You can use them hands free but they work better when they’re held. I’ve used mine in places ranging from around Mt. Hood to the Grand Canyon and in the Smokies. I’ve gone through overgrown Mississippi jungles and deserts in Utah (just day hikes in Zion) with no major issues. It doesn’t get snagged like you might think and it takes a lot of wind to really mess it up.
It’s not a perfect solution, but literally nothing is. Everything will have pros and cons. It’s up to you to judge for yourself, and an umbrella is a sort of out-of-the-box idea.
