Taking 1 'pole' out of the ecosystem 'tent' will have it collapse. Insects and animals are used to cross pollinate many crops. Anything that would negatively(or positively) effect their numbers could make it impossible to grow some food.
Shit, just look at colony collapse syndrome in bees. It got a lot of attention for somewhat small deaths(in the grand scheme of things) because if it does get any bigger, it'll probably make some plants go extinct, which will have a domino effect on the insects that rely on those, which will impact the animals that eat them for survival, which etc... etc... etc...
And next thing you know, the only plentiful source of digestible(though incredibly unpalatable) food in the world is jellyfish...
