I feel as you do, but if you've interacted with anybody on a long-distance trail recently you'll understand it's a losing battle. There's a consumer demand and a wealth of technology to satisfy it. It's not the future of hiking, it's the current reality, and getting more ubiquitous by the day.
I have semi-professional connections to people in charge of program development of the AT and CDT and they all operate on the assumption that trail users are using these apps.

So basically I've accepted that we live in the End Times and I worry about other things now.

I get it you LOVE being able to do math but you don't need to and you just like doing it as some overcompensation/flex on others

my phone can display the topo map - where I am on it - and another line to represent my route - with elevations instantly listed as i move my finger across the map

paper maps can't compete

phones are superior navigational tools - you have no rational counter-argument

do you have an actual argument or just like shouting and pointing fingers at me?

I get it - you don't know how to download maps to your phone and use an app and you are scared you would get lost if you tried - but that's doesn't mean it isn't the best way for most people.

i like to follow deer trails in my local wilderness and found recently some bonehead has placed a bunch of markers by pushing sticks and twigs into the ground at varying intervals. ive been making a point of following their tracks and pulling them all out. fuck that guy

I mean I agree don't stare at your phone the whole time - I try to keep it zipped up as much as possible and look around - THAT is a valid point

but having a phone for quickly finding your location if the trail is confusing and seeing how far you have to go is pretty indispensable

phone shows position in real time - paper map does not without landmarks and calculations

phone saves time and effort

i carry a heavy brick and i honestly never notice cuz im also carrying 3L of ice water if not more sometimes

I don't mind man-made markers at all and I frankly don't understand people who do

Paper maps are fast when you learn to read them and use a compass, but seriously, unless you are trekking through northern Canada, there is nowhere you are going to get lost, especially not in the lower 48 states.
Pull the battery on your phone also when not using it.

Those are often gang/cartel colors/markers for their territory marking their secret weed growing areas.

I didn't even use the pink tape I found an unmarked trail that had been pretty eroded and cleared by frequent feet (and a campsite) maybe 50 feet away in parallel

but it was helpful to know you were in the right place

I guess I should've clarified my post more and confused everyone. I ment an app that allows me to track my own hike and mark the path that I've already walked, and also placing saved markers myself along my hike. I'm in the balkans and where I am going specifically is quite deserted. I basically make trails myself and clean them up with my tools to pass trough. So, for stats and other purposes I really need something that can mark my trails, because I can do a lot with that info.

Most of the places deep in the wood have no cell service anyway so I would have to mark some of it manually? Is there such an app that does that? I would greatly appreciate any info.

You don’t need cell service for this. You download maps to your phone. The maps are PDF’s with GPS data attached to them (these are called “geospatial PDF’s). Your phone marks your location on the map image using GPS data, which doesn’t require cell service.

Most of the apps I know of are centered around the US. They provide access to a library of American maps. Topo Nomad might work for you. You can definitely upload whatever geospatial PDF’s you have. The maps they provide are all USGS 7.5’ quads, but it has everything else you’re looking for. You’ll just need to find your own maps. In the US, they’re free and public domain. And it lets you drop pins wherever you want, and track your course. Those options are pretty popular and most apps will have it.

I can use a compass and paper map better than half the larpers on this board, I still use satnav when I can because it's fast and easy when you are fatigued.
