I like going to the beach and laying in the sun and having a little swim, but I don't know if I'd pitch a tent onto one and sleep in it. Maybe I should give it a shot sometime.

The Florida panhandle beaches are fantastic but they limit the space people can visit by having limited parking. It’s a pretty good idea, actually. The crowds stay close to their cars; if you can hoof it up the shore it thins out. Also, there are a couple that are part of the National Parks system, specifically Gulf Island Seashore. I think it’s $20 a car. We went on a Memorial Day weekend and saw 3 or 4 cars turn around and leave when they saw that they’d have to pay. We paid, parked, walked maybe 1/4 mile, and were completely isolated from any crowd noise. A small fee for access to something that you can get for free really keeps a lot of people away.

A big draw for going out is the creatures. Always find weird stuff on the beach but never go there. It's all lakes where I'm set at the moment. I liked playing with the crocodiles on the beach though back in the day.

If it’s higher than the surrounding elevation, has no drainage, and is caused by ground water or rain, it’s a bog. If it naturally drains and is fed by a larger water source, it’s a swamp. I guess a wetland is part of a shoreline, but I’m not really shore.

literally what is the appeal of swamps other than maybe the biodiversity (the parts that don't want to bite, sting, or kill you anyway)

highest and most rapid concentration of the life and death cycle. yes it's largely inhospitable but that part doesn't really matter to the likes of /out/. it's fascinating and teeming with activity. the oldest proper swamps in America, for example, are actual high canopy old growth forests with centuries of life composting in the pits below. sometimes filled with gators, sometimes stalked by panthers or coyotes. the swamps near me in New England are amazing in spring when burst alive with both skunk cabbage and lady's slipper orchids, and at the same time reveal thawing deer carcasses that the beavers drag aside to build their dams. swamps are great.

best island i ever found had a pond full of fish inside of it and one very angry black grouse
pulled my canoe there and fished for a day while my grouse buddy constantly kept checking on me and woke me up screaming next to my tent 5am
have to go visit him this summer too

Swamps are shit, alligators and venomous snakes hidden all over the place. I live in swampland and to get anywhere pleasant is a multiple hours drive away, very limiting. Nice to visit though.

is there a good place to read up on all these geographical descriptive terms? like a specific geographic dictionary? I always found this stuff neat but its kinda hard to learn the definition of the words without actually knowing them first and id like the expand my vocabulary

the thing about terms like this is that precise definitions will vary across disciplines and jurisdictions (eg. here in Florida a body of water is offically considered a lake if its long enought in any direction for wind to generate whitecaps, in other places it has to do with depth and light penetration. Some disciplines define bogs and fens by pH, some define it like the guy you're replying to)

General and local ecology helps, but reading old books is where you learn the names of things. At some point you start picking up archaic English that you find in place names. Wash, burn, rivulet, ford, bight, dun, glade, knob, holler, ravine, gulch. Topographical maps are loaded with terms.
