Fellas, I want to use the same line i've on my roll for leaders, on my main line I end it with a 5er loop knot, should a simple 4er loop knot on the leader work as intended? And then a hook knot should always be weaker than a 5er loop, no? Should snap at hook first correct?

I mostly fish rivers so I always hold the rod in my hand with my finger on the line. The current will blow your sinkers around sometimes or a big log will hit your line and you have to be able to tell whether that's a bite or debris. If you accidentally set into an entire tree floating down river, you just lost a whole fucking chicken leg and your 10/0 hook. If I'm fishing in a lake or pond I will use rod holders/stick in ground because the stagnant water makes movement way too noticeable to fish. I lose fish using rod holders in moving water, I lose fish if I don't use rod holders in stagnant water.

I hold it or use a rod stake and use baitfeeder reels. They're good for bottom fishing and trolling lures because a fish can run freely without feeling line tension.

Went fishing last weekend for the first time since I was a teenager. Took the kayak out and paddled around a bit but no bites. Hooked my line on something underwater and couldn't get it untangled so I had to cut it free. Overall, a very relaxing time even with the line getting caught. I'm looking forward to a fruitful summer of relearning fishing.

if you are using braid, loop the line through the eye twice before tying the uni knot. also, don't do too many wraps when tying the uni or not lube the knot before pulling on it. I think I do only about 6 wraps with braid when tying a uni.. I use uni for almost everything, because I never have it fail. Hell... I don't even retie like I should after pulling snags and it still holds. it's just the easiest knot for me to tie because my fingers are retarded.

all small forest streams are still frozen and for all the rest season starts in 4 weeks
could go for pike or perch but it´s the worst time of year to walk trough forests because just enough wet snow to make walking miserable and not enough for skiing, dirt roads are also impossible to drive yet

uni knot thightens, loop knot stays a loop. you can connect loop to loop and open them again. there are many loop knots but i guess i stay with my trusty old 5er loop knot

Because it isn't a very good knot. It is serviceable for multiple uses and I'll use it if I don't plan on catching anything that is going to test my line, but for anything you'll use a uni for there is a superior alternative.

Unrelated but I am new to fishing can someone tell me how I should know if my reel has too much line? My reel says that it is rated for 200m of 6lbs mono which they state is 0.20mm. I have 135m of 15lbs braided line which is 0.19mm but when I have about 30m left I feel like I have far too much on my reel. It also seems to have a lot at the top instead of being even. I'll post pick if needed. Otherwise I will just use about 100m and call it a day.

so... decided to buy a longer version of my favorite ultralight rod. I knew the blank would be thicker due to obvious tapering, but man... it's way thicker. feels less responsive and obviously much heavier due to that. when it comes to ultralight rods... I think I'll just stick to short models so they can be really thin. like 5ft6 or 6ft. the thickness of the 6ft6 and 7ft models rival normal medium+ rods. my short rod feels like an extension of my body, like a little magic wand with an amazing snappiness to it... I fucking love it so much.

get a Penn Pursuit IV. that's the cheapest goto saltwater reel. the downsides to it are that it isn't as lightweight as other similar sized reels, but that's because it's more robust. the 4000 size is the sweet spot because after that, the bigger ones jump up in weight drastically and are more surf reels anyways.

guys somebody help me figure this out, I want to use the same line I got on my roll for leaders, via knots I want to achieve to have the breakpoints in order onwards from hook to leader connection to main line. Sofar I concluded that for example using a simple loop knot with 5 twists connected to one with 3 twists/rapala knot via loop to loop or loops on both ends, then pulling until the line snaps, the 5er loop always won but the line still got damaged because some of the strands ripped, thus the whole line isn't usable anymore. Same line leader with say 20kg strength, knots reducing it from hook to leader connection by 15% to 10% to 5%, so at the weakest point right at the hook it would be 17kg then next weakpoint 18kg and finally 19kg at the last connection.

You can also use equal strength leader material and an fg knot (100% breaking strength) then the only weak point is the leader to lure knot. Even then this whole system is pointless since most rods wont exert more than 10kg of pressure on a knot. The only time it could in freshwater is with pike/musky/sturgeon on the hookset which combines fish momentum with pressure from the rod. But in those situations you are already using 25kg+ on every component.

You got it. Basically it's a way to keep fish healthy while taking photos. It also helps for taking photos of thie fish in a natural posture with the its fins splayed out.
This is actually a brook trout. You can tell by the lighter spots on a darker body, dorsal vermiculations, and white fin tips.

First day on the water with my new canoe. First time I've canoed since I was 15. I was slaying sunfish left and right. Trilene XL is the best I've used, and it's cheap. It has a lot of stretch which is good because you can feel it getting stressed before it breaks. It doesn't just snap without warning. Also has low memory... with that said, I never go above 8lb. I couldn't tell you what it's like in higher test, but it should be better than most others. Sunline Super Sniper FC is the goto shilled Flouro, but flouro is expensive as fuck.

I store my rods indoors... but regardless, 150yds is only $4-6 at most places, so it's not that big of a deal to replace yearly if you want to. I pull snags out all the time, and I rarely even rety my knots after doing so... so it's tough line for sure. There is some REALLY shitty mono out there, usually the shit you get cheap for really large spools like 1000yd, the basic shit... and it's fucking terrible in many aspects. Trilene XL is good shit by comparison. I catch several pound largemouth regularly on 6lb.

Yeah, circle hooks are a godsend if you want to avoid guthooking fish. In my experience, they almost always hook the corner of the mouth and getting them out is always super easy, especially if you go barbless. It's just hard to beat the habit of setting the hook which is required for any other hook types.

octopus hooks aren't the same as circle hooks. there are some gimmicky names like "octopus circle hook" though. I have some Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hooks. you always want inline point though, having offset point circle hooks defeats the purpose and you will still guyhook fish. I went a step further and go barbless. you don't need a barb with a circle hook, the turned in point acts as a barb or sorts. hook size matters more on a circle hook than other hooks though, because the gap has to be big wenough for whatever fish you are targeting to fit it's lips in there. they are mostly used for catfish, and they have fat lips if they are big cats. I have some 3/0 and they would probably work for other species with thinner lips,

you can bend them if you do it carefully. that's literally the only difference. just grab them in the right spot with some fat pliers and make them inline with the shank. wrap some cloth or something between the hook and the pliers so you don't damage them.

Fantastic. The holes are a thing of the past, the hull is air tight. The front seat wood is really weak so I'm going to cut some wood out of the shed and treat it some time this week. But for $100, I'm so absolutely happy with my decision. It's so absolutely freeing being able to just anchor up anywhere and fish the best spots in the lake any time you want. Fuck getting hung up in trees, fuck dealing with yokels on the shore, fuck casting 150 yards. Fishing from a boat is so so nice.

***FISHING REPORT***
Fished a small lake from a jon boat today. The lake is heavily stained and shallow. I caught few small bass on frogs, whopper plopper, spinner bait and beetle spin. I believe the larger fish were on beds but this lake is muddy year round.
How do you guys fish muddy water during the spawn if you can't see beds?

Also largest crappie was 12.5" on a beetle spin. They were stacked on a flat with isolated lillys. Caught about 20 that were mostly smaller than this.

Congrats anon. It's so fun to get out there. I use a board myself, but I do have dreams of a larger boat as well. I recommend some marine varnish on the replacement wood to help keep it sealed for a long time, especially if you can't find cedar or cypress planks. Be careful though because it can get slick. I really hope you have fun. Take it places and get out there wherever you can. My board has become my favorite Frankenstein project.

Didn't even get to test all my Mepps spinners because the first one I used had me catching fish all day. Many different species too. Plenty of bigger fish got off when they jumped, but it was a size 1 so more of a trout spinner with small barbs and thin gauge hook. Impressed though. This goes at the top of my list with the Beetle Spin.

Yeah you're right. Saltwater fishing is simply way more fun. I did hit a pier on the way back and managed a bunch of bluefish on pic rel, so it wasn't all bad. I think late summer into fall time might be better for reds.

1, but I am obstinate and avoid switching lures. I've thought about tying permanent leaders to my lures with a snap/swivel to the mainline but I know storing them would get chaotic and piss me off. The minimalist approach is very streamlined and gets me by.

i miss saltwater so much. i started running a clark spoon on a carolina rig with a 2 oz egg sinker at some point, it worked well for blues but spanish mackerel really liked how much faser it could be fished

As a salmonid fly fisherman, yeah agreed. Chinooks beat a good chunk of saltwater fish in how they taste, fight, size, and of course the beautiful scenery. Freshwater stripers as well once they're big.

You can always use "light" tackle in the surf or legit light tackle on a pier, and believe me you'll be shocked at the kind of stupid shit you'll pull out of the water with a 1/2-2 oz kastmaster or a light bait rig, it at least beats the freshwater dinkers outside of the anadromous streams or deep lakes in the area.

What would you consider an underrated fish? I've ate everything in my waters from anchovies to halibut to all the fancy rockfish and the most pristine salmon you can get here and out of all of them, I think a fatty king salmon is the one that lives up to its reputation quite comfortably. Meanwhile, I think halibut is completely overrated compared to a fried whole sanddab or pickled (and VERY fresh) herring.

I do 99.9% freshwater so I cant speak for dedicated salt fishermen but I think the odds just aren't there. There is too much water to cover to say you really caught the biggest fish there, unless it's a world record. But if I catch a 8lb northern strain largemouth in Northern Ontario, I know it is probably the biggest bass on the lake.

Agreed that halibut is overrated as well. They both fall in to the category of names that normies recognize and get held up because of it. Don't get me wrong, I like both, but there's better fish out there. Underrated? I would have to say horse mackerel prepared as sashimi. I've grabbed them out of the bait tanks on the sport boats because people don't know they're a species of jack, not a pacific mackerel.

Horse mackerel is DEFINITELY underrated. There are fishing weebs out there who do a double take when I tell them that the "aji" they enjoyed in sushi & sashimi is the same (or almost the same) jack mackerel they pull up with their sabikis. I would like to try them dried one day. If I may ask, what would you consider better tasting fish in your area. I have heard of sablefish but they are uhhh pretty hard to target from shore in my area, so I haven't tried them yet. I personally like the tunas that come up here a lot, but not anymore than the best salmon you can catch.

My favorite fish to eat here is probably going to be white sea bass and to a lesser extent corbina. A good piece of well cared for white sea bass grilled with nothing more than salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon is really good. Of course I'll always welcome some yellowtail too.

Lol all things are relative. Clear is hardly a word I would use to describe our water, vis is usually less than 10' inshore. Only time it's usually a little better Is winter before the algae blooms, but that's when fish are scarce.

Yup.
The world would end if bay water had more than 10' visibility. The North Coast usually has 3-7' of visibility at most unless the sea is as still as glass and it has been for days, which usually result in some extraordinary visibility (40' I estimated in some areas). However, white sea bass don't like to hang out in these wide open ocean coves as the water becomes cold enough to kill people without a good wetsuit/drysuit quickly and there isn't much to look at other than the beautiful water due to the sea urchin menace. Swimming here had made me appreciate warm ocean waters a whole, whole lot. You should come up here due to the ideal (aka. gloomy and chilly) weather, okay to fantastic cliff fishing, an actual salmonid population, and kino scenery.

Yes, fish are "dumb." They strike on instinct, which is either hunger or a reaction response. The underwater world is actually quite hostile so they can be desperate. There is always something bigger waiting to eat them. Some fish are just easier to catch than others though.

How shallow is too shallow for river fishing? A spot I'd like to shore fish is about 1 foot deep or less.
Also, how would you guys recommend wading for the first time on my own? How calm should the water be for the my first time, assuming I follow the basic safety precautions?

If the water is that shallow, shouldn't you be able to see if fish are swimming in it?... or is the water murky? What type of bottom is in the river? Rocks, or loose sand/dirt? If it's sand/firt, expect to sink into it even more, maybe even up to an additional foot depending how soft it is. Sometimes you can sink so much that it becomes difficult to pick your feet back up to move, which can make it easier for you to get knocked down. The current is always stronger than it looks... but if the water truly is only a foot deep or so, you should be fine if you have good balance. It's easier to stand sideways and keep your balance than have the water come at you full frontal or on the back.

The bottom is fairly large rocks and the water is pretty clear, but the river is notorious for having a quicksand patch problem which is worrying. When I went yesterday to check out some spots, the water was running pretty quick. Tough to describe how fast, but quick enough to make me a bit nervous about stepping in there, especially if the current is always faster than it looks like you say.

What don't you understand? 42 degrees means Northern Pike are either spawning or pre-spawn depending on area. The high water makes it significantly harder to find pike in shallow bays due to increased turbidity and depth. I don't want to blind cast since that could disturb spawning pairs and a 10" lure isn't ridiculous for a 40" pike.

People say that the striper population these days is very low and hard to find, but I'm pretty sure I caught a few small ones in a specific spot I found. Not sure what a "wiper" or hybrid would look like either. It's just one of those fish that can be easy to confuse when small. A big striper is easy to identify, I'm pretty sure this is a little striper though. The white bass and perch I caught were shaped differently and not streamlined like this.

I suggest polarized fishing sunglasses. I wear them even when it's overcast. You will be able to see the bottom while you wade. Just be very slow and triple check your foot is planted on a non/slippery rock before you commit to taking the next step.
