>>2369126On my last outing I saw two new things.
>a moleI’d never seen a mole in the wild. I walked off to take a whiz, and saw something moving out the corner of my eye. Sure as shit, it was a mole. He was a little bigger than /out/‘s favorite backpacking meal: a large potato. I couldn’t see much of a head or face, but I could see his feet. Weird looking thing. I went to grab my phone to snap a picture for my wife but when I came back he had vanished (probably back to his underground mole city)
>a dying raccoonI’d never seen a wild mammal dying of natural causes. I’ve shot some, and seen other hit by cars, and of course some that had already passed. But never one that was in the process of dying via natural causes. Little guy was obviously in pain, chattering shaking. He already had flies all over him, which was strange. He may have been bitten by a snake or had rabies something. Just a guess based on the erratic movement. A trail runner stopped and watched for a bit. Pretty sad, but circle of life. There’s no more appropriate way for a raccoon to die. No picture or video because I’m not a morbid asshole.
>wild turkeysNot new, but rare. I heard some leaves rustle off to the right. I looked and saw a squirrel jump onto a downed log. I watch him run for a bit but hear more rustling. That’s when I saw a female turkey, walking away, just after creating a hill. I watched for a bit, then moved to get a better look. She must have heard me, because she took off, followed by three others I hadn’t seen.
