Didn´t find one, so I decided to bake one myself.

Can you make fatwood using Bioethanol? Like drenching wood in Bioethanol for about 2 weeks, then letting it dry?

I might be wrong, but wouldn't the alcohol evaporate?
But I know you can make it with stuff that liquefies when heated and solidifies when it cools (e.g.: pine pitch, wax, etc.)

Any recommendations for a solid powerbank, preferably one that has solar charging and can handle the woods. Price isnt an issue, and it doesnt need gimmicky stuff like a compass and flashlight.

fatwood is just wood with tree resin in larger amounts in it
the resin plus wood burns good
so if you have wood, you just need to soak it in wood resin(not toxic swamp/plastic resins if that helps)

Which will still remain ice cold in ~24 hours? Provided I keep it in favorable conditions.

I like cooking and the places I usually camp in are only accessible by foot, and usually takes ~3 hours of hiking.
There are some places which takes a bit more and I want to go there, but the thought of carrying pic related for more than 3 hours makes me want to kill myself.

Inaulated cooler bags do exist. Can also wrap a normal waterproof bag, like a trash bag, with a towel. As long as it isn't too hot that works pretty well.

When I decided to get into camping I imagined it as being a way to escape from civilisation and spend some time alone out in the wilderness.
But now that I've gone a few times, it feels more like sleeping in a grass carpark with tons of other people nearby. I've even gone to what I thought were fairly unheard-of campsites, but I was still in closer proximity to other people than I would be at home, with more noise from parties and far less privacy.

Does it ever get better? I have a fucked ankle, so I can't realistically do overnight backpacking and am limited to sites with road access. Would I need a 4WD or adventure bike to get to the more secluded campsites, or are they always packed too?

Looks like an unripe persimmon kind of but they're not thorny trees and usually have a few rather large seeds in the center. Some kind of guava maybe? Though other than the pineapple guava they wouldn't generally be in NE Florida since they are tropicals but who knows with springs and microclimates. I'm working on a product for /out/ings.

It's basically a box the size and weight of a small battery bank. It tracks (very accurately) GPS, altitude (barometric pressure), temp, humidity. It lasts 30 days + on one charge depending on how often you put GPS into standby.

There is a phone app that displays what you record on a timeline so you can scrub through gps location over time with associated data like altitude etc. The intention if for you to be able to save clips from the timeline and name them whatever you want to look back at later. The box also has two buttons on it and lets you put a flag in the timeline that you can add notes to in the app later. I don't want to have the app be paid or have ads or any shit in it. Just straightforward and easy to use.

What do you fellow /out/doorsmen think? It's nothing revolutionary but I don't think there's anything exactly like it out there, especially considering its battery life and standalone operation. It's like a blackbox for outdoors shit. I forgot to mention it's submersible/totally waterproof, at least to IP68 standards.

Inside I'll also store solid blocks of ice inside pet bottles, the meat will also be frozen solid.
The ice box I've been using in a similar manner (in the winter at least) was able to keep meat frozen for almost 2 days.

I like the mechanix fastfit gloves.
Some might say larp, but they are cheap, convenient, comfy and pretty damn sturdy. They go down to about 0C comfortably I'd say
Normal model is just 16$.

I like them so much, I was considering geting the 'material4x' version, which has leather for extra durability. Good choice for doing work, probably not great for hiking.

you are describing different ends of a spectrum in both performance and cost. WM bags are some of the nicest downs bag. They are well-made and generously rated, and have a number of different options available. Most mil-surp bags i've experienced are heavy, polyester-fill bags designed to be brutalized, uncleaned, and minimally performing in regards to warmth. Do you have any experience camping? For my fellow hikers with big feet and/or tendency to sweat heavily, where do you find cheap plus-size socks that don't crumble in a few months like the walmart multi-packs?
I'm assuming there's a magic number in those blends of fibers these days so that my feet aren't fucking drenched even when it's a moderate temp out.
As much as I hate the plastic microfiber industry I am willing to cope if they're just for when I go on serious treks.

depends on slope angle and snow conditions. if its soft and you can post your way through then you wouldnt need anything. harder and more ice on higher angle is when you would want something. remember also there are different levels of equipment, there are microspikes and then proper crampons. the latter require a stiff soled boot like a mountaineering or snowboard boot and are for actual alpine ice. the former go on regular shoes and are more for when theres ice on the trail and you just want traction, not to prevent a fall

second, yes to get out of crowded designated campgrounds you will need to either stick to weekdays or live near public lands with dispersed camping. lots of those roads are accessible without 4x4 but that obv gives you more options and lets you go further. there are also lots of places that have designated car camping sites that arent all together in one campground.

I just want a 2-person tent that doesn't cost a fortune and will keep me comfy year-round in the UK. It doesn't have to be light. I'll only be using it at normie campsites to go climbing or surfing for cheaper so I'll just be grabbing it out of the car and pitching it there. Preferably not a complete pain to put up.

French F1 tent. The green one. The beige one isn´t waterproof.
So far I had no problem, besides some condensation, but I had the side-vents closed.
There´s some YT videos about it. It´s like 30-60€ depending on where you get it. (EU)
Pitching is easy and quick.

I'm looking to replace my antique GPS (picrel). I mostly use it to stay oriented while day hiking or backpacking. I previously tried a Garmin Foretrex 401 and it's nice but the battery life isn't very good. The new Foretrex model has much better battery life. But I'm also wondering about a plain eTrex 10 or one of the models with maps or one of the models with satellite messaging. Thoughts? What do you use?

So I’m about to take a couple friends on their first real camping trip that requires hiking to a spot. They’re not hikers or campers (yet). It sounds like you are doing everything right. Mostly just make sure there is enough food and make sure they aren't missing any essentials. And make sure their packs are a reasonable weight, it's easy to get carried away and take too much stuff.

The Pedialyte powder is good. However it does contain sugar. I've been making my own electrolyte mix with potassium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate. It works. Also try "lite salt", which is available from the grocery story and has a mix of sodium and potassium.

I bought a tarp and it has D-rings at 1/3 and 2/3 along the length, but not in the middle.

I have purchased two tents in that price range. One worked oddly well. I kept it until I wanted something lighter. The other one lasted one camping trip and I threw it away. It actually kept me dry but I could tell it wouldn't hold up to any significant weather.

I love the French F(rog)1 tent. I bought mine from Varusteleka and it was unused condition. I think I paid 35€ for it. The only problem is with the tent pegs being almost half the weight of the tent. I am not an expert at navigation but I can say I've never seen anyone use a map case. Ziploc baggies or diy lamination, yes. I'm sure it could be useful if light and waterproof. But first try sticking your map in a gallon ziploc baggie and see if that works for you.

sleeping bag is like a giant body sock, with insulation and soft material, but your head is still exposed to the outdoors. a bivy is like a very small tent, just for sleeping an for 1 person usually, it has a frame to keep it erected and it covers your whole body. but one does not exclude the other, bivy is for coverage, sleeping bag is for keeping you warm, and still you need and insulator between the sleeping bag and the floor

I'm a poorfag that got in to hammock camping last year.
I don't have an underquilt, nor the money to buy one.
Last year i tried to use a foam pad to keep warm. it kinda worked, but was not really comfortable.
I've got an old sleeping bag i'm not using anymore. Nothing special, rated to 11 °C/ 51.8 °F.
I thought about modifying the bag into an underquilt.
Cutting the head part a little and slitting the bottom part lengthwise. the zipper ist only 2/3 of the length. Sew everything up and add some loops to attach to my hammock.
I am quite handy with sewing and think i just try my luck.
Anybody ever tried something similar?

I’m not familiar with those models, but tents fall into two categories: 3 season and 4 season. 4 season tents can handle moderate or heavy snow loads, while 3 season tents will collapse. That’s really the only major difference. Sometimes 4 season tents go all out and have super thick material that’s more wind resistant and less ventilation, but these are specialty mountaineering options. Temperatures aren’t really a factor. If it’s -30c in a windless desert you could use a tarp.

My biggest fear is condensation during colder season(which happened majorly to a random tent I borrowed), and being too warm during summer season, but I guess the last thing is more dependent on the sleeping bag. The reason I like the Jerven tarp is that its incredibly versatile and can be set up and taken down fairly quickly. The only negative being lack of space. Because a 1 man tent might not be big enough for your needs. Most people who get 1 man tents at first, end up buying another tent when they realize how claustrophobic 1 man tents are.
It has happened to me and to several people I know.
Imagine it's raining and you're changing your wet clothes inside of the thing.
Can you even sit in that without hunching over? that tent is 91cm tall on it's peak.
It also has only 1 vestibule doesn't it? You store your backpack and shoes there, but where are you gonna cook?

Backpacking can fall into two broad categories; hiking so you can camp, and camping so you can hike. The former is more heavily focused on camping, while the later is focused on hiking.

When I’m doing longer hikes, I’m only camping so I can rest and hike more the next day. That’s camping as a necessity to hike. I don’t bother with a fire in those trips. But when I’m just spending a night in the woods to soak up the ambiance and relax, you bet your ass I’m building a campfire.

Any anons got a recommendation or two for a tarp that's cheap, durable, but not insanely heavy for anything more than an overnighter, such as the canvas one I'm ditching? I need to replace the old one because the screen is failing and it hasn't received firmware updates in a decade or more. Anyway in my philosophy GPS isn't a replacement or even a backup to map navigation. Being able to mark a waypoint and get back to it is simply a method to avoid becoming lost in the first place. The main reason I am considering getting a model with mapping is so it can serve as a backup to the literal map itself, like if it becomes lost or damaged. Lol mine is from like 1999, the date integer overflowed a long time ago and the screen glitches sometimes obscure important stuff like coordinates or waypoint names. And new units have something like 30+ dB more sensitivity, which might be nice. Maps can fail just like anything else. Normally due to human error but we are all subject to human error, so it's nice to have some kind of backup.

I got a midori 2, even for solo, but then again the old version only had 1 vestibule.
It's nice to be able to keep your gear inside when it is a fucking shitshow outside. Though putting it in a garbage bag under the vestibule is aight.
Plus, I've since entered a relationship and didn't have to buy a whole new tent.

I've had mine for 11 years, it's going strong. Best $150CAD I've ever spent.
The included pegs suck though.

Wash it off after every trip and let it dry completely before storing, it'll last you a long ass time.

It's not like you're using a washing machine, but DWR will wear off quickly anyway. You reapply yearly.

At the very least you need to sweep it out/shake it out and hang it up after a trip... But I hose it off, soap + sponge on sap or dirt stains, toothbrush the zippers if you camped in sandy area, then in the summer months when there's some sun, I'll apply Nikwax DWR + UV to the fly and the floor+bathtub sides while the tent is still wet, let it sit a bit and then sponge it around a bit and let try.
Do the same to your backpack's rainfly. Also good to clean off your pegs, scrub your stuff sacks, soak your backpack with water+vinegar then rinse and hang up to dry.

Like a car, there's an actual reason to wash it regardless of aesthetics. Dirt, sap, animal shit, bug guts, sand, whatever else will degrade your tent fabric over time.
Not washing it is weirder to me.

Nikon has some decent ones that don't break the bank, Bushnell seems to have decent price to performace ratio. Asking that advice online is a bit risky tho, at least for me some just are comfortable to use and some aren't and price rarely has anything to do with that. Depends how tall you are, general rule of thumb for a "forest axe" (big enough to be useful but not to huge to lug around) is simple: wrap your palm around the head of the axe, over the eye, the end of the handle should just fit under your armpit when your hand is raised to the side. That is a rule of thumb tho so bit more or bit less is ok if it feels ok to handle.

I've used the sterno type before.
One i left a can open and when I looked at it a week later it had dried up into a little chunk of soap-like disk.

I use them for when I'm fixing barbwire fences.
They will get torn up bc barbwire is sharp but each pair is under 2 bucks.
so its better that ruining a 16$ pair of gloves. My hiking gloves are for pushing through thorns and hot surfaces.

I've never been to any store that sells them, but I did get a sherpa wool coat as a gift that looks about the same as the one in your pic. Can't recommend them enough, very high quality, I've had it for at least five years and it's still going strong. Probably my favorite coat I own.

I asked this question earlier in this thread... I am currently trialing a 22x. At this time it's been running about 24 hours on a pair of AAs and it's still going. I am amazed at how fast it gets a GPS lock compared to my old unit. The screen resolution is too low for serious map use but it can serve as a backup and it can also do things like "take me to the nearest (gas station / food / hospital)" which is kind of nice. The main disadvantage compared to the black and white units is that the screen turns off in battery save mode.
Why do you want a 32x? I haven't found the Garmin compass feature to ever be worth it. I always turn it off. And the altimeter is only needed if you want to know your glide ratio. Although the 22x is a stupid shade of blue-green so I guess that's a factor.

Well theres no real reason honestly, just figured 3 more sensors for $50 couldn't hurt. Not as much for the individual readings but more the chance that it would help with overall accuracy, although I really don’t know a lot about gps systems so that may be irrelevant….

Well I haven't tried the 32x specifically but I have tried another unit with a barometer and a previous-generation compass. The barometer might be useful in some situations where you're moving fast and really care about elevation changes (flying, maybe bicycling) but for me I don't see an advantage for hiking. The previous-generation compass had poor consistency and was annoying to work with. The basic Garmin compass-free navigation mode has a learning curve that can confuse newbies but once you're used to it, it is extremely intuitive and easy. The newer 3-axis compass *might* be better but I'm not sure. In either case you should carry a real compass too.
For me, GPS or cell phone mapping is at best a backup to a paper map. For that I think the 22x will be adequate. Mapping is not the strong point of GPS. Use it like a classic map-free GPS: Mark the trailhead, campsite, landmarks, etc. as waypoints. If you can spare the battery, you can also keep it on and let it log your route. Practice using it to get back to a waypoint (geocaching is good for this). This can absolutely prevent you from getting lost and save your ass from spending an unplanned night or two outside with just your survival kit. Battery life is paramount, it needs to last long enough to get you back to your car even if you're injured or in inclement conditions. Study the device's power saving modes, carry extra batteries, and turn it off when it's not needed. Also FYI the more basic models normally have better battery life.

Update. My eTrex 22x ran 37 hours and 47 minutes on one pair of 2500 mAh AA batteries. The screen was set to turn off when not in use. The GPS chip was NOT in power save mode and had WAAS and GLONASS turned on. Like the old units it can still turn on again after letting the dead batteries rest for a while. Impressive.

Well my drysuit is done. It's super old and has had 3 owners before me but I got it for free and it has served me well for the last couple of years. Finally shipped it in to see if they could fix some leaky seams and they sent it back saying it would be cheaper to buy a new one. Sad. I figure out vets would know. I spent a week working out on the yorkshire moors. A few days after I got back I started feeling weak, with lower back and elbow pain, headaches and feeling cold a lot. I'm also sleeping a lot during the day which I never normally do, I'm not someone who can take naps even with a hangover. I've not found a rash though so I'm not sure. Every day but the first I was wearing 2 layers of long trousers, about 7 layers up top etc.

I'm on the West coast. I have maps. I carry maps. I have average classic land nav skills. I have some decent accomplishments under my belt including detailed pen-and-paper mapping of private roads, difficult deer trails, and unsanctioned trails in harsh terrain without using GPS. I used to train folks on navigation, both with and without map and compass. You couldn't know this because I only talked about GPS. Which isn't related.
If you ride in a plane equipped with ILS, do you take a dump in the cabin and accuse the pilots of not knowing how to read a chart?

Aircraft use inetial navigation dude. GPS with WAAS is secondary. I would absolutely shit on a "pilot" who didn't know this.

I won't bother dick measuring but my navigation history is also quite extensive and includes aviation and maritime. You can nav however you like but most of these phone tards need to learn to read a map.

Saying shit like this is why I'm giving you a hard time. If your GPS gives you a grid, and you have the correct map, you're literally nolonger lost. You can't be all that great at navigation if you get lost in the first place. The only reason to use a waypoint is maritime for finding your crab pots or if the fog rolls in. I only ever used them on land for pre planned targets. Dead reconing is stupid, which waypoints obligate.

Then it gives you the bearing and range to each waypoint. That's it. Nothing more. It's that simple. All other features are simply straightforward automations and abstractions built on that functionality. It's so simple that by comparison your process of plotting coordinates on a map is almost a Rube Goldberg level of complexity.
It's just a coincidence that you can plot waypoints on a map (since they are both based on projections of the surface of the same planet). The false association you have between GPS and mapping was invented by certain people who want you to think it's complicated so they can sell (((apps))) and (((algorithms))). They claim to make life easier but the more you buy into them, the more complex things get and somehow your freedom slowly fades away. You are right to feel aversion to those things but you are misplacing the blame. Just plot your point(s), then put the thing in your backpack until and unless you choose to consult it. Unlike an (((app))) it will never tell you what to do or how to do it, nor will it purport to do your thinking for you beyond relieving you of some tedious calculations and record keeping.
It's a great technology. Not even a map gives you this level of freedom. Unless you make your own, maps are full of censorship and manipulation just like everything else. Embrace the waypoint.

There used to be a great online resource that explained how to use a GPS in the way that I described but sadly it looks like the website is gone. Perhaps I should take the time to properly document this stuff instead of having an assburgers attack on 4chan. I'll put it on my to-do list but I've got 6-12 months worth of other shit I need to do first.

Maybe I'm biased since I have been orienteering since I was a kid, but having a paper map and a compass is worlds better than having a satellite navigation if you bother to look at the map and see where you are every half an hour or so.

I am not at home atm, and don't remember. I just bought the tightest ones that weren't constictive. They were like 12USD and I got them from a local outdoor store known to carry medium to high quality gear.
