Why is there a sudden spike in Opinel hate on this board? I seriously don't get why people are getting so riled up over an under 20 USD knife, it's like doing a smear campaign against SAK's or classic slipjoints

They are hard to open, corrode easily, and soak up water. The only thing they have going for them is the weight, ease of sharpening, and the price. Also not being made in China is always a bonus

I've been carrying the same No. 7 Opinel for 20+ years with daily use, and it's only now getting to the point where I need to think about replacing it (it's been sharpened so many times that the thumbnail notch on the blade now sits inside the hilt, and I snapped the tip off like an idiot prying with it). If you look after them even a little bit, they last for decades.

I think this may be due to a lot of people not being used to non-coated carbon steel. I oil it every couple weeks or so, and have had no issues with rust. Though I do understand some people not wanting to have to maintain it that often.

This is probably the complaint with the most weight, and applies to most knives made with wood. Although they make some with plastic handles if you like the general profile but don't want it in wood.

I have the big one. It has been a useful knife and served me well. That said I understand the annoyance. The folder can be a pain when out, the blade is easy to tarnish and rust with heavy use, and the weighting can sometimes feel strange. I used it quite a bit, but at the end of the day I bought a much smaller spiderco folder and it has served me well too.

Not OP, but it's really nice, it's always in my bag or my pocket.
Blade shape is good, remains sharp a long time.
It's very thin and has no hard edge so it fits anywhere.
Only small downside is that it only rely on spring tension to stay open which can be an issue if you are doing dumb shit with it and not paying attention.

You get an opinel 9 sized blade in a smaller handle. They're flat but still comfortable and feel like a steak knife. Good belly to the blade and the steel is soft but extremely tough so it holds an edge. It's hard to beat for being $20 and not made in china.

Unlike the majority of slipjoints, it's a robust utility knife and one of the few folders in general that I'd press into service as a survival knife. It's my EDC when I don't need one hand operation.

Honestly, the OKC RAT 1 and 2 are badass, and affordable. Rugged folders. But the RAT 1 weighs a lot, especially compared to Opinel. I actually am beginning to like the RAT 2 more. I have no experience with Douk Douk, but my buddy says the Opinel handle is way more comfy.

I personally like 3.5 inch blades more, the weight differences are negligible for all of them as far as I'm concerned. The douk is not comfortable but not terrible, it works great with gloves unlike a lot of folders. In light of cheap tactical folders, the slipjoint is an anachronism for the domesticated male. I'd rec the douk on the same level as the RAT, but opinel is up there with Case where it feels like a picnic knife and something I'd keep clean for eating food and cutting blisters rather than doing any outdoorsing.
