I went on a camping trip and there were buildings where I was planning to sleep. If you're going to a known area then you're good to go, and how hard is it to update you map with a marker?
Don't forget to gauge your pacing, walk beside telephone pole and count the pace of one foot. That distance is roughly 50m, double the number for you 100m pace. Next, walk another telephone pole in waist high brush, count your paces again. Last walk through thick brush and count your paces.
This way you will always be able to tell what distance you're walking.
