I've been planning to do a extended cross country trip in a vw vanagon, but it needs a lot of work to get it ready. By extended I'm talking 6 months or more.

I've toyed with the idea of just picking up a used bike most likely a dual sport and just tent camping. I'm curious if others had done a long extended road trip on a bike before and if so would you do it again?

I'm looking at the bike option, because it would be a much cheaper option for travel due to the price of gas, but I'm skeptical of tent camping for that amount of time.

In the past I've car camped for roughly 3 months, but a car is a bit more shelter than the motorcycle and tent.
