Does anyone have any experience taking knives on planes? I don't want to pay luggage fees so I am just taking a small backpack on the plane. What are the chances I get caught and if so what is the punishment? Pic related is the knife and it is an international flight between two EU countries.

I traveled with an all metal 3 piece utility knife back in 2012 across EU, by mistake. They never found it on my trip from Berlin to London, but the found it from London to Milano, and they asked me to remove it from my handbag. Back then, afaik, you are facing huge fine and probably investigation and what not on why do you bring a "lethal weapon" to the plane. It won't be just that >>2347611

As there is no sentimental attachment, he can sacrifice the souvenir knife at the airport if the officers confiscate it. If they don't he can give it away as a gift when he returns.

Chances of it not being found are pretty much as good as you winning the lottery, i would not plan on that. As for what would happen that strongly depends, if it's a relatively chill country and you are good at playing dumb you might be just told to leave it there and board the plane, if that's an uptight country you could be detaind for questioning or even arrested. There are various depths of shit that will land you in.

In short, just don't and if you want to carry gear on you just shell out on cargo, it's not that expensive anyway (between ue countries pretty much cheaper than a semi decent knife).

They have those security checks mostly for three things
a) weapons (knife for example)
b) bombs (could argue its the same as above)
c) drugs
You will get caught 100%, and even if you don't you're playing stupid games and you are guaranteed to get stupid prizes. You could be arrested depending on where you go. There's a very high probability they will suspect you of ill intentions.

I got caught with this exact knife in my backpack (forgot it was in there) at NYC JFK airport and they just confiscated it and let me go through. It's a bad idea though. There's like a 99% chance the scanner will pick it up and whether or not they make a big deal about it is all up to how the wagie TSA man is feeling at that moment.

Very significant and it’s a stupid idea to begin with. Honestly just get a cheap knife after arrival at your destination and gift it to somebody afterwards. I can tell you that the amount of trouble is definitely not worth it. Just look into the legalities and possibilities sending it through some kind of postal service. Even that’s much less effort and much cheaper. Also look into the laws where you are going. Here in Germany people can possibly get into trouble for bringing any fixed blade knife, which is longer than 12,0 cm to cut cake to some festival. It’s silly, but it is what it is.

I had a wallet knife that wasnt found on the flight out but was found on the flight back. They asked if I wanted to get out of line and take it to my car or have them throw it away. "Uhh oh haha sorry i forgot I had that!" So from my experience that makes it a 50/50 of getting to bring a knife on a plane

Probably depends on country and legality the surrounding knives to begin with. I have forgot multi-tools and knives on my person and in my carry-on at least a dozen times. They get found out every time. Penalty is just that they confiscate them. If you are somewhere that knives are in dubious legal territory though, then you might be looking at charges.

I'd be very surprised if there's anywhere that would do anything more than confiscate it unless you're a complete sperg or it clearly looks like a tactical knife of some kind.

Twice I've forgotten that I had a knife on me or in my bag when going through security.

Pretty sure both of those are illegal to have while walking around (or just flat out illegal when it comes to switchblades in China) but neither jurisdiction cared. They just wouldn't let me bring it on the plane.

1/3 for me. The fixed blade they found in my bag when I was leaving the UK had been in there when I flew into the country from Spain.

Since there are no actual answers yet.. You didn't say how long your knife is. Under and including 6 cm is fine inside the EU (did that before multiple times). Otherwise they won't let you through security. It's pretty cucked but not much you can do, except sending the knife in a parcel ahead of time.

General rule in the US and internationally is under 3.5 inches or 90cm, which is also a convenient size. 4+ inch folders and utility knives in general lose some utility and anything under 4" is within your average historic spec for a "pocket" or belt knife. Under 3 inches and/or non locking in more restricted states, States and places of employment that allow it at all. I caught the autism and looked into both historical knife making and the law and that's why almost every production knife is either 3.49" or 2.98" around the world. Old knives being pretty much the average now was the interesting point, it's about the limit of utility before you grab your fuckoff/butcher/bushcraft/kitchen/murder knife. Although I have seen 5" averages for certain styles, it's only the norm in the US and the far North because we regularly field dress megafauna.
