3 season sleep system for temperate climate (hot as fuck and humid summer, hot/mild spring/cold autumn, sometimes it rains

-Swagman roll as sleeping bag (multi use and lighter and less encumbrance than sleeping bag)
-Floor foam mat for comfort and insulation
-Thermal clothes in case it's a bit colder
-Tarp

I never understood the Swagman roll. The idea behind a poncho is that it’s ventilated, so when it’s raining you do t end up sweating. Why would anyone want ventilated insulation? If anything, you’d want to ventilate it at the upper body (like any quilt or sleeping bag or blanket) in case you woke up hot.

And what are you going to do with it? You can't wear it while hiking (incompatible with rucksacks), you can't wear it while working (that shit gets in the way). If you're stationary, but not in a way that you could use a sleeping bag instead, then maybe there's a point.

Obvious nonsense, a sleeping bag makes more efficient use of fabric and will always be lighter at a given amount of warmth.

So yeah, there can be a point to those things but do consider whether there is in your case.

Don't get a swagman. Get Snugpak poncho liner instead, it's half the prize, has sleeves and can do everything the swagman can excluding the turning into a very bad and non-comfy sleeping bag. It's still a very practical sleeping gear when you use it as a blanket or combine it with softie pants and/or wear it inside a sleeping bag in colder temperatures.

Based off how thick they are, the heaviest they are using is 3.6, but it’s probably 2.5. It’s not that warm, similar to the polyester filling of a regular poncho liner (Apex is poly too), and it definitely doesn’t justify that price.
I’ve used my $30 poncho liner to sleep down to 50*F without any mid layer, just a base. A swagman isn’t magically 20* warmer.

As it shows in the picture, you can clip it so it's folding over itself at the side 'vents', making it less efficient at losing heat. If you wake up hot, just 'flap' it to get rid of the heat.

I own one of them, a really nice bit of kit IMO. It's waterproof itself, so I've only had to put on the actual rubber poncho when I went out in a storm because I wanted to go walk around in a storm. It doesn't get that stormy here.. and neither does it get so cold really.

I guess it also helps with the looseness that it goes over a backpack easier.

I only need a long sleeve base layer, a mid layer, and a fleece when hiking. This thing would be like hiking with a fucking sleeping bag on. It’s retarded.

Why not?
It is waterproof, at least resistant, but I have a ruberised poncho for just in case.
They sell their own ponchos for the liner, but the toggles are a bit big for the eyelets on the USG I'm pretty sure, I've got carabiners to keep it to the poncho itself.

What is my best option for a 3 season sleeping system? I have a iso mat already. I’m stuck between just a wool blanket, a surplus poncho liner (which I don’t think would be warm enough now that I think about it), and a sleeping bag. Does any one have any advice? Temperatures where I’m from vary wildly it was 78 one day this spring and sub freezing the next.

First forget the term “3 season.” It’s a marketing gimmick that isn’t true outside of California. Most people have three setups: something for summer, something for winter, and something for the “shoulder seasons” which could technically still be in calendar winter or summer, depending on where you are.

What most people do for “three seasons” is buy a sleeping bag that’s appropriate for the summer and augment it with heavier sleeping clothes, or buy one for the shoulder seasons and just vent it/be a little warmer in the summer. It all varies from place to place.
