hey /out/doorsmen rate my fire. built i earlier today inna woods. thats a wasp nest that i found on the ground squirrel hunting the previous day.

You should still clear away leaves firstly if the wind blows you'll get wet leaves flying into your fireplace second leaves are a slip hazard.
Its no big deal OP but I wanted to give you a decent reply.
At the end of the day its a well built fire. Don't overthink it.

it'll burn hotter and better. in the woods on my land there are pretty much no hardwoods. just ash trees and elms. all of those burn like shit. they make ash not coals. this way the fire can make as much heat as an oak or pine might if used as fire wood.

Looks like it's about to burn out, like you jumped from tinder to medium sticks too quickly. Also looks like you spent a lot of time on the structure, I never bother but I wouldn't know if that helps especially. And personally I clear the area right around the fire because it makes me more comfortable, but I'm sure it's fine. The people saying that this is going to burn the forest down either live in a really dry area or are clueless.

I put two fresh and pretty thick parts parallel on the ground, the space between depends on what wood is available and what I'm using it for. Then I just put the wood I'm burning across it. The burning wood should be parallel with the wind direction, that way it'll blow away better, and if it's blowing I won't start fires behind ridges or hills or wherever where the wind will form a whirl and spread the smoke around so you're always surrounded by it. The two base logs will allow oxygen to come up underneath. If I want to boil water I put the kettle or whatever on the ground between the ground logs, that way it avoids most of the smoke and can get heated from the coal that falls on the ground.

My dad taught me to find one larger log and just lean small dry sticks against that and then put paper under or grass. Has rarely failed the one match test and just throw shit on top when it gets going
