I'll be visiting the great white north in early 2014 for some snowshoeing and climbing. Here in FL, there's really no need for jackets. However, I'd rather not freeze to death in canada.

I really have no idea what to look for when I'm buying outerwear. Good brands? It should probably be waterproof, probably be insulated. Any suggestions?

north face makes some kinda cheap jackets
canada goose is best brand in my opinion in terms of insulation. remember to wear layers

canada goose line called arctic program will go down to -25C, and the mountaineering line goes down to -30 according to their website and other reviews I've seen

Yeah, no.

If your budget is complete shit, go with, dare I say it, army surplus shit. It's going to be better than reasonably priced, and proven to be effective. Ofcourse, there's a reason it's not being used anymore, but it's going to be far better than anything of a similar price range on the 'designer' market. You aren't going to beat milsurp shit unless you're paying top dollar, and even then it'll be a toss up.

Budget is 500 lets say. I have a decent job and my hobbies are pretty cheap.

I've been looking a lot at Mtn hardwear and Arctery'x stuff. Any opinion on those?

I also went to a mom and pop store and tried some things on. Patagonia seems to fit me the best.

If your budget is that high than you can get a fairly high quality jacket. Arc'teryx is great quality and at that price should be made by hand in Vancouver rather than some of their cheaper shit made in China. Mountain hardware is another great company. My buddy has one of their jackets he paid $450 canadian for it. I forget which one but he loves it. We are in the fraser valley in BC and spend lots of time in the mountains in rain or snow. He also rode to work wearing it everyday and he never got wet even on days it was pissing out. Patagonia is cool I find you pay for the name quite a bit though. Where abouts in Canada are you going?

Depends on your budget of course, but I always find it's better to have a waterproof jacket and an insulated jacket. Nothing worse than a warm rainy day where all you have is an insulated waterproof!

Goretex jackets, and brand, are good if you can afford it but no biggy if not. They vary wildly in price but with the "big" outdoor brands you can't really go wrong. If you can't splash too much cash you can get some decent lightweight breathable shells, just google around for reviews of North Face, Mountain Hardware etc.

For insulation, go for a down jacket if your climate is cold and dry, but go for a synthetic insulation if it's a cold wet climate. Down is an absoloute nightmare to sort out when the waterproofing fails and the down gets all soaked and clumpy, to the point where it loses it's effectiveness.

But all this stuff varies depending on what you wanna use it for. Milsurp stuff is fine for just walking and camping (in fact prob better because you'll be less reluctant to fuck it up).

I have this Marker Jacket that was 80g fill and it was warmer than my columbia shell and 100g arcteryx mid

Their all supposedly new, but without tags. The ACU pair is a gen3, desert camo is gen2. The woodland pair didnt specify. These are goretex layers from the ecwcs bunch.
