Yeah, you absolutely cannot trust the Amazon reviews on tents and various tarps. The people buying this stuff are much more likely to simply stay home in inclimate weather. The Chinkshit might be well constructed but if the seams aren’t taped and sealed and the material lacking in waterproofness then one rainstorm can ruin a trip.

The only tent of mine that came seem sealed was the Amazon lanshan. None of the brand name tents (rei, sierra designs, and tarptent) came sealed or taped.

Maybe the new ones, but none of the ones I own came sealed or taped. Granted all of them were purchase 6/7+ years ago (apart from the lanshan, which was a recent curiosity buy). Suspect the time at which they were purchased has more of an impact on this than country of origin.

Instead of surplus op could look at military contracted brands. Not sure about usa but in bongland we have snugpak, dd hammocks, etc who sell tents sleeping bags and clothing.
