What's your country like for walking in?

UK here, it's brilliant for us. Lots of green areas thanks to enforced greenbelt laws, and places like the Lake District/Peak district/Yorkshire Dales/Scottish Borders/Highlands are beautiful and mostly untouched.

Plus, in Scotland there's the right to roam law, meaning "private property" is still OK to walk in.

Germany. We also have right to roam over private property.
Most of the country is actually small villages and towns with farmland, meadows and forests in between.
Most surface water is contaminated with nitrate, but every village has a graveyard with a water faucet and they're all marked on maps.
Only the German urge to put asphalt or gravel on every single forest road and bike trail sucks.

Pretty cool, I sometimes head up around Franklin North Carolina with some family. See duur a lot, and I go out and hike around/fish for trout by a nice creek.

Norway. Absolutely perfect, but you have to be able to hande pretty rough terrain and a lot more wilderness than what is probably considered wilderness other places. We also have the freedom to roam like in Scotland.

Agreed. I've spent my life living in the flat valleys and rolling hills between mountain ranges. Driving across an overpass in the flat lands (overpasses being the only place you will rise above the plains) and not seeing SOMETHING demarcating the horizon feels odd and unnatural.

I live in a pretty densely populated part of the UK, plus there are no woods big enough or remote enough that aren't going to be raped by dog walkers and ramblers. I wan't to be in the woods with a book and a pair of binoculars, with no one around for miles. Scotland is the only place to go for wood camping; even Dartmoor is difficult for wild camping in the woods.

From your attitude I'm getting the distinct impression you think you should be allowed to camp wherever you please regardless of who owns the land? I'm sure you'd be the first to welcome someone pitching a tent in your front garden of course.

I live in Seattle. Drive an hour and you're in the mountains. if you absolutely refuse to drive, take the train to Leavenworth, go up the chumstick highway a ways and there's a trailhead.

the only problem is that the suburbs are encroaching on some of the nicer lowland forests.

Yes, I would like to camp almost anywhere so long as I don't cause a disturbance to the environment and others, and vice versa. Any land that has no intrinsic value besides scientific or agricultural should be allowed to the public, so long as they leave the area in the same condition or better than whence they first came.

The laws in England are meant to prevent 'travelers' from sodomising the area and making an encampment on the land, in the end the laws just hurt the average joe looking to get away from the modern civilization.

Exactly. If your even luckily enough to avoid an outright NO. The main trouble I've found is fires. A fuel stove is generally fine, but people will cause shit if your burning wood. Plus in the rain and winter if the wood is not remote enough, the smoke will give you away.

If my form of recreation harms no one and no part of the environment, why is it illegal? The main killer of the homeless is the concrete and people. The woods provide you with food and shelter.

an interesting hike is the Samammish River trail, because even though it's pretty much in the burbs it's on a flood plain, so there's not much built down there, and there are still farms and horse trails. It goes from Marymoor to the slough in Bothell then it becomes the Burke Gilman Trail and goes all the way to Ballard (but stops a few miles short of the locks)

they've done some major work on the Lake Forest Park section of the Burke Gilman so it's a 5-star bike path through there.

not wilderness by any stretch of the imagination but if you ever feel the need to go on a nice long bike ride that's mostly flat it's great.

Sometimes I see photos and I just think to myself that I'd love to be there and walk to any point in the distance. I live in Ohio, and it's dead flat. It does get a little more hilly down south of where I am, but everything you see down there is owned by someone.

It's easy enough to ask a farmer to camp on his land for a night or two, IF you know it's the farmers land. If you happen to contact the farmer and it turns out that wood has been sold you then contact who you think is the new land owner only to find out its changed hands again.

I go out with a hammock and a basha. I leave almost no impact on the local environment and move on after 1 night. yet this is is the same camp as caravans and 4x4?! fuck right off

It's an interesting tradeoff, really. You have the thrill of knowing that the ground you're walking on is rich in history and has almost certainly been shaped in some way by your ancestors - but on the other hand you know it's not true wilderness and you're never very far from civilisation no matter what you do. This is true for just about everywhere outside Scotland, with the exception of some of the National Parks and a few ancient woodlands.

I've biked down to Redmond and then over to Seattle many times. That leg up through the valley between Redmond and Kenmore is the best part.

I'm not really in to the snow sports, so this time of year parks are where it's at. Discovery Park in Seattle is great. I used to spend a lot of time there back when I was carless, because the bus goes right through it. Plus it's got beach, bluffs, meadows, woods, all the local amenities in a 540 acre package.

I don't think i have ever actually been to discovery park.... probably because it's in magnolia and a pain for me to get to, but also because I am a skier before I am pretty much anything else so winter is a full schedule for me most of hte time

Just stay away from baiting and hunting areas and don't pitch your tent on a hog trail like a retard. Best place to camp is just outside the edge of the forest, anyway.

Canada, vancouver to be specific. most walkable city in canada. Tons of hiking, tons of seawalls and sidewalks. a solid quarter of the population walks the majority of their trips. Only difficulty is that it rains a lot. Besides that it's the best walking city I've ever seen.

This is where I grew up. Used to walk my dog every day along here as a kid, his ashes are actually scattered here too. Right behind this is a great view of the sea too, massive horizon just past the distant view of a few scattered villages and a giant expanse of sea (English channel).

U.S.A. here. It's god tier, depending on where you are. Just about every region is good for walking other than the midwest. I love going for a hike in the mountains (I live in the Rockies), and the trails are well maintained.

Unfortunately, alot of land is gov. owned, and that means that you can't trespass on non-walking designated areas.
