Really depends on where. Easiest thing you can do is make sure someone knows where you're going to be and when so they can call someone when you don't check in.

As far in the field, noise makers are useful but only when people are right on top of you. Similarly marker panels, fires, emergency blankets work but are typically after someone starts looking for them. The best active, if you're legit concerned, is what long distance hikers use: GPS or Sat based messaging. It's an expensive tool but besides being able to message from most areas without a phone and provider your GPS coordinates is about as good as it gets for this sort of thing. To be honest though if you're just starting out there's no need to complicate things with a 500 dollar solution like this, just start with easier spots and have people check in. Once you start doing multi day back country things then consider a personal locator beacon or GPS messenger or something.

A whistle is the easiest option, or a flashlight at night. Signal mirrors are pretty light too.
You could carry smokes or flares but that's probably overkill unless you're somewhere seriously isolated and in that case you should be carrying an EPIRB.

Presumably comes from SOS in Morse being 'three short, three long, three short'.

Interestingly, when I was climbing in Europe I discovered that their code is 6 rather than 3.

For what? Starting a bang with the forest critters? Flutes suck and don't carry well, someone pointed out a whistle, that is way more usable but still a short range really.

Great in the woods, for the first 200m or so, woods are filled with trees and other opaque things you know.

What the fuck for? If you live somewhere where it's ok to hunt people will just think it's the hunters. If hunting is prohibited they are even less likely to go out and check out those "shot like" sounds.

Keep a strict diet.

And seriously, first consider the fact that unless you are a complete retard or running blind (like for example running from skinwalkers) breaking your legs is very unlikely while camping, from all the actual things that might threaten you (and you should think about) a broken bone is very very low on the probability list. And if you do fuck up your leg beyond any chance of limping out of the spot you are likely to figure that out once you finally wake up from your trauma induced nap. So active emergency signals are not all that guaranteed to do shit for you. If you are THAT afraid of it get an emergency radio beacon. If you have some gray matter intact tell people where you are going and when you are sure to get back, then even if you fuck yourself up your only real need is to stay alive long enough for someone to show up looking for you, then you can go all rape whistle happy.

That's about it. Have food, water, basic meds and shelter on you so you can survive until they pick your ass up. Might also lay out a huge ass sign with logs/white fabric for helos to spot you.

I can't believe it took this far into the thread for a picture of this to be posted as the one true solution. If you're hiking alone and going to do anything but walking down well-marked trails in broad daylight, a GPS tracker is the best thing you can have. If you get into some shit, all you have to do is push the button and someone will come to find the button. It may cost a lot but someone will find you, guaranteed. If there's anybody in this world who cares for your life and you like going outdoors, you owe it to them to have one of these.

Also Personal Locator Beacon could be a solution. I don't know much about it but here's some info I found:
Key attributes include:

This. Your best bet in case something awful happens is to have someone know where you will be and what your trail plan is that can call for help if you do not meet specified check in times. Beyond that a loud noise made in sets of three.

UHF and VHF are both limited to radio line of sight. Under great conditions they can reach pretty far, but UHF in particular, unless there is a well positioned repeater. is basically push to talk walkie talkie. HF is more likely to work but requires more radio knowledge to effectively use. HAM radio is great and I encourage you to get into it, but don't buy a UV5R and expect to immediately use it as an emergency tool.

Tl;dr GPS messenger is easier and more reliable.

Cheap option: leave your planned route with a friend. Tell them to call Search And Rescue if you don't call them when you're back.

Expensive option: locator beacon. It alerts SAR right away.

In either case, Search And Rescue might not come immediately. Maybe there's a 5-hour hike to your location. Maybe there's a storm. Maybe it's dark and too windy for the chopper. Maybe the chopper can't fly for the trees. Be prepared to hunker down - if you have a tent, water, food and a sleeping bag you'll make it.

Flashlights, whistles etc only work if you're somewhere where people are around. And honestly, just getting people to find you won't do much - if you don't have reception, neither do they. They don't have equipment to carry you out. Maybe they have a beacon, maybe they'll have to hike out, call SAR, who might not come until next day.

Stuff like smoke or signal mirrors can alert a rescue team to where you are, but only works if a search has been launched (via friend or a beacon).

If you tell no one, eventually someone will miss you, and eventually they may break into your place and maybe find some sort of trace of where you went, then they will alert authorities who will search the area, but they will find you after 1+ week when you've died of exposure.

So always tell someone.

Not always the case. Plenty of people died with out S&R finding them, only to be found by some one else months later.

They already fuck us with national park fees, fishing licensees, hunting licensees. Have to draw a line somewhere so im not paying resort rates for an activity that otherwise revolves around total self-sufficiency and personal effort.

Basically this. A little extra goes a long way. Even on day hikes I bring extra food and clothing...although whereby hike it can be 65 at the start and 20 at the peak elevation.
