Even on a clear night, morning dew will settle on top of you. A tarp, even pitched high and open, can go a long way in keeping your dry. Also, in case rain takes you by surprise.

Used to be an anti-tent evangelist, "That's five pounds of steak and beer I could be carrying". If it rained I'd sleep under my poncho with a garbage bag over my legs, find a big tree to hide under.
Then I saw the tarrantulas in the Toiyabe NF and now I like tents.

Cowboy camping is only appropriate for a very small microclimate. No one does it outside of those areas because it’s just not feasible; the big pressure is higher and the chance of unpredicted rain is greater. The western part of the country has more predictable rainy and dry seasons and deserts.

This. Shit sucks in the southeast, nevermind all the bugs and snakes. Did it once with the matching larp tarp pictured and wouldn't recommend it. It went from mid 60s for most of the night, down to 40, light rain and driving winds before dawn, then cleared up back to too fucking hot to wear it for the rest of the day. That's pretty normal weather around here.

Different anon. Tarantulas don't really bother me personally, but after waking up to 3 scorps under my sleeping mat one morning in the Mojave, I started bringing a tent or a bivy.

back in 2012 me and 3 buddies went to Europe for 40 days
long story short, we lost each other half way
and we had 1 tent per couple, so naturally we lost our tent
and the result was that we coudnt cross the Swiss border while hitchiking in a truck, the guy left us off 1 km away from the check point and we camped somewhere in the outskirts of the Alps in the open field, we had just a pad and a sleeping bag
best sleep I ever had

Its a seasonal activity. Fall/winter in northeast is my favorite time. Nothing like sitting up that morning or waking up past midnight and seeing the stars. Tent anon should try it by leaving the fly off on a clear night.

I live in Australia and do this sort of thing sometimes. My current setup is a homemade fleece sleeping bag, a large military poncho to use a ground cover, and a big mosquito net to keep the fucking mosquitos and spiders out. I throw in a wool blanket and a foam mat if it's going to be cold, and a tarp if it's going to rain. The whole setup rolls up in to a nice bedroll and I strap it to the bottom of my backpack.

I dont think the bug net is adequate to keep out all the fucking shit bugs this god forsaken country has, but so far I haven't had any issues. Afraid I'm gonna wake up to a snake crawling in to my sleeping bag though.

i sleep by the fire outside a lot because i had some close encounters with bears. get scared in my tent. i wrap my blankets up in a waterproof canvas tarp to keep the water and sparks off. its also nice in the winter, and the fire keeps bugs away
bought a shitty cargo van this year. so ill probably sleep in there from ow on.

Work in high desert. Had a coworker in the Bush here get bit my a young rattler in his sleeping back when he woke up. Guy was looking for warmth.
He ended up losing the leg because help was too far. He died from a heart attack a few years later. Barely got into his 50s.
I goto sleep and wake up with scorpions. Hate the bastards, but they love the crickets. They're active at night but don't think you'd lose anything to them. I am about an hour from any civilization so out of snakes, ticks, scorpions, wolves, bears, they'd be my only immediate worry.

I'm in Colorado, 20 minutes from New Mexico, and scorpions here aren't too bad. I got stung once while crashing on the couch at my cousins house and it hurts like a motherfucker, but it won't kill you unless you have an allergic reaction. Afaik, the only deadly scorpion is the Arizona Bark Scorpion and it isn't even really deadly. It just happens that an allergy to bark scorpion venom is really fucking common.

Living in AZ... Every time I go /out/. Didn't even have a tent for the longest time. Even owning one now, have only used it a couple of times. During monsoon, more often than not I'll just toss a bivvy/bugnet in the bag to fend off the worst... Mosquitoes

Only shit that's ever happened is found some baby dick scorpions underneath my pad in the morning on occasion and the one time javelina were having a feeding frenzy digging up and eating shit/tp that some other /out/ists had deposited close to where I'd chosen to camp.

I tried sleeping on my back deck once. It was terrifying and I had to go inside after about an hour. Lots of wildlife walking around in the tall grass. And worst of all was the horrific growling of raccoons!

I slept out in the open in the grand canyon parashant national monument, and I highly recommend that location. It is up in the higher elevations so you won’t have to worry about snakes, and it’s beautiful. Make sure you have a really good off road vehicle though, because it’s a tough trip up there on rough roads. Also bring plenty of food and water. Extra gas would be good to bring as well. It’s definitely an adventure.
