Heirloom Hatchet

Hey /out/, a /k/ammando here. My nephew is getting his eagle scout and I wanted to get him a hatchet as a gift, maybe have it inscribed with his name and troop #. I'm looking for some hatchets that I guess would "heirloom" quality, none of the tactical plastic or bear grylls stuff. Stacked leather or wood handle probably ideal. Suggestions?

I'd suggest cruising eBay and finding something that you like the look of.

It seems to be a trove of old hatchets and axe heads. Many of which can be had for a steal - even more so if you're willing to fix them up yourself.

You could also get a brand like Gransfors Bruks, which doesn't necessarily have "heirloom"/"antique" status yet, but they're for life.

There are other good quality ones(wetterlings are cheaper, and actually made in the same factory. They just dont have as good fit and finish. Huskvarna and Bahco are good 'indsutry' brands that are great) but they are mostly pumped out with someone only giving them a glance to make sure the head is on the handle tightly. The gransfors bruks are actually put together by hand, and everything is made to be optimal(from the handle having the grain in the right direction, to the axe heads bevel be at the optimal angle)

If you want to save a bit of cash, and see a *tiny* drop in quality, also look at Council Tool's Velvicut line. Their Hudson bay axe, imo, would be the best option for someone who's an eagle scout.

Also, i dont know how much shipping is in America, but in Canada shipping something the size of an axe(or the weight of the axe head on its own) would significantly take away any value you would save by buying it used.

I'm this guy(>>227620) in that other axe thread, so i can attest to how easy it is to refinish an old used axe(provided the cutting bit isnt totally fucked up) but finding a good quality handle is really hard... And all gransfors come with flawless handles... So unless the old one already has a serviceable handle(and if it does, i can promise it'll be smarter to 'fix it up' rather than replacing it with the cheap shit homedepot has available) you'll be faced with trouble later on.

I agree that eBay would have its drawbacks.

But if you're only putting $10-20 into an axehead it isn't a huge loss if the thing shows up and isn't as you had hoped.

I'm also in Canada, and so yeah, I haven't bought a heavy axe on the internet. I scavenged old sheds and garage sales.

But, for OP, with Christmas quickly approaching he might not have time to wander around state to state looking for a decent head to refurbish.

Oh, and I meant to add that, having lived in the US on and off, I know that shipping there is vastly cheaper than in Canada.

USPS has (or at least used to have) a small box with a flat rate shipping fee of like $10 to anywhere in the country (maybe excluding AK and HI). You could fill it with gold or lead and the rate would stay the same.

If thats the case, than it would prob. be better to just get the guy something else, along with a note that you plan on restoring a 'lifelong tool' for him later on...

If its something you want to be special, dont rush it... and if you have to, play it safe and get a quality new one.

The flat rate boxes are somewhat misleading as they actually do have a weight limit of 70 lbs. That won't matter for a hatchet but it might if you filled the box with lead.
