Not as good as logging (although logging is super vulnerable to economic downturns), worse base wage and work/life balance but comparable or slightly worse total yearly compensation compared to being a groundsman with a tree service. Of course you do a lot better once you can climb but that takes a bit, and arguably it doesn't qualify as "forestry" anyway. Same with e.g. Cal Fire. Really, though, if you specifically want to be a forester, like an RPF, all of this stuff is just a way to work in the woods before you get the degree you are, in fact, gonna need eventually.
DoD veg management might be a place to look, I always hear their fire guys do pretty well. IDK much about it though.
