How much water does /out/ carry on one of their average hikes, I personally find 3 liters to be a safe bet

two 1 liter bottles that should be full everytime I cross a good water source, as well as two 1.5 liter bottles that I can use as dirty bottles. Some lean-tos are miles from water sources in my area, so I have to fill up all water bottles and carry 5 liters into camp. That way I can cook and still leave with 2 liters to the next source that could be 5 miles away.

Recently climbed up a ridge for 15 km and walked around the toe of said ridge 23kms the next day and did the whole thing on the 4L of water I was carrying. My pack was very heavy with the added weight of my tent so will be looking to loose weight from it for the next tramp. I'm thinking of buying bottle with a filter inbuilt around the liter mark, I easily find a water source before I finish 1L and saving 3kg will be very welcome.

(2) 1 liter SmartWater bottles on the side pockets of my pack and a 500ml Sparkling Ice bottle on my shoulder (for convenience). It’s mostly overkill and I could get away with 1L for the most part. It depends on where I am.

I am in the Northeast, where most trails have some kind of nearby water. Ideally on a longer hike I have some knowledge ahead of time where the longest legs without are going to be.
Generally I carry no less than a 1L on short hike, ideally 2L, filter, and something like the Sawyer pouches or similar to expand capacity to 4L as needed.

I typically use the 1L wide mouth nalagenes because they last and are easy to drink and pour from. I also have a .5L one that's easier to keep on the day pack. For warmer weather I also have several smartwater and similar bottles around. I use them as the daily refillables but they are a little lighter so a nice bonus as long as I don't think I'll need to put boiling water in a bottle.

When I think about the hikes I've done recently, both this spring and this winter:
a) 1l (2x500ml solft flasks) for ~4-6 hours
b) 600ml (2x300ml soft flasks) for ~2-4 hours
c) 2.5l (water bladder) for ~10 hour hike I did on Monday

If I'm hiking in a location where I know I'll have access to streams I would still use a) even if it's a long 6+ hour hike.

This. I pack stupid amounts of water. Somewhere around 5 leiters because I typically hike in early fall late summer so no runoff (yeah I'm retarded, what about it?) Once went 10 miles without water. Never. Fucking. Again. Most miserable I've ever felt

I guess you could also try to remember it as the number of kilograms in 7000 grams. Or the number of metres in 7000 millimetres. Or even the number of volts in 7000 millivolts, but that might confuse you with the difference between 110V and 230V.
I know, it's quite hard to learn metric unit conversions. Pic related is much more straightforward.

if water is often? two 1l bottles. IF water is less often, 2l plus 800ml canteen. If water is rare, however much I need based on daily planning and distance between sources. Luckily where I hike you can basically find water anywhere.
