Hello /out/,
I know this sounds like something for /trv/ but this place is more active and It still fits within the perimeters.

I'm taking a nice, long backpacking trip to Oceania this Summer and plan to stay until late Fall. I've got family in Geelong, just SW of Melbourne and I'll be visiting them for a few days.

I'm planning on stopping from town to town either by walking or most likely by hitch hiking. I've had some novice experience backpacking in the Colorado Rockies and Northern Nevada, it was all good. However, I'm going to be doing a lot more so I would like to ask a few people on here.

tl;dr
I'm going to Australia for backpacking and I am curious to if anyone has any experience outdooring in the outback for long durations of time.

I don't know why they wouldn't, I've heard something about that helicopter tent raiding bullshit but think that really happens to people who make it try to happen to them.

Bring them a pineapple. I've got family down under and when I visited I didn't bring a pineapple and didn't even know it was a custom and it soured the whole trip.

Oi cunt / Hello friend. Geelong is a good starting point for visiting Tasmania and going up and down the south-east and east coast of Australia, but don't expect to visit NZ or the "outback" in that timeframe. Your summer is our winter so I suggest getting a Myki and Opal card and riding the trains between Melbourne and Sydney and stopping in scenic places along the way. There's a ferry across the Bass Straight that goes from Port Melbourne to Devonport regularly but you'll need someone with a car on the other side to properly explore Tasmania because it's probably snowing and there's no public transport

tl;dr choose your own adventure: Is it NZ, the outback, or what you can realistically visit from Geelong without driving?

Yes. It's a whole continent with only 26m people where 90% of the population live in big cities and towns along the eastern pacific seaboard. My "town" of 40 people in alpine Victoria is the Big Smoke because we have a resident cop and a fire engine. It's on a weird bermuda-triangle style ley-line between Mt Buffalo, Mt Bogong, and Mt Disappointment where wizards come to die. Get yourself a cheap caravan and slap a few solar panels on top, and I'll meet you at the last stop before Omeo

That happens in national parks within half an hours drive of Newtown in Sydney which isn't exactly /out/. The people that get busted have professions like "interpretive dancer" and have unexplained meth teeth and are surprised that their DOOF DOOF DOOF has attracted attention

things you need to know:

fine in NZ
dont do this in Aus though unless you dont mind getting murdered or dying from the harsh environment.

Just
>buy a $500 2nd-hand rice-burner off of Trademe or Gumtree, like an old Datsun or Corolla or something
>fill it with camping gear
>pick a direction (clockwise or anti-clockwise)
>road trip
just dont risk it down "4wd only" roads or on beaches unless you have a 4wd

aus is larger than the continental US and the environment will straight up just kill you unless you live within an hour of the east coast
