>>2366285I make a little tripod out of a few pieces of kindling, and pile tinder up around and on top of it to make a little house. I put a cotton-ball-in-petroleum-jelly fire starter inside the little house. I put a pair of logs on either side of the little house, and lay kindling across those logs, over the little house. Then I lay split logs across and perpendicular to the kindling. Then more kindling. I might do three or four layers like that. Then logs on top. Then I light the firestarter inside the little tinder house using whatever is handy. A Bic lighter is actually less convenient than a ferro rod for this, but a candlestick lighter is better.
