Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a corncob pipe and a pouch of either Captain Black or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $25.
Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.

Does anyone have any sort of advice for reading? I find it nearly impossible to read while smoking pipe, I either concentrate too much on the pipe and then don't comprehend the text or I neglect the pipe and have to work the bugger 20 times because it goes out.

I used to smoke cigars when i went out camping. I like cigarettes here and there, but they're far more dirty, and the politics and nature of the companies behind them are despicable, and turn me off from them. I'd be interested in trying a pipe but all research points me to the fact that all three of these are equally dangerous. I like tobacco, but is there really no safe way of smoking it? I don't like vapor products, and the whole appeal of tobacco is the smoke feel, taste, and smell.

That only plays if you use a reasonably small/light hanger. I have several in the 40-55g range and they are all very comfortable to clench and hike away. Pic related is my vintage Brubu, it weighs 50g and it is the most comfortable pipe to clench I ever tried, probably because it was designed for alcoholic farmers doing physical work and smoke pipe all day long. I smoke this one often whilst walking/hiking, light it, hang it in your mouth, tamp down tobacco every 10 min, lasts around 4 km.

They were made by STG then and now. However, some of the blends are different to the Murray’s produced blends, which were produced from 1980s-2005. And of course, they’re different than the actual Dunhill produced blends pre-1980s. A lot of old timers say that the post-2005 tins taste different, especially blends like Elizabethan and Royal Yacht, but they also say that if you’ve never had pre-2005 Dunhill/Peterson blends, it’s not that big of a deal as the newer blends are still quality tobacco.

Unpopular opinion, but I don’t like big bowls. Since I’ve bought a 320, the latakia blends I smoke in it just aren’t as full flavored as when I smoked them in smaller bowls. I’m getting a wider variety of flavors, but when I smoke a latakia blend, I don’t wanna taste a lot of Virginia, and that’s what’s happening with this big bowl. Just like with big ring gauge cigars, you get a wider flavor, but it’s not as concentrated and powerful. I think my sweet spot is .75-.80. This .90 diameter chamber just ain’t working.

If you have an excessively thin chamber you get problems, it doesn't load nice, it doesn't burn nice, it doesn't smoke good. on the other hand if the chamber is just shallow it works halfway decent. Eskimo shape is is pretty good at that, I got an estate Stanwell 392 and it is fully loaded about 30 minutes. If you need to go even faster then something like pic related is built for the job.

That reassures me when I think about pipe smoking becoming a chemical addiction. It's not just less nicotine compared to cigarettes, it's basically none. (weird Mac Baren Extra Triple Giga Nicotine McVomit blends aside, and no one smokes those who isn't a cigarette smoker anyway). I sometimes smoke a cigar or a hookah, and there's considerable nicotine in that, but not in a single bowl of an average sized pipe filled with average tobacco. I have never craved my pipe, and I only notice the mild relaxing/invigorating effect of the nicotine if I'm paying attention to it.

It's just going to be more user friendly that way. Stays lit longer, you don't have to keep re-lighting it and then walking this frustrating knife's edge between your pipe going out all the time and roasting it so hot it loses all the flavor and you get tongue bite. The rule of thumb is if you use a strong flavored tobacco, especially aromatics, in a pipe, those flavors will ghost in the pipe and tamper with the flavor of a more mild tobacco like a Virginia. So if you're being really particular you smoke like with like--have a pipe for aromatics, a pipe for Virginias and mild tobaccos, a pipe for English etc.
Honestly I don't find it matters that much for everyday smoking. You should have at least one good all-around daily driver pipe that you can smoke anything out of. If you're being a fucking connoisseur and need a completely untainted smoking experience to taste a tobacco get a fresh corncob for 5 bucks.

Pipe arrived (pic related), nice and small. As anons predicted, it was difficult for me to light properly and keep going but once I got the hang of it, I enjoyed a nice 5-10 minutes of puffing. I was smoking some Ashton "Guilty Pleasure" and other than a bit of bite when I forgot it was a tiny pipe and not a cigar, it was pretty nice. Also, Smoke-king, where I got this and the tobacco from, gave me a cheeky little mint chocolate. Very nice.
Anyway anons, any other advice to give? Anything I should keep in mind? I was going to get a nice entry briar, but was wondering if the stem shape matters? I know a shorter stem gives a hotter smoke, but is the actual shape just aesthetic? How about bowl shapes? Cheers.

Herbal smoking blends are one of those things that get talked up a lot by pussies that won't smoke tobacco and high school kids who want to look cool or have a cheap and legal way to get high. In reality their psychoactive properties are way overhyped, they are very, very mild if present at all. I think I have noticed a slight calming effect from damiana and scullcap blend which is my go to for an herbal smoke. I smoke that blend because it has a pleasant flavor, not for any effects. If I want to get high I will smoke weed, not mess around with random herbs.

A churchwarden pipe (that's the term for the long stemmed ones) is a pretty good one to start with due to having a rather cool smoke and it does come with the benefit of being quite aesthetic too so if you don't take up using it it's at least something pretty for the mantlepiece.
Missouri Meerschaum did (do?)a nice line of mini-churchwardens, they're relatively cheap at ~£25-30 so not much of an investment to worry about if you don't like it, though if you want to go with something solid there's Petersons who do a good line of churchwardens at £70-90.
Do some looking about online and don't feel pressured to buy the first thing you see, pipe smoking is all about taking it easy and so should the buying of them be.
One more thing - never buy from China.

For the pipe, you'll need some cheap pipe tools, a clipper lighter, and a pipe. The long stem pipes you mentioned are reading pipes, you hold em in your hand whilst reading a book sitting at home, they are impractical for anything else.
For beginners pipes, try a common shape, bruyere wood, some ok tier beginner pipe will be around €40

But then you have flavors that can be really robust to the point that some people might call them harsh. Kind of like 120 proof bourbon, if that's what you're into it can be a very desirable quality but it can come across as harsh or rugged to newcomers. If you think that a cigar is harsh, as long as it was a good and fresh cigar, this is probably the issue. Just like someone might like a light smooth Irish whiskey but not a rugged Kentucky bourbon, the more robust flavors might just not be your thing. Try a mild burley or Virginia tobacco, or an easy aromatic like Lane 1-Q, if you get harsh flavors out of those you're doing something wrong.
Hookahs are not a fair comparison at all. The flavor is made to be one-dimensional like you said, but also pulling it through the water cools the smoke and changes its character completely. And with a hookah you inhale into the lungs vs. a pipe where you just puff it in your mouth.

Hello people. I've been enjoying smoking a cigar every once in a while, and I would like to try smoking a pipe. You have a rather small cob there and it'll be always hard to stay lit. get a regular size cob or pipe. And stay with ribbon / coarse cuts for starters, they are easier to smoke than flake or plugs.

Other than that I smoke Schürch #128, SOB, #407 and #129 regularly, I smoke the Balkan Mixture from Wellauer, English Mix #7 from Wagner and Peter's standard mild from Roman Peter. I also used to smoke Holker Twist Rope from Synjeco, but it's been some time. All of those are basically unobtanium outside Switzerland and neighbouring countries.

If it’s used as a condiment, it can sweeten and smoothen out a blend. But by itself, even if it’s flavored, it’ll just taste like hot air. Also, I don’t think Virginias are bland at all. They have a lighter flavor than latakia for sure, but they aren’t bland. They are sweet, tangy, bready, toasty, and sometimes earthy or fruity. A quality Virginia blend tastes amazing. Cornell & Diehl Opening Night is a really good straight-Virginia blend that has no toppings and is readily available. Just high quality sweet Virginia leaf. Or, if you are looking for a darker more in your face flavor, a latakia blend will be the way to go. There is a bit of leatheriness in latakia, but not as much as a cigar, and I personally think latakia has more flavor than any kind of cigar tobacco.

I'm trying to get into this shit but all the pipes seem to have gay as plastic mouth pieces. No I won't suck tobacco through plastic. I need wood or clay. I went to a tobacco shop too and they mostly just seemed confused that I didn't want plastic. Plus the plastic just fucking looks stupid

Not many pipes use bakelite anymore, but vulcanite stems have been around since the late 1800s and acrylic stems have been around since the 1930s. There are some artisan pipes that use wood stems, but a lot of the time even those are lined with vulcanite or acrylic on the inside. The reason for that is the wood absorbs a lot of the stuff that goes through it, making it harder to clean and having the potential to clog up the narrow air passage. In other words, your briar pipe that’s supposed to last forever wouldn’t last forever with a wood stem. Clay pipes typically have either no separate stem or a wood stem, so you could go that route, but it won’t last as long as a briar or meerschaum pipe.
