Yes. In the last three days I've replaced all my lost or fucked up stuff, relined four reels, and consolidated three tackle boxes down to one and it's super organized. I only target a few species of fish and I live inland. With one stuffy tackle box and two different sized poles I can catch just about anything in my state.

I think they're getting it weighed for a state record and assume not keep it alive to make it easier for transport. In order for it to be officially recorded as a record it has to be weighed on scales approved by the county auditor. As far as I know only one fish has actually been kept alive through the whole process and that was the 92 pound state record blue cat from 2009 I think. Guy kept it alive the whole time and stocked it into his personal pond. Last time it surfaced was last year so the old guys probably still swimming around in there. Plus that "news source" is notorious for captioning whatever they want. My fiancee was in there once for a missing persons report and they shit the bed so bad on the details that we had to threaten to sue them for them to take the shit down. I'm pretty sure they just captioned it tasty eating because they just thought that was the funny thing to say.

Just dumb little stuff like people stealing your spot, I just walk away. One time I was surf fishing at night and at some point some guy casted over me to let a couple rods soak. I ended up tangling and reeling in a country mile of his line. I just got my rig un tangled and ran like hell of f the beach into the night.

I have a Plano 3700XL. And then the smaller 3500 (for offshore and sport boats) and then a smaller Plano bag for the beach and the Yak.

The XL is massive to lug around. Lugging all those torpedos and 300gram nomads are just too damn heavy lol

One time I was trying to fish a small pond along a small river, some guy came in and setup 5 rods which basically took up the entire fishable area fishing with live minnows. He proceeded to pull out a ton of juvinile largemouth and kept every single one, there might've been one that was actually legally a keeper. Totally fucking this pond. He also completely ignored everyone saying hello or asking how the fishing was going, just wouldn't say a word back to them. I regret not calling the DNR or saying something about it to him. Guess the ethnicity.
I don't fish there anymore, it's a small town park full of trash that people usually just go to smoke weed in their cars.

How do you find the time to fish if you're doing the 5 day workweek thing?
All the good fishing spots for my state are about 2 hours drive minimum. I'm seriously debating quitting my job just to fish for like a month.

I'm a beginner fisher so I"m scared to commiting a drive that far if I don't know alot about what I'm doing. I also usually have some chores to do and groceries for a family member.
Also my job is labor so I'm usually dead most of friday and even parts o saturday morning sometimes.

Caught this one on the first cast using a Texas rig with a 5" Berkley gulp grub in the salmon red color. Casted as far as I could, let it hit bottom, then slow retrieved back, felt a tap, waited a second, then felt my rod tip going down so I set the hook. It was a pretty good fight, I was maybe 20' above the water on the rocks so I had to flip it onto a rock below me , then bring up the line by hand.

Smallmouth tastes just fine even if alot of people dont want to admit it. Mild flavour, firm, white flesh. I like to bread or batter it then deep fry, or smoke/bake it and crumble it up and use it for fish cakes. Just like any other fish the cleaner the water you pull it from the better.

M8, you're right next to Illinois, a catfishing haven. Take the ferry up into Grafton IL and follow the road north aways along the Illinois river, literally fish along the bank of any of those areas and you will not struggle to get catfish. I don't even have a boat, and last time I went fishing in the Illinois River I caught enough cats to feed a family of five, with leftovers.

I do every single form of freshwater fishing besides centerpin fishing for salmonids. Fly fishing, bar none, is the funnest by far. Catching dinks on a 3 weight is fun as fuck.

I just picked up fishing in October with a basic spinning rod I use for panfish and bass, got a fly fishing rod for Christmas from my father in law who's been fly fishing his whole life and I didn't touch my spinning rod for months. I alternate a bit now but it's super fun throwing a dry fly and watching the fish come up to the surface to observe it then snatch it right from the top of the water, even if the fish is a 3" long bluegill.

Went out fishing again today. River level is down to where I can get to my regular spots, but the current is still way too fast and full of debris. City pond did nothing for me catfish wise. I did get a big hit on a rooster tail on my small tackle pole. But that was it, he just took a big bite and spat it out. Still a fun day, can't wait until that rivers down a little.

funny you ask that. I just came back from fishing. Today I was running this kentucky rig one 50 pound monofilament. I got some smaller hooks on there than I usually do, just trying to figure out what's biting where I'm at. The sinker is also much closer to that lower hook than I usually run it, I've just fished at like four different places today and each time I cut the bank sinker off and tied an appropriate one on for the current. Got my first bite of the year like an hour ago. Big strong hit, then spat it out just as I was going to reel down. Shovelheads are notorious for picking up and spitting out bait. I was on the edge of my seat the rest of the twenty minutes I was there hoping he'd double back and take it again. I've finally found the good place in my area I think.

Ive never tried the kentucky rig, might change that next weekend. In my area we only have channeI cats though, not sure if that makes a difference. I always stick with the slip sinker rig (pictured) or I add a cigar float and do a santee cooper.

I don't think I've ever had a bass hit chicken liver. I use big big circle hooks for catfishing, not many bass and other fish can really get their mouthes around the whole hook and bait in one gulp. I do have a big problem with feeder fish slowly feeding away at my bait until it's all gone. The fish I accidentally hook into the most is long nose gar. They have an occasional interest in chicken liver.

I believe so, I basically only use chicken or beef liver. Im sure other baits work but thats what i've had luck with in the past so I dont see a reason to change it. But the times that i've tried worms I just reeled in empty hooks.

an unfortunate part of fishing. choosing the right hooks for each job can limit the possibility of things like eye hooks and gut hooks, but it still happens. consider crushing or filing off the barbs. that way when it happens, it comes out easy. a barb through the eye or guy is no bueno. i always stop fishing for the day when it happens, i only fish to enjoy the outdoors.

Went out on the San Diego yesterday with a super light load of 8 people, no sign of yellows, but I got a barely legal lingcod, one nice red, a few smaller starrys, two boccaccio and a small whitefish for some ceviche tonight. On one of the drifts we got a grip of nice reds, the guy next to me pulled up an absolute toad red, had to be 7 or 8 pounds.

Without telling too much, she was reported falsely as a missing person by an insane family member of hers. some number 6 hooks, a bobber, and some worms. That's what i got last year for my first time ever fishing and caught 3 little panfish with that setup. I hooked a giant large mouth but it snapped the line so if you are worried about that you could buy some higher test line to swap with whatever comes with your rod.

I copped an 8.5 for for $300 used. I saw the same model listed for half the price a month later. Ideally I would have gotten a 10-12ft cause mine can't track for shit but it was all I could manage to store. There's always a healthy used market for kayaks cause it's one of the first things people let go of when moving or downsizing. For your first boat I really wouldn't spend more that $500. If you can afford a pedal kayak, I would go for that over motorized but those tend to be in the $1.5k-$2.5k price range.

you need to decide if you want to paddle or use a motor on a kayak. most fishing kayaks are wide and paddle like shit compared to other kayaks. generally, you want a kayak 30 inches wide or narrower for good paddling, most fishing kayaks are like 34 inches wide. you want a square transom kayak with a good weight capacity if planning to put a trolling motor on it, those are usually wide and more expensive. something like a Nucanoe Pursuit is a great kayak for putting a motor on, but it's big and expensive. if you want something narrow and short, that is a good paddling fishing kayak, look at the Crescent Ultra Lite for example. It doesn't have a big weight capacity though, so it's more for lighter weight paddlers. you have to do tons of research, lots of kayaks are overpriced as fuck, rarely are they underpriced for what you get. I'd say Crescent Kayaks have respectable prices due to all the gear tracks you get, and the quality, but they also don't offer anywhere near the lineup variety other companies offer, and they are still around $1000.

The fish around me usually short strike in cold water so I always use a stinger hook with soft plastics. I dont use spinners but I'd assume that as long as the spinner has a hook at the tail end you'd be fine.

You don't need an app, just print out the annual solunary calendar. It is just a guide anyway as weather, pressure, water level, water quality, clarity etc... will also affect the fish behavior and feeding.
You have to learn your fishing water, no apps can help you in that.

People say high barometric pressure and cold fronts are bad for fishing. I live in ohio and all we have is high barometric pressure and cold fronts, but the fish still bite fine. I look at all the factors but so far the only thing I've found is that very high or very low baro pressure is bad for fishing in general (at least in NC.) For everything else, it seems completely random whether the fish are biting or not. I'm not keeping a hard journal of the conditions and what I caught, just looking at current weather conditions from the nearby airport and keeping a general idea of what it is. The larger effect on my fishing is just finding spots and learning more about where the fish tend to hang out.

Follow-up question, are the castable sonars actually decent? I've had my eyes on a garmin sonar that hooks up to your phone wirelessly and garmin tends to make decent products, just trying to figure out if that's a gimmick as well.

I have never heard of anyone using castable sonars. Sonars are used a lot by boat anglers who fish large bodies of water so they can find dropoffs easier but fishing from the bank you should be able to figure it out on your own.

Was trout fishing in a runoff from a dam.
First i hit the trout, then a second or two later it just got a lot heavier, like i snagged a floating branch.

See that a pike has taken my little trout from the side, so it was not hooked.
Stunned i fumble getting my net off my belt.
The pike is doing a few laps around in the meantime.
After 2 laps my nets free, and i get them both in.
Fucker stared me in the eyes while holding the trout in its mouth.

For me it's to catch a vermilion rockfish from shore, a cabazon that breaks 20" from from shore, and a Lingcod that breaks 30" from shore. To do this I have started using swimbaits and started fishing spots with less pressure. Also want to catch +100 fish this year, so far I'm at 20, not sure if I'll get to 100 because since switching to swimbaits I have caught less fish but better quality fish, I haven't caught a single dink this year

Gave myself a goal to catch 1000 fish, currently sitting at 523 since I found a few spots to take my kayak out in the everglades and reel in peacock bass and Oscars every other cast. Definitely want to do some fly fishing on the flats in Islamorada sice I live close enough for it to be a day trip.

I have no idea how the fish percieve it but my experience is that when nothing else worked, and I mean Rapalas in various colors and patterns, all my spinners silver and neon, I threw in the copper spoon and it was like a feeding frenzy, 3 pikes one after the other. After the third one the splashing scared off the fishes in the area.
It must be similar to the color of blood, injury, open wounds etc...

also you can catch any combination of qualifying fish for the masters angler pin. It could be four channel cats or it could be a channel cat, two gar, and freshwater drum. In my area I can reliably hook into big old channel catfish well over 26 inches. For some reason, in this river, channel catfish grow as big as some blue cats and shovelheads. A 26 inch channel catfish is not unheard of here, and honestly not even a surprising catch. I need to go on odnr's website and see how to specifically record and send in my info and pictures for these fish because I could probably get that pin in a month or two of hard fishing.

My suggestion for buying things at walmart is finding the cheapest jig head or generic spinner that rings up as "fishing lure" on self checkout then scan that instead of the whatever expensive lure you want.

Also buy any mepps spinner with squirrel tail hair

What are some good bass lures/flies to use on a 5wt fly fishing setup? Found a small pond in my neighborhood that nobody else fishes at (there's a bigger pond near the main entry point of the neighborhood that I see people fishing all the time) and I tried it out yesterday snagging bluegill every other cast on dry flies. Water is kinda muddy and hard to see through but I did spot some surprisingly large bass. Today I was trying to use some frog poppers, got one bass to follow but it ended up swimming underneath and away from it. Also tried some larger brown/black wooly buggers but only got more bluegill. I'm pretty new to fly fishing so my sense of feeling bites and setting the hook with streamers is pretty shit (I usually hook fish while rapidly stripping) so maybe getting bites without realizing. There's tons of frogs coming out right now so I figured that would be their main food source. Pic is a little fatty I got yesterday on the first cast there, just seeing if fish actually lived there since it's a man made pond.
