbers you have never imagined even in your dreams. I once gathered 120 lbs in a single day on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Lived for 11 years in east Tennessee with an old apple orchard nearby. Abundant morels every spring. Carry your haul in a mesh bag so the spores can travel.
