The modest pipe edition
Feel free to post tobaccos (no weed allowed), pipes, collections, pics of favorite combos for going /out/, pics of what you're doing with your pipe and any questions you might have.
Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a corncob pipe and a pouch of either Captain Black or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $25.
Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.
If you're still having trouble, try filling your pipe this way:

I used to smoke cigars when i went out camping. I like cigarettes here and there, but they're far more dirty, and the politics and nature of the companies behind them are despicable, and turn me off from them. I'd be interested in trying a pipe but all research points me to the fact that all three of these are equally dangerous. I like tobacco, but is there really no safe way of smoking it? I don't like vapor products, and the whole appeal of tobacco is the smoke feel, taste, and smell. Of course, everything in moderation. But nicotine is addictive, and i don't want to feel like i've become dependent like i have in the past.

>>2370873 Just from experience, I consider pipe smoking and cigar smoking to be my favorite hobbies, but I’ve never become addicted. I’ve gone a month or two without smoking. Hell, I really only smoke Fri-Sun with no urge to smoke the rest of the week. The only thing I guess I could consider myself addicted to is collecting various cigar blends and pipe tobacco blends. I have around 700 cigars and around 30 pounds of pipe tobacco cellared up lol. But all that being said, I’m not addicted to actually smoking those things. So I don’t know if it’s because you don’t inhale those things and thus aren’t absorbing as much nicotine, or if I’m just not prone to nicotine addiction. I wouldn’t worry about it, especially if you say you enjoy smoking here and there. That tells me you aren’t prone to nicotine addiction either.

Its a shame too, since i see the appeal of every kind of smoke, and in terms of feeling i think i like cigarettes the most, but just by definition of inhaling it it's always going to have that addictive quality.
>>2371276 I started with cigars and moved to cigarettes from there. Just never tried pipe smoking so why not? I don't have a problem with doing any of them despite the risks involved, it'd be no better than liking to drink knowing full well what it does to your liver. Both nicotine and alcohol generally just destroy the body. I would say that i'm hung up that something i like is dangerous for me, but hell that's just most things in life at that point. I wish we were at the point where the risks of carcinogens were fully negatable. I would love to try a genetically modified tobacco that doesn't have nicotiene in it.

Question about quantity. I'm going hiking for a week and want to bring a pipe with me. I've smoked before a fair few times but only with a friend's pipe and tobacco. How much should I bring for a week in the wild, maximum of two smokes a day?

>>2370845 >I find hangers really heavy In general low hanging bents and semi bents are way easier to clench because they have less of a lever. That only plays if you use a reasonably small/light hanger. I have several in the 40-55g range and they are all very comfortable to clench and hike away. Pic related is my vintage Brubu, it weighs 50g and it is the most comfortable pipe to clench I ever tried, probably because it was designed for alcoholic farmers doing physical work and smoke pipe all day long. I smoke this one often whilst walking/hiking, light it, hang it in your mouth, tamp down tobacco every 10 min, lasts around 4 km.

>>2370873 I've never had a problem with addiction. I'll smoke semi-regularly for a couple months, then I might go months without one. There are definite health risks, but they aren't as high as cigars and cigarettes. Unlike cigarettes, you don't inhale, so anything in your lungs is second hand. Unlike cigars, you don't have wet tobacco leaves pressed against your lips, so you've got lower risks of oral cancer. I make a point not to drink alcohol while smoking, as alcohol can strip the protective mucous of the mouth and increase risk.
At the end of the day, it's about moderation. I don't smoke multiple times a day, nor do I smoke daily. When I'm in the mood, I might smoke a few times a week. Yes, it can cause cancer. So does alcohol, pollution, sunlight, and microplastics. You'll always be exposed to stuff that causes cancer, so I figure I might as well enjoy the ones I like responsibly and take reasonable precautions. I try to stay healthy and I've got insurance for checkups and such.

>>2376189 >does anyone know if they're still as legendary as they used to be? As far as being the same as the blends when they stopped production, yes they’re exactly the same. They were made by STG then and now. However, some of the blends are different to the Murray’s produced blends, which were produced from 1980s-2005. And of course, they’re different than the actual Dunhill produced blends pre-1980s. A lot of old timers say that the post-2005 tins taste different, especially blends like Elizabethan and Royal Yacht, but they also say that if you’ve never had pre-2005 Dunhill/Peterson blends, it’s not that big of a deal as the newer blends are still quality tobacco.
Anonymous
>>2376383 I don't understand how it's so hard to just keep the same blends. The only reason it would change, with change in ownership, is if they intentionally lower quality to save costs. If that's the case, ignore the feelings of nostalgia and find a better brand.
Anonymous
>>2376386 From my understanding, when Murray’s took over from Dunhill, it was because Dunhill ran out of aged tobacco. Basically like what happened to McClelland, except McClelland just quit altogether without selling their name when they realized they couldn’t make blends of the same quality. I heard the Dunhill produced blends had a certain “rotten” smell to them when they were first opened due to the amount of aging the tobacco had gone through. When Murray’s bought them, Dunhill had used up all their aged leaf, so Murray’s started using fresh leaf and substituted the Syrian latakia with Cyprian latakia.

>>2376468 Elizabethan is solid. Not necessarily the best VaPer, but extremely reliable when you want a proper VaPer taste and some nicotine. From what I understand, it does taste different than the pre-2005 Murray’s version, but it’s actually a bit of an upgrade. I’ve never had the Murray’s version personally, but I have had the Sutliff Elizabethan Match, which reviews say does taste nearly identical to the Murray’s version. Based on that, I would say the STG produced Elizabethan is superior. Much more complex, tangier, spicier, and just more flavorful overall. The Elizabethan Match is decent, especially for the price, but it’s mostly sweet breadiness with a hint of perique. Maybe try both and see which one you prefer.

Unpopular opinion, but I don’t like big bowls. Since I’ve bought a 320, the latakia blends I smoke in it just aren’t as full flavored as when I smoked them in smaller bowls. I’m getting a wider variety of flavors, but when I smoke a latakia blend, I don’t wanna taste a lot of Virginia, and that’s what’s happening with this big bowl. Just like with big ring gauge cigars, you get a wider flavor, but it’s not as concentrated and powerful. I think my sweet spot is .75-.80. This .90 diameter chamber just ain’t working.

Anonymous
>>2381838 physical addiction hits a lil different. If it works for you, it works for you and thats great, even though your health might suffer. Some people dont find a coping mechanism ever. I just feel like Im seeing a lot of people delude themselves about it like I did. Then you end up smoking (pipes, cigars, cigs, dohka, whatever) for 20+ years and you sound like Tom Waits and start hacking whenever you have to walk up stairs. And its become such a part of your life that everyday things seem empty with out it. Im projecting a little here, and I know that. I'd say if you wanna be /out/ not smoking would be a great place to start. Unless you live at high altitude like me, then who the fuck cares. Fun fact for all you smokers who want to do some high alt /out/ing, smokers are used to having less oxygen in their blood stream and you dont suffer nearly as much as other people when you start gaining alt. I can snowboard all damn day at full blast and do hikes with massive altitude gains because of that and good cardio. Cant do that shit without biking or something in the off time.
tldr maybe think about addiction as a hobby, unless youre at high alt and exercise regularly then go wild I guess fuck it

That reassures me when I think about pipe smoking becoming a chemical addiction. It's not just less nicotine compared to cigarettes, it's basically none. (weird Mac Baren Extra Triple Giga Nicotine McVomit blends aside, and no one smokes those who isn't a cigarette smoker anyway). I sometimes smoke a cigar or a hookah, and there's considerable nicotine in that, but not in a single bowl of an average sized pipe filled with average tobacco. I have never craved my pipe, and I only notice the mild relaxing/invigorating effect of the nicotine if I'm paying attention to it.

Plus, I do a lot of hiking in my free time, typically at a 3,000ft-5,000ft elevation. A lot of those times, I also have my pipe with me. I’ve gone months without smoking pipes or cigars with no withdrawals. I actually only smoke on the weekends as well, never on weekdays. I consider it a hobby because I’m more “addicted” to the collecting aspect. I like trying as many blends as possible. I like picking up a new pipe shape when I can. Idk. I just think some people are prone to addiction and others aren’t. If you are prone, then yes you should be careful and should probably stay away from nicotine. But if you aren’t prone to addiction, then I see no harm at all with smoking in moderation.

It's just going to be more user friendly that way. Stays lit longer, you don't have to keep re-lighting it and then walking this frustrating knife's edge between your pipe going out all the time and roasting it so hot it loses all the flavor and you get tongue bite. That tends to happen with low quality smaller pipes especially if you don't have the feel for smoking one yet.

Also despite the high initial investment of a pipe collection and small cellar, I'm saving on average 80-100 euro per month that I would otherwise have spent on rolling tobacco because I haven't had to stock up for at least 4 months.

Noob here, what type of tobacco should i use to break in a pipe?
Anonymous
>>2384178 Depends what you plan to smoke in that pipe.
The rule of thumb is if you use a strong flavored tobacco, especially aromatics, in a pipe, those flavors will ghost in the pipe and tamper with the flavor of a more mild tobacco like a Virginia. So if you're being really particular you smoke like with like--have a pipe for aromatics, a pipe for Virginias and mild tobaccos, a pipe for English etc.
Honestly I don't find it matters that much for everyday smoking. You should have at least one good all-around daily driver pipe that you can smoke anything out of. If you're being a fucking connoisseur and need a completely untainted smoking experience to taste a tobacco get a fresh corncob for 5 bucks.
>tl;dr the only concern is flavors ghosting in the pipe. So smoke whatever you will smoke out of it regularly and it'll be fine Anonymous

That and my grandma’s boss was always smoking his pipe when I was little and I’d visit her at her office. What’s funny is this was in the DoJ office in the Federal Building in San Francisco. Even in 2002 this guy was still smoking in his office. It’s bizarre considering what an authoritarian hellhole that place has become. But anyway, that smell in the office, the LOTR movies, and the fact I was already smoking cigars are what drove me to try a pipe.
Anonymous
>>2384241 >You should have at least one good all-around daily driver pipe that you can smoke anything out of. This. I have a couple dedicated Virginia pipes and several dedicated English pipes, but the pipe I smoke the most is a Savinelli seconds pipe that I smoke anything in. From English to aromatics to burleys. You’ll hear people on forums saying “Gregory Pease said you have to let your pipe rest for a week!” or “Russ Ouellette said you have to have at least 5 pipes dedicated to each type of blend!”, but all the old school pipe smokers just bought a $10 Dr. Grabow and smoked that their whole life. I actually like the weird mix of flavors you get at the bottom of the bowl from all the ghosting from various blends.

Pipe arrived (pic related), nice and small. As anons predicted, it was difficult for me to light properly and keep going but once I got the hang of it, I enjoyed a nice 5-10 minutes of puffing. I was smoking some Ashton "Guilty Pleasure" and other than a bit of bite when I forgot it was a tiny pipe and not a cigar, it was pretty nice. Also, Smoke-king, where I got this and the tobacco from, gave me a cheeky little mint chocolate. Very nice.
Anyway anons, any other advice to give? Anything I should keep in mind? I was going to get a nice entry briar, but was wondering if the stem shape matters? I know a shorter stem gives a hotter smoke, but is the actual shape just aesthetic? How about bowl shapes? Cheers.

You don't feel as much force on your teeth. Bowl shape is largely aesthetic. If you like having a small pipe, the Ropp Etudiant line is a reasonably priced small briar. Picrel is the rough size of the line up. I have the J10 shape, which is slightly longer, and I love it.

Anonymous
>>2388135 >How about bowl shapes? Similar to cigars the main difference is aspect ratio. A wider (usually shallower) bowl seems to open up the flavor a bit more, whereas a tall skinny one is more concentrated. Beyond that it's just aesthetics. Herbal smoking blends are one of those things that get talked up a lot by pussies that won't smoke tobacco and high school kids who want to look cool or have a cheap and legal way to get high. In reality their psychoactive properties are way overhyped, they are very, very mild if present at all. I've seen some occasional posts about how much some people enjoy the flavor of smoking some common, non-psychoactive herbs. >>2396210 Pipe tobacco is a lot 'cleaner' than cigarette tobacco, yes, though it obviously depends on which tobacco it is and finding one you like may take a couple of tries.
A churchwarden pipe (that's the term for the long stemmed ones) is a pretty good one to start with due to having a rather cool smoke and it does come with the benefit of being quite aesthetic too so if you don't take up using it it's at least something pretty for the mantlepiece.
Missouri Meerschaum did (do?)a nice line of mini-churchwardens, they're relatively cheap at ~£25-30 so not much of an investment to worry about if you don't like it, though if you want to go with something solid there's Petersons who do a good line of churchwardens at £70-90.
Do some looking about online and don't feel pressured to buy the first thing you see, pipe smoking is all about taking it easy and so should the buying of them be.
One more thing - never buy from China.
Anonymous
>>2396210 Broadly there is two types of tobaccos, naturals and aromatics, the later ones have been sauced an now taste like peach or vanilla. Naturals are mostly blends of different tobaccos, Viginia, Burley, Oriental, Perique, Latakia, Cigar leaf, Cavendish and what not. There is literally thousands of variants and no one can say what you like best. Best is to check if your tobacco shop has house mixtures, smell those, pick what you like best.
For the pipe, you'll need some cheap pipe tools, a clipper lighter, and a pipe. The long stem pipes you mentioned are reading pipes, you hold em in your hand whilst reading a book sitting at home, they are impractical for anything else.
For beginners pipes, try a common shape, bruyere wood, some ok tier beginner pipe will be around €40
Anonymous
>>2396234 >>2396236 Thanks for the detailed responses.
I would prefer the longer stem pipe I would think, as I dislike harsh, hot smoke when smoking other things like hookah, e-cigs or any weed.
I'm not very sure what type of tobacco I would like, ideally it would be lower nicotine (I don't really enjoy the head buzz and too much makes me nauseous) it's just the act of smoking that I love. I suppose a mild, sweeter tobacco would be good for me.
What are some good online resources? I can't tell when something is biased or untrue about pipe smoking, I have no frame of reference unfortunately
I do like the idea of a reading pipe being unsuitable for everything else. Having something readily accessible in my pocket will prompt me to smoke more than I should. Whereas something that requires a bit of effort before sitting down to read/relax sounds very nice
What are some things to look out for when choosing the quality of a pipe/tobacco. You mentioned not buying from China, anything else?

>>2396503 In this case the taste is just not that overwhelmingly strong and the nic hit is mild. Like if you smoke some heavy latakia English blend you get real strong taste and it is intense like a fat cigar and you can only really enjoy it after a full meal with a stiff drink to go with with. This SOB is rather light, lots of Orientals, Yesindje tobacco gives it some weird alkaline creaminess that you normally only get from Turkish cigarettes. The latakia is tuned down and the selected Virginias and Perique are also not dominant. It's a weird but great mixture that makes it easy to smoke a quick bowl any time of the day with out getting a buzz or being overwhelmed by the tastes.
>>2396523 I believe you, outside Europe it is only available from one online vendor. Thing is the guy that makes this mixtures, Hans Schürch, he is born blind and he has built himself a tobacco company solely on mixing pipe tobaccos exclusively by his sense of smell, taste and feel. At the risk of sounding silly, should I be producing large thick clouds when smoking a pipe, similiar to a vape or hookah, or should the smoke be thinner and less volume, as with a cigar/cigarette? I struggle to determine if my pipe is properly lit and smoking correctly and seeing videos of people smoke produces varied results. Some people can blow rings of thick smoke, while others puff out only whisps

>>2396816 I always ignore the smoke and focus on coolness and flavor. A good rule of thumb is that the pipe should always be pretty close to going out. If it is ripping hot it will produce more smoke, but also you will get tongue bite and the flavor will not be as good.
Anonymous
>>2396826 >>2396998 In regards to flavor should pipe smoke ever be acrid or harsh? I have a hard time with cigars because of this, though I think the heat from the smoke plays a factor

Anonymous
Food, drink, nice cool weather and a fresh bag of tobacco innawoods. Little things really can cure a shitty week
Anonymous
>>2397024 That's like asking if whiskey should be harsh. Yes kind of but there's good harsh and bad harsh. There's a kind of harsh it gets when you're smoking it too hot, or the tobacco is stale or dry, that is just all around unpleasant flavors. If it has those qualities you're doing it wrong. If it ever tastes nasty and sour or prickles your tongue something's not right.
But then you have flavors that can be really robust to the point that some people might call them harsh. Kind of like 120 proof bourbon, if that's what you're into it can be a very desirable quality but it can come across as harsh or rugged to newcomers. If you think that a cigar is harsh, as long as it was a good and fresh cigar, this is probably the issue. Just like someone might like a light smooth Irish whiskey but not a rugged Kentucky bourbon, the more robust flavors might just not be your thing. Try a mild burley or Virginia tobacco, or an easy aromatic like Lane 1-Q, if you get harsh flavors out of those you're doing something wrong.
Hookahs are not a fair comparison at all. The flavor is made to be one-dimensional like you said, but also pulling it through the water cools the smoke and changes its character completely. And with a hookah you inhale into the lungs vs. a pipe where you just puff it in your mouth.

>>2396816 I suppose it depends a little on what it is you're smoking. Some leaves burn a lot easier than others, or at least that's how it feels for me personally. An aromatic tobacco you're supposed to SMELL, not so much taste. So a lot of smoke from the bowl itself is the way to go. Unironically, softly blow into the mouthpiece now and then to both cool as well as produce some aromatic smoke. When it comes to drawing you're essentially just pulling down the ember deeper into the chamber. I'm not good at drawing on purpose either so often I just breathe through my nose and then it's a more natural process instead of actually pulling on the mouthpiece. The best way in my opinion is, if you just experiment with different ways of smoking your specific pipe and tobacco. Once you actually try different things; whatever that may be in your case, and get a smell or actual taste that you like and reminds you of the one you get when smelling the raw tobacco in the pouch then you repeat that.
Ironic as it may be due to me preaching, I still think you shouldn't listen too much to other people. Just do your own thing and try different practices. Pipe smoking in my eyes is all about the individual. I have never smoked a single fag in my entire life but also had serious pneumonia when I was a wee lad; almost killed me in fact. My nose is constantly dorking it up and one day I can smell just fine and the other I can barely breathe. Always had a different kind of experience when it comes to smell and no knowledge of anyone around me that helped to ease me into pipes except my father chain smoking when I was little so I detest cig smoke. Basically, I had to just find my own way of doing things and so should you. Just do whatever you enjoy the most, bud.

>>2397051 >Cigar flavor being rugged and harsh This is probably the case, I'm not sure what the cigar was specifically but there were some that I didn't enjoy due to that, they also had a very leathery after taste, reminded me of peat
The cigars I do like are the Romeo Y Julietta love stories, which are fragrant and sweeter without the hard taste of leather, so I'll probably ask my local tobacconist for a pipe tobacco with a similar profile
Unfortunately I've gotta wait til Monday, but I am excited to try.
What stem length would you reccomend for cooler smoke without being very long like a churchwarden? I dislike the aesthetics of stubby pipes anyway, they remind me too much of crack pipes or weed pieces
Anonymous
>>2397083 >what stem length would you recommend for cooler smoke Stem length doesn't make as much of a difference as people think. Stubby pipes do smoke a little hotter but any average pipe should be fine. And this sounds counterintuitive but I find a large bowl helps, both wide and deep. That helps you get a coal and keep it going with minimal re-lighting. Pipes with small bowls I find I'm constantly going between re-lighting it all the time and ripping it way too hot, or the pipe going out, no in-between.

straight or curved anons? Do you really have to use filters?
Anonymous
Quoted By:
>>2400006 >straight or curved anons? When I first started smoking a pipe, I only smoked bent pipes and always said that straight pipes weren’t my style. Now I smoke straight billiards almost exclusively, specifically smaller billiards around 5.2-5.5 inches long with a .75x1.5 chamber. I find they’re easier to clench, they gurgle less, and they fit the perfect amount of tobacco. I also have a Canadian that’s a bit longer at 6.1 inches, but the chamber is the same size and smokes very well. It’s really personal preference though. Some say that bent pipes clench better and smoke cooler. I’d say try both and see what you prefer.
>Do you really have to use filters? No. I don’t use filters. In some of my pipes I use the filter adapter to tighten the draw if it’s too airy without it though. Again, it’s personal preference. But I figure I don’t use a filter when I smoke cigars, I don’t need a filter for my pipe. There are some people who swear by a filter and say the smoke is less harsh and more flavorful, so again, try it out, see if you like it.

Hello people. I've been enjoying smoking a cigar every once in a while, and I would like to try smoking a pipe. However the whole process of packing a bowl and lighting and tamping and relighting just seems tedious. With cigars I can light once and finish the cigar no problem. Is it really as tedious as it seems?

I'm also just beginning to smoke a pipe and I too find it a bit tedious, but that's because I feel like I'm doing something wrong and have to constantly reference a YouTube video to ensure I didn't forget a step

Picked up my first pipe, this Missouri Meerschaum Legend and some local blend tobacco (the tobacconist said this was their most popular aromatic). I've smoked 3 bowls out of it so far and while I enjoy the act of smoking the tobacco doesn't have much flavor (it smells incredible though, I'd love a candle of it) even if I retro hale. Keeping the pipe lit is a hassle but I'm sure that's due to my inexperience. Actually smoking the pipe is a bit difficult as it's very different to what I'm used to (inhaling things like joints or hookah). I've tried using the breath method as explained on a YouTube video, but I end up blowing more smoke out of the pipe than I do my mouth or nose, which feels wasteful (it's also not relaxing since I'm quite focused on doing it right). I haven't experienced tongue bite though the top of my mouth gets a bit prickly after a bit and I'm not sure why I'll probably finish this ounce and determine if I'll stay in the hobby, I must admit it's hard for me to reconcile the health risks (it's been hard to find information on pipe tobacco that isn't related to cigarettes) and the lack of flavor is irritating
OP
Anonymous
>>2400541 >smells incredible but doesn't have much flavor That's normal for aromatics. Try moving on to some more standard tobacco like virginias and burleys. Don't smell nearly as heavenly but you can actually taste the flavor. Go back to the smoke shop, explain the problem and ask for some recommendations. If you're just buying from a drugstore or vapefag "smoke shop" try Half and Half, that was my gateway drug into non-aromatics. You can even try blending it with your aromatic to try to get the flavor and the room note at the same time.
Anonymous
>>2400541 "Aromatic" is a trap word. You're not supposed to taste an aromatic but smell it. Blowing smoke through the pipe and into the bowl isn't a waste for an aromatic by that logic. Your first pipe smoking sessions are always going to suck somewhat or at least bring you back into reality. Just keep going and get some different tobacco.

>>2400559 >>2400564 >Aromatic is a trap Shame because if this tasted like it smells I'd probably smoke 8x a day.
What tobacco would you reccomend? I had asked the tobacconist for something that wasn't too heavy on nicotine and had a sweeter flavor. I've had some cigars that are very leathery and acrid tasting, and I did not like those at all
He also mentioned that the tinned stuff has preservatives and other chemicals added, which scared me off them. As I mentioned, I'm trepidatious about the health risks and I'd like to be smoking as close to pure leaf as I can.

Quoted By:
>>2400573 >sweeter flavor and not too heavy on nicotine Definitely go for a pure Virginia. Ask for the tobacconist's recommendations for Virginias. The nicotine is low, the flavor is gentle but a little more taste than an aromatic, and it is slightly sweet. I like to blend virginias with aromatics sometimes.
Warning about Virginias, they can be a little more challenging to smoke, they like to run hot so it's easy to get tongue bite if you don't keep it cool enough--or to overcorrect and keep letting your pipe go out. You might want to practice your technique on what you have first.

Unless they grow, harvest, cure, and process their own tobacco, they’re just trying to get you to buy their own stuff. I’m not knocking house blends either. >>2401393 Remember that the smell other people smell, and the flavor the smoker tastes, can be very different.
That applies especially with cavendish. The room note is amazing but it can taste kind of bland unless blended with other tobaccos.
Latakia is kind of the exception here. It both tastes and smells like your face is in a fucking campfire, and that can be a good or bad thing depending on what you like. But it tends to overpower other flavors.

This is one that gets better as you smoke it all day long So I suppose you and other anons are right about Virginia and Cavendish being a bit bland. Perhaps I'll need to get something with some body, without leaving my mouth feeling and tasting like leather (like some cigars do)
Anonymous
>>2401393 >The description of Cavendish sounds quite nice I’d stay away from any primarily cavendish blends. As others have said, it’s bland and flavorless on it’s own. If it’s used as a condiment, it can sweeten and smoothen out a blend. But by itself, even if it’s flavored, it’ll just taste like hot air. Also, I don’t think Virginias are bland at all. They have a lighter flavor than latakia for sure, but they aren’t bland. They are sweet, tangy, bready, toasty, and sometimes earthy or fruity. A quality Virginia blend tastes amazing. Cornell & Diehl Opening Night is a really good straight-Virginia blend that has no toppings and is readily available. Just high quality sweet Virginia leaf. Or, if you are looking for a darker more in your face flavor, a latakia blend will be the way to go. There is a bit of leatheriness in latakia, but not as much as a cigar, and I personally think latakia has more flavor than any kind of cigar tobacco.

>>2401753 That’s just how it’s been since the 1800s, anon. Vulcanite, then bakelite, then acrylic. Not many pipes use bakelite anymore, but vulcanite stems have been around since the late 1800s and acrylic stems have been around since the 1930s. There are some artisan pipes that use wood stems, but a lot of the time even those are lined with vulcanite or acrylic on the inside. The reason for that is the wood absorbs a lot of the stuff that goes through it, making it harder to clean and having the potential to clog up the narrow air passage. In other words, your briar pipe that’s supposed to last forever wouldn’t last forever with a wood stem. Clay pipes typically have either no separate stem or a wood stem, so you could go that route, but it won’t last as long as a briar or meerschaum pipe.

As for microplastic: Anything is full of that shit now. You're smoking tobacco, dumbo. No matter to what lengths people go to sweet-talk it, you're still partaking in something that will fuck you in one way or the other. Microplastic or mouth cancer or inhaling through retro. It's an potentially painful analfuck of a past time adventure either way. Just sit down and enjoy the fucking pipe for life is already gay enough as is, might as well just butter up your arse and enjoy the good kind of fucking you'll get anyway.
