Lighter than normal hiking shoes.

None that i can discern. I've been down that rabbit hole and i end up just using hiking shoes. Approach shoes aren't great for either for hiking or climbing, so there's not much point. Wherever i would want to climb, I'd use real climbing shoes anyway because footwork is so crucial.
As far as hikers, Xero shoes are my favorite, but they're very soft which can leave your foot bruised in rocky terrain, so i added a rock stop (thin piece of plastic midsole) and presto they're fucking awesome.

Not all brands are created equal. La Sportiva or Black Diamond make waterproof brands.

They do have softer rubber on the bottoms so if you wear them for every-day use they will wear much faster than normal shoes.

Just put your climbing shoes that weigh almost nothing in your backpack and wear normal hiking boots.
You'll make it to the wall or boulder with dry feet and in-tact ankles much more often.

Approach shoes are light, have much better grip, and are as comfy as tennishoes if you don't have mutant feet. You can't beat them for major elevation gain hikes especially of there may be scrambling involved. They also excel on muddy soil and hard pack snow.

Approach zhoes peak in rocky terrain. Most people use it to hike to the crag and maybe warm up with them on the easy stuff. They include soft rubber (like the ones in regular climbing shoes) in the front of the sole, under the toes, so they are more efficiemt than hiking shoes on that regard. At least on paper. However, approach shoes I've seen in stores are really stiff in general and thus not that recommendable for long hikes. Specially because you will be wearing down the soft rubber much faster. So for weekend warriors doing bouldering or sport climbing isn't really justified.
So, where do they come in handy? When you expect to be 100% on rock for long periods of time: via ferratas, scrambling, alpine climbing that include a lot of easy pitches, approaching crags where you need to scramble and hike very steep terrain, etc.

You definitely haven't done any serious hiking and if you have you're asking for trouble. I usually just take my fucking shoes off for river crossings and walk carefully. Those rubber soled cheap water shoes you can buy for the beach/river are fantastic, just keep em in your pack.

I love my Camp fours by 5.10, but they sold out to someone bigger. Can't find them now. I used to wear Montrails in the Sierras, but they had a pretty stiff sole, not so great when crossing steams, and nowhere near as sticky when scrambling up slabs.
For me, all good reasons to have approach shoes.

They are a niche shoe that really only make sense for climbers. There isn't really anything else that you can climb 5.9 in and also hike for several miles. Not necessary for a manicured sport crag but there are more remote walls that require a lot of scrambling to get to. Swapping back and forth between your hiking shoes and your climbing shoes for short easy fifth class terrain is slow as fuck and if you're my partner doing that I'm leaving your ass so I can at least warm up while I'm waiting.

Yeah. I live in Utah and have hiked in the Wasatch, Uintah, Bridger and a few 14ers in the Rockies wearing fucking adidas. No regrets. Gotta watch out for spiky rocks when you're running downhill though. Getting spiked on your arch with soft rubber soles sucks donkey dick.

The good thing about adidas is what they lack in sole texture, they make up for with a really solid edge. If you know how to ski, you won't lose your footing in well laced sambas.

I was using 5.10 approach shoes for a couple years as MTB shoes. They had the same bottom as freeriders but were much cooler. I started to hike with them and was surprised by how much grip they provide on rocks. I ended up getting the new adidas crosstrails and they are basically an updated version of it. I wore them in Moab and Arches and I could climb straight up it felt like. The only thing they suck at is muddy trails because the lugs are virtually nonexistent.

what's a lug? I never had any problems on mud. I went from Merrells (which I loved but weren't as rugged as advertised) to Blackdiamond and they both are more than adequate on wet terrain in WA state mountains.

I've yet to experience a shoe or boot that didn't slide on mud anon. The old black combat boots, the new tan combat boots, danners, hip waders, duckies, merrils, black diamond, even New balance and Nike all obey the same laws of physics and fluid dynamics. The advantage of approach shoes is it is easier to skirt around the mud and as you gain elevation they are noticeably better on wet rocks and wet scree.

All my forestry buddies wear hiking boots to work in because they have to stand in the mud for some jobs, they wear shoes to hike in.
