I too have really come to appreciate the humble gumboot for outdoor adventures. Just the other day I was exploring a new (to me) trail and ran into a couple washouts and some completely flooded areas. The boots kept me 100% dry and clean. There's only two downsides I've noticed. One, is they're harder on my bad knee until I get warmed up after the first 2 or 3 kilometers. Second is they're not as flexible so it's not as easy to use small or oddly shaped footholds when going up and down rocky or rootbound slopes.
