What's your preference for lights and illumination when /out/? One tool for everything, or do you carry multiples? Post your favourites.
I'm a headlamp+lantern guy, myself. I just ordered a fancy new one as a birthday present. pic related. Anybody have one? I'm pretty stoked.

sorry guys, but nothing you come up with will ever beat this. i also recommend any serious hiker or outdoors person to experience it, the feeling of freedom when you can just forget about time and do things at your own pace is undescribeable. the 24h day rythm is actually too short for most people, you are never awake in the morning and never tired in the evening.

Got this recently for a low price. Fat white and red light, good one button UI that doesnt make you scroll through everything like my old cheapo one.
Have one of those crank emergency radio/torch things as a backup. Would like to get a mini led tentlamp in the future.

I use an 18650 Fenix headlamp a little heavy but it lasts forever. Been meaning to pick up a small black diamond or Princeton one that runs on AA or AAA as back up.

Other companies make millions of lights and only olight explodes. If they have a problem with water, they should probably water-proof their lights. Sorry anon, they make a mediocre product.

Been using the same Black diamond headlamp for a while. Tried a 18650 nitecore but weight wasn't worth the ability to recharge or the extra lumens. An extra set of batteries was still less oz and spends most of the time on a low mode.

I have a Sofirn SP40. The problem with this light is its shitty headband. Olight and Klarus sell their lights with headbands that allow to detach the light quickly, but not Sofirn. So basically, with those two premium brands you're paying $50 extra just for a better headband.

for a headlamp i use the Ledlenser H8R i think it is, the one where you can cap on different colored lenses for the light (red/green/blue)
i just use the red, great for night time

then i have an Olight H1R for just an EDC light, so thats always on me regardless
i have an orange Black Diamond small lantern, great for just keeping besides your sleeping bag because it can be dimmed really low and just runs off AAA

and then if i want actual flame light i have a couple of old English made lanterns, cant remember the name right now but they are larger then most models sold today and the glass is substantially thicker and they are steel not aluminium

Only the Nitecore NU20 90% of the time. A powerful flashlight as a backup during winter hikes. Not an ultralighter, but I got it because it was 50% off and really compact. I also use it as a lantern inside the tent.

youre not going to wear NODs while hiking for anything other than spotting trail cameras, and that's the truth. hiking with NODs is dangerous. i don't care if they have a 90 degree FoV, you're still setting yourself up for injury

Fenix, bro. More specifically Fenix HM61R Amber. Absolute lad of a headlight, indestructible, waterproof, you can take it off and use it as your oldschool L shaped flashlight as well or put it on molle/similar webbing. Red/neutral light. You can recharge the fucker through usb too. I am pretty sure it is one time buy too.

Nah it's perfectly fine, it just comes down to experience and getting used to having no depth perception. If you go slow it will be pretty much impossible to hurt yourself.

Yea no shit you need a "level" of ambient light but that doesn't mean it's unsafe to hike in the woods with night vision. And even when/if you find yourself in a situation with not enough ambient light to navigate around stuff you can use an ir light (and a pvs-14 has one built in, others do not) to see better. Now if you have an old gen 2 tube or worse, that's an entirely different story. It would probably be very difficult or impossible with overhead cover and no moonlight with a cheap intensifier tube. But not many people nowadays buy those things anymore.

I like most of you nibbas so let me give you a tip:

If you have any of those little pump-spray bottle caps, you can press fit them onto some AA flashlights and make a little flood/lantern. Just run some 400grit sandpaper around inside and make it 'frosted', and it'll glow rather than shine a beam out from the light. Makes a great reading lamp in the tent, or for playing cards in camp at night.
