It's just the mix of fun and practicality. BTW, i don't think i know about anyone who carries only that, you use those when you need to or once in a while to not lose the skill, literally almost everyone has some other form of fire starting too. Also, in the northern part of the globe, where gravel and sand are common dirt, you can find flint just laying around on/in the ground, so it's really easy to have a fire starter this way when you get totally buttfucked.
