what is the best state for /out/ing and why is it NC?

Finished the northern section of the Art Loeb trail last year. "The Narrows" was fucking terrible. And the view at Cold Mountain was pretty bad at the time of year I went. Oh well. At least some of the sights were amazing along the way. NC is truly beautiful, but part of what I saw was Tennessee too.

You're not lying. I was going to do the Alum Cave & Mount Leconte hike recently and there were cars lined up alllllllll the way down the road. This was in the middle of the workweek in the shoulder season. Said fuck this shit and drove off.

Hope this isn't derailing the thread but I didn't want to make a new one just to plan my own trip. I'm going to visit some online friends in NC soon and would appreciate recommendations on a good hike/camp spot to see along the way (meeting in Raleigh then going to the coast). I'm gonna be on a non-ADV bike though so no gravel roads pls. Might as well ask for WV recs for the return trip too while I'm at it. For WV I was hoping to do some more backpacking but NC would just be an overnight stay in the western half.
