The idea of thru hiking is romantic, the reality is boring, expensive, and difficult.
The Appalachian Trail isn't even the most interesting part of the forest - it's a containment zone for unimaginative normies.
Also there's an old dude who DID do that because he found people to drive him around. There's like families and stuff who do the whole length by dividing it up into week-long stints or whatever.
But really, the Appalachian Trail is SO LIMITING there's so many other cooler trails out there
