Take everything he says with a grain of salt, and understand not everything he says is law.
He does do staged "emergency situations" to showcase a skill that could be used to get you out of that situation. He also eats bugs and roots while out there, but supplements those meals with real food off camera.
I will emphasize this point.
Entertainer, but does know his stuff.
Example: Bear is stuck in a hole. What does he do? Use logs braced against the walls of the hole, lifting and shoving, to get out.
Did it work? Yes.
Are there other ways to get out of a hole? Yes.
Was it dangerous? Yes.
However, everyone seems to forget he acted the scenario that you fell down this deep fucking hole in nothing by your skivvies. No rope, no nothing. So he showed how to get out using this ONE OUT OF THOUSANDS way of getting out of a hole.
Or another one, Bear is needing to climb up a waterfall. Instead of walking 20 feet next to it, and scaling that wall, he fucking using a vine grappling hook thing, and climbs up through the water.
Did it work? Yes.
Was it dangerous? Yes.
The scenario he was acting out was No rope, no other option, have to go through the waterfall.
Will there always be a way around? Of course there will be!
But if you can't, he showed how.
Same with firestarting and what not. Bear, why don't you just use the bow method instead of taking the chemicals off of a match, and combinging them with some other chemicals to make fire? Well once again, he acted out the scenario like that.
