I like recording videos and having someone to talk to on longer trips. I don't really do anything with them though. I just like the editing process when I get back.

I was using a TLR but while that's in the shop, either half frame or an old Pentax. I carry an olympus digital for color photos and as a backup, film is temperamental sometimes.

Usually keep it to myself. Unless you're taking media of uncommon or eventful scenes, most /out/shit is utterly banal.
You have to step up to much more serious effort and equipment to make generic landscapes be worth anyones time.

This is unfortunately true. You need a tripod at the very least and have to scout the same place in different weather and times of day to get the really good photos. Going on a photo or painting hike is slow work.

I upload /out/ and travel content because I find most Youtube bloggers/travelers/hikers take a really obnoxious angle and what I really want is just pure atmosphere of the experience. So I'll throw on a chest mount and go on a hike in 4k and let the beauty of the scenery shine. Same with walking through a city. Only ever really occasionally saying something into the camera. I like uploading the kind of content I wish other people made, some of them get decent views.

But mostly it's just fun to record and edit.

Can't say if it's any good compared to the other action cameras, the only camera I used before was this old piece of shit sony, sort of thing boomers take on holidays.
Don't upload anything... sometimes I walk around with the camrea and tripod out, can be disarming to people if they think you are just a dude taking photos....

I use a mighty Pentax KP for my photos. I don't have any public flickr or anything, I just keep them carefully organized in folders for my own use.

Pentax is great for /out/. Weather-sealed, shock resistant, and rated for below-freezing operation. And such a great camera too.

I was there in 05, the communities were active but there wasn't a good way to sort out that massive flood of trash that was posted every day. The groups were good and the curated folders were nice but the death was from the whole system being pretty shitty and the fixes came too late. I do miss fapping to all the nudie pics.

I look at sample pictures of it but I'm not really satisfied with it. Look grainy as hell and not really sharp but it's possible that I'm expecting too much of this kind of camera.

I think you need to look at better images. That one isn't even exposed properly so I would hazard a guess that it was taken by a potatohead. Look at photos from someone who knows how to operate a camera outside of "auto" and there's some really nice stuff.

You're also getting a camera that can bring underwater, innasnow and mud, and drop.

Also I would hope that you would find photography through optics and personal decision making would be more satisfying than the computational photography your phone does for you

I take all of my pictures with my phone camera, but I'd love to conserve phone battery and get better images. I know practically nothing about photography though, and I would hate to ruin a nice camera by bumping my backpack or any humidity from mist or rain. Any suggestions for a good weather resistant camera for a novice?

"Cheap" and outdoor designed, something like an Olympus Tough or other outdoor and dive cameras. Nice camera that won’t shit itself in dense pack or a light mist? Let’s go back to the more affordable options. You can either baby a point and shoot or accept its eventual demise to the elements or get a chunky outdoor camera. As long as you don’t sandwich bag it so it fogs or get it caked in mud and dust, p&s work.

Higher end options aren’t much better,

it's overexposed anon. there isn't a single black pickle in the whole image. also everyone knows that when shooting digital it's much easier to underexpose and develop accordingly than to overexpose and try to get your colors and contrast in post.

also that photo isn't even focused well. i know the Ricoh has a waterproof lens which is obviously going to be a little soft, that's not a good representation of what the optics are capable of.

i'm just sayin'

It’s a 1/2.3” sensor and at i guess 50mm eq, probably f5 wide open at that focal length , there is no focus to miss, it’s just soft and not just a little.

I would personally suggest a Pentax DSLR because of weather sealing, shock resistance, below freezing ratings, changeable optics, etc. but that didn't seem to be quite the level of complexity OP was looking for

100%...there is such a liberation in knowing someone is taking their time and effort to take pro photos and/or video of wherever you are, and you can just appreciate that after you're done appreciating the very moments you spend /out/ there in real time.

It's like going to a concert, just enjoy the show, some videographer there has you covered if you really want to appreciate it after the fact.

An camera at the right time in the right place is the goal for dank landscapes and documenting nature, that also includes campfire reverie. The pro looking photos are a nice bonus but if you bother to do it at all with any care, there’s some work involved.
