I was planning a backpacking trip this week up to Granite Lake in north western Montana. and I may be stupid, but I realized there is definitely an absolutely massive amount of snow I wasn't accounting for. I have access to basically everything needed, But I have to go it alone bc i have no friends that can make the trip. Also I don't know the area at all. Am i gonna get "To build a fire'd"?

How fast do you run that you can hike 4 miles in one hour? When I am carrying my pack up and down hills it takes about 1.5 hour per mile. I suppose it is faster if you are jogging without a pack on flat ground.

nearest public hunting is Rimutaka range an hours drive away, there's an abundance of goats on the coastal hills but it private farming and energy company windmill land, hunted there before but that's because I had a family connection. id say I see 1 person/group every hour along the ridgeline tracks, much more on the short tracks to the peaks with viewpoints seen 30 at kaukau peak once late on a weekend day. and I haven't been a part of social life in wellington for two and a half years so I wouldn't know, probably the same as any university town

Here is what you are going to do. You are going to bring your pack, map, and your snowshoes, you are going to drive into the National Forest and park as close as you can get to a point of interest off the road section that isnt snowbound. Then you are just going to light out for it, no trail needed. Try to stay up high while you are travelling for visibility, and down low when you camp for shelter. Watch out for grizz, theyll be rooting the clear hillsides and are very hungry. Good luck, dont get lost.

It can go from a hour to 5 hours depending on if the trail is fucked up or not, or if I decide to try and take a shortcut but the shortcut turns out to be the worst decision of my life.

If there's that much snow on the ground I would call the closet park office and make sure it's actually clear enough to get to, as well as get a weather report to make sure you don't get snow bound. As long as you can clearly follow the trail and shelter yourself you should be fine. If you're going to go out there and trudge through 4ft of snow without snow shoes it's a different story,
