How do you like to drink a hot cup of joe while at camp? Do you take your usual favourite brewing method (moka pot, aeropress, filter cone)? Cowboy coffee in a pan? Bripe?

I personally take my moka pot /out/ with me, a bit heavy and space-consuming but good for a great strong coffee without needing to measure or weigh anything

Just boil the grounds in your mug for 4 minutes, then let them settle until it cools down enough to drink. Either that or instant.

I'm looking for a decent coffee grinder to bring along, are there any good ones for a reasonable price that aren't giant monstrosities?

I'm Mormon so /out/ drinks are kinda difficult. I make my own hot chocolate which is alright but not super comfy in the summer

I grind coffee beans coarsely at home and throw em in a ziplock. While /out/ I just throw some into my mug with boiling water. After it sits for 3 minutes I scoop out all the grind and foam sitting at the top of the mug. If you don't shake the mug too much while drinking, most of the remaining grind remains on the bottom, so you end up with only slightly gritty coffee.
It's an immersion brew so it's pretty much the same brew as with a french press, just without the extra kit.

I have a Kalita one like this except mine's a green Japanese-market version. It's not tiny but it's not huge either, about the size of a regular coffee mug. It's also pretty light, the handle can be removed easily, and you could offset some of the space by packing your beans and other coffee stuff inside it. It works pretty well too, can grind enough for a full-size french press in a couple of minutes and gives a nice consistent result.

this chocolate covered coffee beans are the tits. I had a music teacher in highschool who would chew a couple roasted beans and then keep the chewed up bean in his lip like it was a dip of Tabaco. I prefer the silicone funnel drip maker or instant Medaglia De oro coffee.

the Hario Mini Mill Slim is a pretty good smaller grinder - I’ve also heard of people buying sets of plastic test tubes w/ lids so they can grind in advance and have it fresh and ready

Whether or not you want to carry a coffee maker with you depends on what your priorities are. Ultimately it's your choice what you are gonna spend your weight and pack space on. I enjoy cooking on the trail so I'd rather spend more weight on my cooking kit.

My favorite way to drink coffee on the trail is from a hollowed out potato. Fill it with water, at a scoop of grounds, stick it in the fire and let it go to a boil. The coffee tastes great and you get a tasty snack to chase it with. On a typical day hike I'll usually bring 2 or 3.

Ikea sell a hand grinder for around $20, probably don't get a consistent grind, but better than nothing... Personally I just grind at home, even if you lose some of the freshness, it's one less thing to carry
